The word 'Beatlemania' was used by the press for the first time after The Beatles performed on the TV show "Sunday Night At The London Palladium on October 13th 1963. It was the show which introduced them to an audience outside teenage fans and was the pinnacle of the British entertainment world. A few days later week later they recorded their single "I Want To Hold Your Hand" followed by their first overseas tour to Sweden and recorded their single "I Want To Hold Your Hand". In this packed video, we look at all of those events - and more!

Sixty years later they're still making world news headlines! Brilliant video once again Andrew of a truly magical time.
Cheers Steve!
It's so odd to me , that even though I know better, I always expect "I Saw Her Standing There" to begin with the "4" count in. It has been embedded in my brain since I bought "Introducing The Beatles' here in the U.S. back in the 60's. Thank you again for a wonderful video Andrew !!!! Much appreciated as always.
Great stuff, Andrew
3:19 Wow, I did not know the Rutles joke about Barry Wom saying "I'd like to be a hairdresser. Or two. I'd like to be two hairdressers." had some basis in reality.
Upon their arrival from Sweden to Heathrow Airport, another TV impresario would come to find out who the Beatles were. Ed Sullivan used to travel around Europe looking for acts to appear on his Sunday night variety show in the U.S. Departing from Heathrow Airport, Ed noticed a large crowd of teenagers on top of the arrivals building. When Ed asked a stewardess what all the commotion was about, she told him "It's the Beatles". Ed wondered what the Beatles were, so upon arriving back in the U.S. he was able to find out that they were a pop group taking England and parts of Europe by storm. Ed hadn't seen anything like this since Elvis Presley, so he set the wheels in motion to get The Beatles to appear on the Ed Sullivan show. 73 million viewers later, Beatlemania swept across the U.S.
I’ve been a Beatles fan all my life but always learn something new from your videos. Great stuff!
"I Saw Her Standing There" from the Drop In show is definitely one of their best-ever live performances and I cherish every second of it. Ringo is absolutely on fire and I just the love the looks the other 3 are giving each other throughout the song, as to say "Wow, can you believe what that guy is doing on the drums???" It's damn-near the happiest I've ever seen them on a stage, especially George. That song was an obvious choice for the Anthology and I was glad to see it in there.
The performance on the Swedish show the Drop was my favorite show of 1963. Their live performance was amazing! My favorite parts were Twist and Shout and Long Tall Sally. At the end of the show, the Beatles, the hosts, and the audience started clapping in unison. The Royal Performance was nice too.
It’s definitely a highlight of the documentary
This channel provides fascinating insights into the Beatles that go beyond their high-profile career and 1970 breakup. As a 21-year-old fan, I've discovered obscure compilation projects through the channel that have expanded my knowledge of the band's works beyond just their original albums and the compilations available in Spotify. I appreciate learning about little-known areas of Beatles history. Nice work Andrew.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
I can't be the only one that heard Paul's radio voice saying "Now she's hit the big time!" as soon as I saw the title
A splendid episode Andrew! Glad you popped in a few seconds of live performances! Still feels like yesterday (no pun intended) to me. I am amazed, as always, at how the audio was so well recorded in those early days.
Love the newspaper clips too. It’s fun to see how the press reacted at such new happenings in their world.
Thanks again as always. Brilliant!
The Drop In Performance is among the finest live performances, unfortunately the cameramen did not catch John’s guitar solo on Long Tall Sally, and George’s solo was omitted as though the Beatles were a single mind and knew to play a shorter version. The show had John and Paul clowning around in an intimate setting with well behaved And appreciative audience and host. The Beatles in charismatic top form just as Beatlemania was about to explode upon the England
another week, another excellent video! you're a must-watch for Beatles fans! hope you enjoyed Now and Then!
Cilla’s quote echoes a line from “Help!”, “…and just the same as they was before they was…”
Always look forward to your videos Sunday morning in the western world, Andrew…
I,used,to,play,the, Beatles albums all,the,time,when,I,was,15,years,old,I'm,now,69,years,old
Wow Beatlemania before it hit the US. Reminds me of other bands that were popular with the teenybopoers abroad before they hit the USA. Do you know when the US teen magazines started to give them coverage? Great and informative video again Handsome.
And five of the seven songs they played at the Karlaplan studio are on Anthology 1
Another great video, Andrew. I liked the Beatles' music back in '63, but was really embarrassed by the antics of the fans at the airport as reported in the national press. I was an eleven year old Grammar School boy, after all! They were great times, every other week a new artist or group seemed to come along. 🙂
People Always Ask Me Why I Know So Much About The Beatles, Should I Tell Them I Get It From Your Channel - Anyway An Another Fine Production Andrew......
Funny thing, everyone was talking about the new Rolling Stones album.....until the Beatles put out a new single. We just turned the clocks back in America, how far back did turn them to??
The Royal Variety Show performance, I've actually seen, isn't it up here on TH-cam?
'Anne Collingham' was a pseudonym/pen name for all the various girls that worked at the Beatles fan club. As you can imagine they were a bit busy for just one person so it was decided they would all just be Anne Collingham!
Wait--at 21:52, the guy is playing a Gallotone Champion, which was John's first guitar!
Brian Epstein had some strange Ideas didn’t he ? Weird collars, strange suits, bowing In unison.
That show recorded for Swedish radio was indeed amazing. I remember the being startled the first time I heard it. I had not realized that they could play a live show that was that good! Maybe it was the partly due to the fact that, as stated here, the crowd was quieter than normal. Because of the screaming girls and lack of adequate on-stage monitors, I think they often were unable to hear each other playing.
How come you are allowed to play actual music in this video? Do live recordings not count towards copyright match?
Another brilliant Video Andrew, guess you making good use of the scrap books bought some time ago and am still learning stuff after all these years
Barry Wom : "I'd like to be a hairdresser. Or two. I'd like to be two hairdressers"
Thank you for NOT posting more about “Now And Then”
Enough said.
I was expecting a clip regarding the "Now & Then" release, so this one was a surprise. Fantastic as usual. Thank you Andrew. You even managed to get some Beatles audio in there! How'd you manage that? Best to you brother!
Do you have any copy’s of now and then. I got a marble vinyl and it has label splits near the spindle hole. Like it had been played before but it was new
It is interesting to see that the Swedish concert arrangers weren't too sure whether the Beatles would attract a big audience in the beginning of the tour and as you noted, even printed other bands and artists they were touring with using bigger font. At their Eskilstuna concert they toured together with the Swedish pop group Trio me Bumba, who then were very popular in Sweden and there has been stories about Beatles being the supporting act to Trio me Bumba, but that wasn't true - it was rather the opposite. The group Trio me Bumba still exists today and the leader Jan-Erik "Bumba" Lindqvist seems still today very happy to talk about touring with the Beatles, and who wouldn't want to listen to such stories and memories?
The reason for this is that this is so early on in their career that most people didn't know who they were.
They didn't get that wider recognition here in Scandinavia until they released "She Loves You" as a single.
That was the very first song that I heard of The Beatles here in Norway.
In fact the other Swedish artists such as singer Lill Babs that can be seen to the left on one of the photos taken from the TV show "Drop In" later said that she had no idea who they were - and what lay ahead of them.
The small crowd of the youngsters that are sitting 2 meters away from them had no idea of how they were supposed to behave in front of The Beatles.
So, here you can see the slow reaction of young people being taken by suprise for the very first time.
The presenter of the show, Clas Burling, had been in England and was one of the very first outside Britain
to vitnes their tremendous success there.
He made intervjues with them - and was instrumental in bringing them over to Sweden for their very first trip abroad - except for their play jobs in Hamburg, Germany of coarse.
This trip to Sweden was the very first beginning of their promotion of the single "She Loves You" -
and their album "Please Please Me" outside Britain.
Their short performance on "Drop In" can be found here on TH-cam -
but their opening song "She Loves You" has sadly been muted - but you can see them perform.
Bruce Forsyth was underappreciated I think. The man was hugely talented and fantastic with people.
Ironically, his only real equal in terms of being a game show host, Bob Monkhouse, was one of the few people in the UK to have a video recorder and was an obsessive recorder of television shows, particularly ones that featured comedy, and a lot of old footage we see today, are from his archive, so it is possible that he captured some of those lost Beatles television appearances.
I had never realised that the Rutles hairdresser bit was so close to reality
Excellent video! Although I was expecting something about the "new" single, it's always good to learn more about their valuable history.
I was dreading another Now and Then video they are everywhere I can't stand them...
The Beatles were on the Jack Parr show before Ed Sullivan.
Great video. Many thanks. Look forward to the next!
This is such a wonderful video. I had the pleasure of being inside the theater at Grona Lund where Drop In was shot (they do catering for musicians and crew playing the main stage there), and I couldn’t believe how TINY it is! It was otherworldly to have been inside the studio where my favorite Beatles performance was shot
Paul was, always my favorite Beatle
"Quick question.....are you actually a robot?"
5:57 I'm with John, those collarless suits always looked silly!
Sixty years later and reading about what they eat on here and elsewhere it shows how much they changed their dietary habits over the years to now.
Excellent videos very informative.
I studied at the secondary school they played their first Sweden gig at (and got to perform on that very stage a number of times!) and it had this lovely tapestry up in the main hall behind a small stage inspired by the band. Very Sgt Peppers-Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds vibes. On this smaller stage we had our first class concert where I played bass on Gently Weeps, good times!
Wow! Good times indeed! Thanks for posting.
So happy these are back, love these month in the life deep dives 🔥🔥
i thought Paul McCartney got a new bass cos his first one had been stolen? The two models have different spacing of the pickups.
It was stolen during the Get Back sessions in 1969.
Thank you Andrew! The storytelling in your videos is brilliant! 23 minutes went by in a blink! Love your work!!!
Thank you so much!
Manythnx Parlogram 🤘
Great recap of the Sweden tour, wish I had been there at the time.. I wonder how many signed Beatles singles still are in attics in Borås after the signing session there..
Good question, Bernhard!
I *LOVE* this channel!
Thank you!
Very informative and well done! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Congratulations, your channel are fabulous.
Thank you so much, Nils!
Great video! Klas Burling - Swedish Radio journalist and local "pop oracle" - was indeed a national treasure if just only for his part in getting to know the Beatles, recommending them to the right people to organize the tour in Sweden and pushing for the Swedish Radio and Drop-In performances to be made. Coaxing two more numbers was clearly NOT planned and the show's actual hosts were visibly miffed!
Just a minor nitpick: the 4-track they used for IWTHYH wasn't new - there were two giant Telefunken machines installed in separate machine rooms the late 50's. The new machines, Studer J37's, would arrive in the control rooms in time for the Help! sessions.
Great stuff, Andrew. Thanks for everything you do....long live The Beatles
Wow! I never knew that they switched to the black suits for the Palladium performance... I always thought that they stuck to the grey and had the black suits by the '64 show
The advent of the word "Beatlemania" is claimed by a number of people including a guy called Andi Lothian who was an associate of the Scottish promoter Albert Bonici.
Bonici had booked them through Brian Epstein in October 1962 for a tour in Scotland in January 1963, and had the option / clause of all future tours in Scotland. And he did til mid 1964.
The next Scottish gigs he promoted were in October 1963, and it was there that Lothian claims he coined the term chatting to a reporter. However there doesn't appear to be any use of it from reports of the gig and instead it was a headline in Daily Mirror by Don Short which appears to be the real story.
Add to that Lothian has a history for building his role claiming to be the man who took The Beatles to Scotland. When in reality he was a young sideman to Bonici during those early days working for him.
Lothian did become a promoter in his own right after working with Bonici.
I appreciate that you didn't do YET ANOTHER "now and then" unboxing and review...so refreshing! Real Beatles information, count me in!
Your research is getting ridiculously good ❤ Although I was disappointed for you not wearing a 60-year-old Beatles polo sweater!
Andrew, fantastic information as always. I enjoy binging your content. You are a true historian. Thank you.
Great video once again, nice to see a beatle related video that isn’t a reaction to “Now and then” still missing that 1963 box set that should have been!
Yes, I’m amazed there hasn’t been a 1963 box set whilst two of the Beatles are still here. A missed opportunity.
What a exciting video! I wish I could be there in Liverpool in 1963!!
Thank you Andrew, another really interesting and informative story. Very topical just now (and then)
Brilliant show - loved the music and the video clips- keep up the fantastic theme, perhaps 1964 next!
The most famous and influential musician at the time in Australia, Graeme Bell, KNEW George Martin. He and his band (my granduncle was their clarinet player) had recorded at EMI Studios in 1951 - and that session was produced by George Martin. It wouldn't have taken much to have the proper cover used (I have a copy of the inferior Australian version) had GB and GM known how ****** John was about the whole thing.
TRES Cool
They hadn't even recorded Long Tall Sally yet, but this short blast of it (barely over a minute long) is as good as it gets!
AWESOME
After 60 years, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr still performing live with lots of energy and tenacity!
This is a very good and interesting video. I especially liked the way it synchs up the home movie footage with the audio tape at the concert.
Imagine the thoughts of Pete Best as all this went on ...
'If only I had learnt to play the drums properly?'
I'm not sure if that would be enough. Ringo's personality was also a key factor to their chemistry.
You're totally right. Pete Best always reminds me of a burger seller on one of those roadside mobile cafes for some reason. Ringo was perfect for The Beatles.@@guilhermeguedes7246
Where’s the video on the new song?!
Coming soon!
It’s so amazing to see an aspect of the Beatles fame before they came to the United States. It’s unfortunate that the Sunday Night at the Palladium footage is gone but we are lucky to have the some of the audio which is great. Thanks again Andrew!
The Beatles' performance on Drop-In is considered almost as legendary in Sweden as their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. At the time Swedish television only had one channel and according to reports I've read about 3-4 million people tuned in that night to watch their performance. That correlates to around half of Sweden's population in 1963
I always enjoy your informative Beatles episodes and look forward to them every Sunday.
highest quality Beatle content on TH-cam
¡Increíble y muy completa información, gracias Andrew!
I love these “time capsule” segments. It gives baby boomers nostalgia and the rest of us an idea of what went on “all those years ago” to quote a George lyric.
Andrew, I’m surprised by how many things I didn’t know! Excellent video. BTW, your English is so clear and understandable.
Thank you, Riccardo. Glad you enjoyed it!
"...and after lunch, they went to Sweden"... haha.
#mrchristophertv
Nice work Andrew!
Cheers Paul!
Is there any source about when Jonh learnt to play piano?
Nice job, Andrew. Always good. And now we turn the clock 60 years later from Oct '63 and here we go again! Beatlemania: Alive and well.
Glad you enjoyed it, Anthony!
lovely stuff Andrew and full of your usual detail, keep it coming!
I was only listening to the Anthology 1 (vinyl of course) the other night and was amazed at the Beatles performance for the Swedish radio broadcast, so tight and a perfect recreation of the records. The Royal Command Performance on 3rd November is a standout as well. The Anthology series is definitely worth revisiting.
Thanks Peter. Will do!
THHHEEE best unofficial on authority Beatles YT channel.
Thanks!
Isn't it amazing that the Beatles were so good that 60 years on your videos are getting thousands of views. I worked with a man in 1986 who worked as a doorman at de montfort hall in Leicester in the 60's who was going to sell me all the Beatles autographs for £20 on Friday and I got the sack on the Wednesday. I missed out.😩
Bad luck, Allan! Thanks for watching.
If you haven't seen the video about George's visit to the US, you MUST!!
Thank you. Here's the link to those who haven't: th-cam.com/video/IPJiZZE9aDI/w-d-xo.html
Wonderful video, Andrew! Even after 60 years it's still incredible to see what they achieved in just a year and how Beatlemania came about, which you captured brilliantly here. Really looking forward to the videos for November and December 1963!
Cheers Nick!
Loved this video. Keep up the excellent storytelling. I also loved the Swedish radio show-what a great performance.
Glad you enjoyed it, David!
Another fantastic episode Andrew - just think, only another 6 years to go, and then you can take a break from these! Much appreciated, Terry, Australia.
Cheers Terry!
Thank you Andrew for another informative video! The stratosphere of Beatlemania in the UK! Cheers to all the detail and work you put into the videos! I look forward to them every week!
Glad you enjoyed them!
Thank you Andrew for another excellent and informative video about my favourite group. How lucky are we to have been blessed with them in our lifetime.
Thank you, Robert. Glad you enjoyed it!
I have been to Sweden and actually attended a concert at Gröna Lund It is a venue like no other. It is basically a fun fair with an auditorium smack in the middle. You literally watch a band while people are whizzing around on rides around you!! You buy a ticket for the park which has the gig ticket thrown in. You can also buy a season ticket for the park which gets you into concerts for the whole summer season. The most amazing place to watch a live gig. Amazing people, the Swedish. Another top quality video Andrew. I am now waiting for one where you air your views of Now and Then please..............
Thanks for sharing your experience. N&T video coming soon!
@@Parlogram Excellent
The venue where Drop-In was shot was “Narrenteatern”, not the open-air stage - which itself has hosted plenty of other legendary concerts.
@@bjornerikroth Ah yes. Thanks for clarifying. I did not mean to mislead anyone. Just merely point out what an amazing place Gröna Lund is to attend a concert. Yes, I saw Whitesnake there a couple of years ago, and my partner saw Lionel Ricthie!! The list of artists lined up included Iggy Pop. Would have loved to have seen him play the park!
I was 9 years old when my mother bought me "Twist And Shout", my first Beatles record. Now, sixty years later, I still love the Fab Four as much as ever! Thanks for the great videos, Andrew!
Great memories, Tom!
To be honest, i wish id live the beatlemania 😔
Can you please make all of these 60th anniversary vids in a playlist, love your work
They are included in this playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLZczbX_Vy3bA4UjaHlJ5UC1_y4ZqJ96_a.html
These scrapbook episodes are just plain good. They really are. It's a proper chronicle.
Glad you like them!
Love these videos. Thanks for all the research and time put into them.
Thank you, much appreciated!
Awesome episode as usual, Andrew!!! - Roger
Thanks Roger!
Do a video on the likelihood of the Anthology videos getting any deluxe HD reissue love in 2025 (30th anniversary), the amount of AI that might be used, and what music audio versions they might substitute for the original (e.g. Giles mixes, mono, etc).
Thanks for the suggestion!
Excellent as per usual Andrew but that Carlisle photo is actually of a queue waiting for Beatles tickets outside City Hall in Newcastle.
I knew it wouldn't fool you, Scott! ;)
Great video Andrew - highlighting the months before Beatlemania hit America was very cool to watch - Those Swedish performances were bootlegged here as "Drop In - The Swedish Tour" with Ringo Starr turning in the most impressive rock drumming - I'm so sure he was inspired by those hot Swedish teenage girls! I recently watched a colourized performance from that show and it looked incredible! Love how technology is being served well with The Beatles Archive!
Glad you enjoyed it, Louis!
The pronounciation of Gröna Lund was perfectly fine! Thanks for yet another fantastic video. My dad attended one of the 1964 shows, you could neither hear or see anything is his description of the experience.
Thank you for watching and for sharing your Dad's experience.
