Thank you for the honest and extensive review. I own the old one, a.great improvement would have been to add an effect loop and to keep a compact size rather than adding all those effecta.

I have the old mini too. It's a great amp for practising in hotel rooms while travelling. It's easy to pack and reasonably easy to get a usable tone. A speaker out would be great addition for playing around at home but, in all honesty I'd probably never use it at home. I have much better amps for home use.

Thanks for another honest review! I completely agree with your opinions on this. I briefly owned one and returned it. I own and love the original Katana Mini and Boss Dual Cube LX, and think they both sound better than this amp. I was excited to get it due to the larger speaker and analogue circuitry but it just didn't deliver, unfortunately. A rare fail from Boss in my opinion (coming from a Boss fan!).

Respect to PMTV but that's not a review channel, it's a sales/demo channel, which is fine too. I go there to hear a good player demo things, that's it.
And much love to this channel as well, but I knew that an out of the box only demo of a Katana 50 was not going to provide the best idea of what it can do, so I added other more in depth reviews that went into BTS and the whole ecosystem. These amps are popular for a reason, and I wanted to know why.

There's one thing that Elmo and other reviewers rarely mention. Sometimes these amps break. Can you get them fixed? Not easily. They become more electronic junk. They build them so that it often isn't cost effective to have them repaired. Sure a new amp has some kind of warranty, but after that when it breaks too bad for you. I guess the more well known brands may hold up better, but no guarantee of longevity. Thanks Elmo.

You're the last honest man standing on Review Tube. I didn't like the way this sounded on other reviews because it seemed that Roland/Boss decided to stop being innovative, like they were with COSM, and use the kind of cheap circuitry you find on any run of the mill mini amp.

I have similar thoughts on Boss/Roland. Seems like they're just putting out 'okay' stuff so they have something new to sell in 18 months with a slight tweak/difference that they can market as an improvement. Basically, why make a great amp/practice amp when you want sell the same customer another one later. I bought a Katana GO and couldn't believe it was made by the same people that made the COSM stuff. About as exciting as wet socks.

They missed the opportunity to make it a little amp head with an internal speaker. In the prevois Katana mini you could do a 5$ mod to have speaker out and could connect it to an external speaker. Think about it, battery powered amp head. I used it with a 8'' 8 ohm speaker and it sounded great. They could do it in this amp without a problem but they won't because they would rather sell you a roland cube street for 600$

I thought it was weird that Boss did the Katana Mini X when the Boss Dual Cube LX is in the same price range - especially here in the UK where the Dual Cube has way more features for the money (more amp sounds, looper, footswitch, etc.).

The problem with these little amps is that they just don't have the grunt and feeling you get from a bigger amp. They're OK if you live in an apartment but if you can afford a bigger amp and have the space to use it, get a bigger amp.
I've got a Spark 2 which I bought as an amp to take around the house so I didn't have to always play guitar in my studio, but now I just find I never use it as I don't like the sound and as a result, I'm always in my studio.

This amp should have the app control but BOSS got greedy and have been limiting their hardware on purpose, they released the Katana GO which I have and its awesome but BOSS realized that would compete with this amp and decided to pull it off the market giving the excuse of parts shortage, I've been looking for a decent portable speaker for my Katana GO and can't decide as most portable amps incorporate FXs or other stuff I don't need, I just want the best sounding CLEAN portable amp so I can use it with my Katana Go or other pedals I already have

I had considered this as a battery practice amp. It looks cool with the controls on the front but it seemed rather limited. More features could have been added like modeling software. I also looked at others like the Joyo DC-15S (not a modeling amp) and the NUX Mighty 8BT MKII (AA batteries, yuk) so settled on the Positive Grid Spark MINI which has been fantastic with realistic amp and effects modeling.

On paper, I don't think the concept of the amp is pointless.
Taking the Katana mini or Blackstar Fly concept, and making a little bigger speaker, but still small and portable, and adding some basic effects could be a selling point. Not having to deal with apps like the spark go and Nux stuff is a selling point for some people, even if it doesn't pack as much a punch.
In terms of execution, I can't really comment as I haven't used it, but on paper I don't think the concept is pointless.

Oh man I was going to get the old version but I was kinda broke and also still needing expendable batteries and the PSU not being included kinda pissed me off, So I didn't get since rumour was they would make an updated version with rechargable battery, which some 35 Eur. amps have. So I was pretty excited for this. I want to start teaching and I wanted a good sounding small amp that can be powered off grid, perfect to chuck in the gig bag and some decent high gain tones so no need to bring a pedal either. But this is really weird. If I remember the mini was 100 cal it 130 with a set of batteries and a PSU or a set of rechargable AA batteries. Now it's 170 and sounds worse and has a bunch of useless effects. The original was a great concept a few great sounds instead of a thousand aweful ones. Now it seems they've gone that route which is a shame and if I want that, there are many rechargable amps in the 30-80 bucks range so I may as well get that and just bring a pedal for a good OD sound, which still easily fits a gigbag. Boss was on such a streak, I'm not a big fan of Katanas but I was very happy they existed and I can totally see why people oved and i had become Katana-curious since the mini just seemed fantastic. I already have an Origin 20C which is amazing an relatively portable and loud AF so I wasnt interested in the regular Katanas. BTW I know you didnt enjoy the Origin line very much but I absolutely adore it, I think something many miss is that the FX loop is between the V2 and V3 Pre-Amp tube. Si if you don't have the FX jumped and engaged your bypassing a big part of the preamp and it sounds horrible. With it engaged and a Rat up front I can get almost perfect YJM tones, just fantastic...and make sure to have bass on 0 and treble and mids maxed. People who don't know that end up hating it when its one of the best things Marshall has made in years, especially for someone like me, where a real Plexi or 1987x is way too loud, heavy, expensive and requires costly extras like load boxes, this is the Origin is just perfect. You just have to see it as its own amp, especially regarding EQ. It's a bit of a silly design with the FX loop being tube buffered by the pre amp but ok... once you do that it's incredibly good sounding.

I think people are being too harsh on this amp. They seem to miss the point. This is not for guitarists who have played for decades. This is not studio quality. This is a good little practice amp for a beginner. The problem with Spark mini or Spark Go is the app. This amp is simple. No computer or smartphone needed. Much better amp then what comes in a starter pack. A learning beginner does not need a Katana 100 watt amp or a DAW or a complicated app. This is a simple practice amp.

I completely agree. I am normally a BIG boss fan, but this amp was quite underwhelming for me.
It sounds like it was designed by a corporate CEO, and not a musician.
I gave it a day of my life and returned it.
FWIW, I felt the same way about the Dual Cube LX. But I kept hacking awqy at it until the return period was up, so had to sell it at a loss..

The old Mini guitar amp, often overlooked and unassuming, possessed a certain raw charm. It was a diamond in the rough, a little box that, despite its limitations, could produce a surprisingly pleasing tone. It wasn't perfect, but it had a character, a grit that resonated with a certain type of player. In stark contrast, the newer Mini X guitar amp feels like a step backward, a polished turd attempting to masquerade as an upgrade. For the price point, it's hard to justify the Mini X when the market, particularly the used market, is overflowing with genuinely better options. You can find vintage practice amps with more character or newer models with superior sonic capabilities, all for the same or even less money.

I dont understand why they push these FX on the amps .. Just Reverb is enough on a amp ..
Boss should skip FX and give poeple the WAZA speaker in the katana as standard
The old stomboxes are still better and more handy in use then those multipedals .. Multipedals is an ingredient to F# it up and make mistake's .

Agree, it makes no sense. It's basically a Katana Mini with more FX and front facing control, which on a small practice amp is more cumbersome. I do prefer front facing controls n a bigger amp. But on a tiny carry along practice amp where you will likely always look down on it, no. But it is FAR less flexible than the Spark Mini, which also sounds much better and in the US is only $80 more (when not on sale). Used you can get the Spark mini less than this Katana.

I preordered the Katana Air when it first came out and dented, smashed, scratched, grill reglued on lol it just keeps coming back for more - why would I need *another* small *katana* amp, especially one that doesn't come with access to Boss Tone Studio? I can look past the front panel missing features as long as I can create patches with the application and save them in presets - Mini X doesn't do [insert poop word] literally pointless product for any of my use cases. It's rare Boss does this (I thought the WAZA headphones were pretty great even if lacking line out/speaker out for like PC type speakers and a little overpriced - but I get tired of wearing headphones continuously after a couple hours) but if they think they can sell it or there's a market gap they can stuff into, they'll make it.
And that's okay but you know, lol

You missed the point. If you have a large amp with lots of pedals, it’s nice to literally plug in and just play and get some pretty good tones. It sits on my desk and I use it daily. PS: I have a MicroCube and AB’d it last week - it sounds terrible comparatively so I have to respectfully disagree.

    • @Smart-Alex
      @Smart-Alex 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@MrPolevaulter But is your primary basis for the conclusion is that something else is cheaper available? This is about the same cost as a Boss or MXR pedal, no? It has Bluetooth (I stream music and tracks to it), has a tuner even if it's so-so, some effects (some are so crap I know) but nice delay and verb in a pinch, and front-facing controls like my Gen 3 Artist. This isn't meant to be a 20watt mini practice tube amp replacement, nor a Spark amp with all the AI bells and whistles and app (I hated their app), NOR an ultra-subcompact either where sound is garbage. My two cents - take it or leave it. Happy new year.

Not a fan of this "upgrade" from the demo. But then Mini-X has no built in Bluetooth, hence no Tone Studio app capability. Even the defunct Katana GO has built in bluetooth and the app. And I guess BOSS were too embarrassed to throw in the BT adaptor port on the back cause buying the adaptor would double the price of the Mini-X. The Mini-X could have been a great option for those who didn't get a GO before it was killed off. The GO, the Mini-X and the dumbass BT adaptor ports on all Gen 3 amps instead of built-in BT were all BOSS marketing dept choices versus BOSS actually giving a crap about their customers.
