    I found this video while looking for help with chatter on my wood lathe. Trying to figure out how some of these principles might be useful in my quest. My first thought was head-stock bearings being loose. They are not a tapered bearing so I cannot preload them. Not sure how much play is acceptable. Also thought the problem was just due to whip on long spindle turning but I can get severe chatter when turning larger diameters that one would think are relatively immune to flex. Still a mystery I need to solve as it is really holding me back.

    If you get it on a lathe try turning away from the Chuck. I have a video on it.

    Thank you for this. I don't do CNC but I needed info on what causes chatter in my shop. I'm a hobbyist. My day job is as a teacher; specifically, a graphic design, photography, and video teacher.
    Your graphics are great and you've got a good setting but your audio somewhat spoils it. You need either to be wired or use a shotgun mic on your camera. You're in the 'hollow' zone and your audio suffers as a result. To my ear, it tarnishes an otherwise excellent video. Both of the solutions I offer are cheap these days. Make your audio match your video.

    Great vid! Would you have any idea why on my CNC lathe I get chatter when facing? My part is not sticking out more than 1x D....I can't get faster than 2000 rpm on this lathe. Seems to happen alot when facing. The machine is about 7 years old. We mostly do Stainless.

    Soo... bore bar out 7inches. Bar it 1.25 dia. End dia is 3.48.
    Recommendation for the insert im using is 520sf. At .010 ipr. Going 7in deep.
    3.82 x 520=1986 ÷3.48= 570 sfm. ÷ by 7inch = 81 sfm but I still get harmonic and chatter. Do I stick with 520sfm and maybe go faster rpm?
    Fast rpm turn metal hot and easy to cut away?
