I can't help but think that this was very "action movie way" of letting go of his vengeance. Dropping wounded Fitzgerald into arms of natives like that. From what I heard Hugh Glass never got his revenge because Fitzgerald joined military and was under their protection. Now that would be very unsatisfying for a viewer, but wouldn't that be closer to letting go of that toussaint mentality of entitled conqueror? Food for thought.

Watching this helped me decide to apply for a job helping protect the environment. I was on the fence about taking a position in environmental organizing, but it's what I can do right now. Please do the great gatsby! Not only the visuals are magical, but it touches deep existential themes of freedom, will, transformation, love and suffering.
Based on your interpretation, I think this story is also about overcoming grief. Glass goes through all the stages of it literally and physically, and finally accepts himself, his fate, and the loss of his family in the end. I like that the director took this true story and made it a statement about the hell you go through when you're trying to put your life back together after it's been destroyed.

The historical American ''Purgatory'' is; was a truly terrifiying place to exist; apart from the endless skirmishes of mexicans/spanish; french; english; usa' and the hundreds of Native tribes; to the several hostile conditions such as the diseases; the wild animals; and even the terrifying legends such as skinwalkers/yenaldooshi and wendigo
It’s like ever since the first Europeans came over, it just brought out the grim darkness in both sides( both European action and Native actions). NA be HELLA cursed

@Nick Smith I was about to point that out. It's not like human nature isn't human nature after all... Also, I don't condone all the pain and destruction that the European brought (as I'm sure you don't yourself), but to think that the natives weren't flawed in their own sense, and that Europeans were who brought brutality in a land that knew nothing but peace, flowers and rainbows... it's just plain stupid.

I got stoned for the first time in years and watched this last night. Idk why, but the weed made me sympathize with Glass and his family so much more. I was in tears at several points in the film, from the tragic story and the raw beauty of the cinematography.
Our time here was never about survival of the body, it was always about the survival of our souls. We are spirits having a human experience, but not all of us will remain in tact at the end of it. This perspective was beautifully told. ❤
I was expecting to learn about a moive, instead I was taken on a journey that I'm really happy that I went on.

This is beyond amazing; a True art of describing and depicting a spectacular movie; and a truly oscar worthy Actor
The energy of animals is a big part of this film, I'm glad you touched on it. Along with the elements of clashing civilizations.
The book, “Lord Grizzly” by Frederick Manfred, written in the 1950’s, is a retelling of Glass’ legend, where the spiritual aspect of the narrative is heightened further, complete with surrealistic visions and a change that allows Glass to ultimately forgive the two who left him behind. It’s inspired reading.
Can anyone please explain why tears were shed while i was watching this? It was definitely out of joy, your words coupled with the scenery and the music made me totally entranced by the beauty of it all and for the briefest of moments, my soul was elevated to the great beyond. Thank you.

Although I love the movie, I changed my perception of it when I realized on a personal level that the main hero was just a young boy who ran away from misunderstanding and disconnect with his parents, and very foolishly died. It's a sad story.

I love this movie with all my soul and now somehow I love it even more thanks to this video. I'm in love with its cinematography, and I am from Argentina so I connect with how it portrays the Americas' history about Colonialism and the exploitation of its native people, land and animals by the Europeans. But now I feel like I understand more deeply why I love it so much. I also deeply connect with the way it portrays the ways of mother nature, its fierce and dangerous beauty, while stating that our spirituality is (or should be) deeply connected with that nature.
It reminds me of a quote by Hubert Reeves:
"Man is the most insane species. He worhips an invisible God and destroys a visible Nature.
Unaware that this Nature he's destroying is this God he's worshipping."

I have lost my father a month ago, right on the day of my birthday. I lost my grandmother 2 days ago , and now I will probably lose my other grandmother. But for some reason, your calming, wise voice makes me forget about everything and just enjoy the beauty of the world.
I particularly see nature as an omnipresent character of the movie, being ominous and imposing, but your interpretation is fascinating and totally valid. I guess great movies resonate in many ways in people's minds. Anyways, amazing video, well done man.
I watched the film a long time ago, but distinctly remember he is buried, and after rain, he climbs out as if he is a sapling sprouting from the earth. I think this connected to themes earlier in the film too.

When I saw The Revenant, I was struck with how European civilization was destroying the Native cultures in their path.
- The message of the film in some ways reminded me of Apolcalypse Now.
- The poetry of the film reminded me of Terrence Malick’s work such as The Thin Red Line.

Well done friend. When I first saw this film I was in awe by its artistic storytelling and felt that there was some underlying plot but couldn’t really put my finger on it. After watching your interpretation I felt as though my eyes were opened to understanding what lies under the surface. It is a metaphor and I believe that’s why the director won the Oscar for beautifully conveying a story that touched my heart. Keep up the good work!

Once again, amazing and beautiful. Ever since your video on Hostiles and Wind River, I have been obsessed with D.H. Lawrence and re-evaluating our past, where we are going, and our souls/selves. I saw connections with this story and video as well. I appreciate the finer points I didn't see upon first viewing, such as the characters taking on the traits of the animals. There is an imbalance in our lives, a disconnect from the natural world and a tendency to try and dominate it. This leads to pain and all sorts of issues. As D.H. Lawrence said, we can never go back to our ancient ancestors, we have changed too much, but we can get closer to that life and run parallel to it. I think this imbalance is one of the reasons we have so much pain and mental health issues in the world today. It's a deep issue that takes more explaining than a youtube comment but your videos are amazing and do justice to these themes and conversations. Thank you!

The world of ancient healing with myth and story telling comes to life when you bring your depth of observation into these movies. mythology, psychology, philosophy, poetry, and the story telling all combined together with a narrative voice sailing our souls across the realms that only you know. when i listen to your videos i am hypnotized to a place that i have no words for. Profound meaning and depth. If I could borrow that insight for a minute then I would see through every aspect of life, maybe the sorrows would turn into a meaningful journey, and I could feel there is meaning and depth here, and we are characters playing our roles in this theater of life that seems so treacherous at times. All this is just trying to say thank you, maybe it is just saying I am glad someone can see. Someone can see beyond what we see and say what we don't. Thank you for enriching our lives in this way deepening our perception. And please don't ever stop these videos. They are like opening windows into enchanted gardens in a world that has gone deaf with so much noise.

Having some time to reflect on this simple definition of the films metaphor. Whether that metaphor is intended or not it is quite a beautiful and apt one. I definitely recommend watching the film with the concept in mind.
