Nice gun on it. No doubt. Even has a great firing arc. Set properly in the right terrain in an ambush it would be a nightmare for a bit. Outside that it would be tricky to use.
I was fortunate enough to have seen this at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds before that collection was broken up and hidden away from the unwashed public. If necessity is the mother of invention, this Frankenstein's monster was her red-headed stepchild.

Like the Nashorn, Marder, Archer and Hellcat proved these "glass canons" can work if deployed properly, but this italian solution to the anti-tank problem with the rather low speed (for the tonnage) and even lower ammo capacity are impractical to say the least.

@@lordMartiya Yes and no, Mussolini surrounded himself with yes man and corruption. Fascism being a half measure between capitalism and communism meant that the industrial leaders were never scared of him and had little or no competition outside the borders. Considering the limited resources at the time, and limitations of current Italian arms industry, this TD was a pretty decent effort. Properly employed this gun would have been formidable. It could have been effective right up until the end of the war in 1945. From it's first introduction through to Italian armistice in 1941 to 1943, there weren't any tanks that could have shrugged off direct hits from the 90mm. If Italy could have built a proper tank or enclosed semovente with that gun, it would really have been a problem for opposition armor.
It's fairly easy, general Badoglio said in a document "we will examine the German tanks after the war" and Italian machining and production couldn't keep up also because panzer and stugs were welded something that in Italy was very rare
@@enricob15actually it's was because there was no need the Italians already had the semoventes and for the tanks the Italian decided to use tank like the p40 Wich when was being build it was similar in armor and gun to a panzer ,they also got the Panthers blueprints however they were never accept in the service and instead the p43 was meant to go in production (100 were meant to be built however none was built , there was also a better version that it could had been accepted into service the p43 bis 80-100 mm of sloped armour in the front 50sides and a 90mm a lighter version of the gun the the semovente in this video is using)
Tell me the Italians had better stuff than the Germans, without telling me the Italians had better stuff, just not enough of it. We are fortunate the Italians didn't have the industry to produce their good designs, or the Med would have been a much harder fight.
Troop and armor coordination as well, i wouldnt say necessarily better, but they generally didnt have time to screw with dumb ideas like Germany. Had they focused more on simple destroyers like this early on and used more compatible tactics it would have been a nightmare for the M4s

Well depend what do you mean.. there were definitely weapon that the Italian produce that were superior to Germans like the motobomba fff which the Germans themselves consider it superior to Ani other weapon they had and ordered 2000 of them or for example the g55 similar story however Italian industry was really poor in WW2 they fought many conflict before and had no resources whic mean that while they were good design their industry was not able to produce them with the same quality of other nation for example we had to use bolt in our tanks...
Italian soldiers: Can we, like, get the Stug or more Semoventes but with more powerful guns? Italian high command: Don't worry, we have better SPGs at home! Better SPGs at home: a bizzare tractor with gun slapped on its rear In my opinion it could potentially be useful vechicle against Soviets or Allies, but it was very vulnerable to enemy fire. I also was available in far too small numbers to make a real diffrence.
The Italian semovente were actually feared by the allies they had good gun that could penetrated theyr armor at long range they had mid armor some of them had 80-100 mm armor however not sloped so only works at long range. But they did perform good even the Germans decided to continue them when they took over
Logistics would be a pain in the tush sending these to Russia. But they may prove useful over there as infantry assist. But will be a sitting duck for T-34s.
if this thing find an hinding spot and shoot first, the T-34 would be easily penetrated by the 90mm, the problem is that there were often more than a single T-34. The real problem was that by 1943 Italy had so many gun calibers, the L series had the 20mm and 36mm guns, the M series had the 47mm, the Semovente and P series had the 75, 90 and 105mm guns, they even had captured french and soviet tanks in their service, no wonder they refused the German offer to produce Pz.IVs and Panthers in Italy.
A problem was recognized, and a solution was attempted. That's about all you can say for this poor thing. There was also an unsuccessful attempt to make a full tank with the 90/53 cannon, right? Isn't that what the P43 bis is? Only a model though, was never finished.
Yeah that was the p43bis . However this semovente perform well in long range it was just a temporary solution not a permanent one. The p43bis was either to be armed with this same gun or slightly lighter version the 90/43.
Thanks for having me on as a narrator for this one, definitely an interesting vehicle within Italy's armored vehicle history

This thing has a special place in my heart because of an RTS called RUSE, where it’s the best mid game tank destroyer for any faction.
