Great video, I’ve never heard that interview before. Between that interview and the new Get Back film, it’s great seeing how even though they were all such forward thinkers, they were also very nostalgic and really lit up when they talked about their pasts. Even though your videos are generally always over 10 minutes it feels like they’re too short because you manage to fit so much information into a very tight and entertaining format. Another superb video Andrew. The Beatles’ Xmas shows are an often overlooked but fascinating insight to times gone by. I’m sure nobody would expect to see the biggest stars of 2021 appear in a quaint Xmas show. Cliff Richard & The Shadows were appearing in their take on the pantomime Aladdin that same Winter. Such shows featuring the leading artists of the day seem anachronistic now but were extremely popular back then. Unfortunately I was too young to see The Beatles live but a family friend travelled up from Bournemouth to see The Beatles ‘64 show. Many years later he told me that unsurprisingly the best part of the show was the Beatles ‘concert’ finale. Apparently they could hardly be heard though above the sound of screaming girls much to his annoyance as he wanted to enjoy listening to them!
I th ought Ringo had his tonsils out earlier in the year, that's when Jimmy Nicol stepped in for part of the tour. I must have gotten my wires crossed somewhere. UPDATE: He was indeed hospitalized with tonsillitis at that time but didn't have them removed until the 2nd of December. So I was half right.

One Thing to mention is that Freddie Garrity, of the Dreamers, stole the Beatles version of "If You Gotta Make of Somebody" from the Beatles own arrangement of the song after he visited the Cavern Club. It's my own theory, but Brian's Suicide stems from the night that he was at a drug store with Wilford Brimble, the guy who played Paul's Grandfather in "A Hard Day's Night" and an MI6 agent (Who's name excapes me, but Maggie Thatcher mentioned his name and all the liberals got angry with her). The last time I have heard about this guy is that he was in the building next door where Madeleine McCann disappeared, in Portugal. There is a book by Lewisohn I believe that chronicles everything the Beatles did every day of their career. I'll have to dig it out and do a video on it, because The Beatles' working schedule was so unbelievable for those first 4 years that I don't understand how they did it. There were days where they would film A Hard Day's Night in the morning, go to the studio for a few hours after that, then travels miles to play a show in the evening. It was just insane. The fact that these Christmas shows went for 3 weeks had to be absolute torture for the boys.
The Hamburg days included gigging several times amounting to 7 hours of playing, and sleeping in pretty squalid conditions. I suspect they thought anything was better than factory jobs or mining. Also, the money was coming in - and records were selling!

Ringo married a bond girl, sean connery covered a beatles song. he probably loved beatles, so isnt his fault. its the makers behind the james bond. i assume its because the james bond frenchises were supposed to be aimed for older guys, and beatles were like a ``stupid`` teenage band

Never been a fan of pantomime, but this line up were good. Would have been nice if The Beatles had done a Christmas album, only did Christmas promos. I remember Freddie Garrity from the group and 'Little Big Time' 70's TV actress that was in this lives near me. Nice video.
one thing the beatles did that surely helped their record sales was that nearly every year, from '63 on, they had new product for the christmas market. i think '66 and '69 were the only years they didn't have a christmas release. actually, the parlophone release of "a collection of beatles oldies" was intended to fill that void in 1966. just a side note - that jimmy savile sure ended up being a real a-hole didn't he? your channel is cool. you're just full of obscure beatle info, aren't you, my friend?

I'm not sure I'd say Magical Mystery Tour was a similar thing to these sketches. It has it's more panto moments, and it is possible that those costumes ended up with a panto company (no one knows what happened to them after the shop they rented them from closed down), but because of all the drugs they were on at time, it's much more twisted and dark. Maybe that's just me saying that as someone who had nightmares for years from that film as a child.

I saw Freddie Garrity locally in Panto in 1980 and also saw The Cilla Black Show at Scarborough in Summer 1975 featuring a number of acts. I only remember seeing Freddie and the Panto Gang lining up in the foyer after the show. Which Panto it was is not remembered.
I was a stagehand on that show. Two shows a night for three weeks, with matinees as well on Weds and Sats. I'd be the very last to defend Saville, but you are absolutely mistaken in saying that no-one liked him on the show. There was no hint of him taking advantage of the thousands of fans. Us stage hands used to go and lift weights with him in his dressing room between shows... and he would compete with big Mal, the Beatles roadie, on who was the strongest...Those were the days, my friend....

Terrific video, I'd read about these shows, but this adds more of a "you are there" context. I sent the link to a friend who was at one of these shows, and he got a great nostalgic kick out of it (he was 12 and his older sister took him along). I've asked if I can share his comments, we shall see... At least we can get an idea of the Beatles doing panto from the Shakespeare sketch they did on Around thr Beatles, I'm sure it's on TH-cam somewhere.

Cliff & The Shadows did 2 Pantos (Cinderella and Aladdin) at the Palladium. I seem to think the Soundtrack albums were only sold at the theatre to the audience.

one thing the beatles did that surely helped their record sales was that nearly every year, from '63 on, they had new product for the christmas market. i think '66 and '69 were the only years they didn't have a christmas release. actually, the parlophone release of "a collection of beatles oldies" was intended to fill that void in 1966.

I'm not sure I'd say Magical Mystery Tour was a similar thing to these sketches. It has it's more panto moments, and it is possible that those costumes ended up with a panto company (no one knows what happened to them after the shop they rented them from closed down), but because of all the drugs they were on at time, it's much more twisted and dark. Maybe that's just me saying that as someone who had nightmares for years from that film as a child.

I am surprised the tickets did not cost way more to get into the Beatles Christmas special, between it being Christmas and how popular they were you would think they would have charged a lot more. The official reason for Jimmy Nicol replacing Ringo for 2 weeks in 1964 was Ringo’s tonsillitis, yet he had them out in December 2:15 and was hospitalised for 10 days (!)… the plot thickens
I saw Freddie Garrity locally in Panto in 1980 and also saw The Cilla Black Show at Scarborough in Summer 1975 featuring a number of acts. I only remember seeing Freddie and the Panto Gang lining up in the foyer after the show. Which Panto it was is not remembered.
I was a stagehand on that show. Two shows a night for three weeks, with matinees as well on Weds and Sats. I'd be the very last to defend Saville, but you are absolutely mistaken in saying that no-one liked him on the show. There was no hint of him taking advantage of the thousands of fans. Us stage hands used to go and lift weights with him in his dressing room between shows... and he would compete with big Mal, the Beatles roadie, on who was the strongest...Those were the days, my friend....

Terrific video, I'd read about these shows, but this adds more of a "you are there" context. I sent the link to a friend who was at one of these shows, and he got a great nostalgic kick out of it (he was 12 and his older sister took him along). I've asked if I can share his comments, we shall see...
At least we can get an idea of the Beatles doing panto from the Shakespeare sketch they did on Around thr Beatles, I'm sure it's on TH-cam somewhere.

Michael Haslam's sister, Annie, reached progressive rock fame as the lead singer of the band Renaissance. Coincidentally, Renaissance was formed by the Yardbirds' Keith Relf and Jim McCarty when they left that band.
She also dated Roy Wood from The Move and ELO for a little while. I think he wrote some music and did the cover art for one of her solo records.
