I'm often asked by one or more heirs or executors after the death of a loved one, "When and where is the "Reading of the WIll"?
People see things on TV and in the movies regarding Wills that are not realistic in common practice. The reality is that I've been involved in many, many estate settlements, but I've never been part of, or conducted, a formal reading of the will.
While there may be no such thing as a reading of the will, estate settlements typically go smoothest when, after a person dies, information such as the last will, a list of assets and debts, and a comprehensive plan of action are disbursed (often by email) to all of the participants in the estate settlement.

Thank you for posting this. My sibling thought my dads will was going to be read aloud just like in the TV show Dallas or maybe it was Falcon Crest.

So if the executor is the only person in possession of a will and will not probate it, there is no way to know who the beneficiaries are and what they are entitled to. If the executor does not share information in the will, how would you know who is entitled to what?

You're lucky in one respect. I'm under the UPC, so I only represent the executor. Your system, where you represent all the heirs, is better IMHO.

I didn’t hear you say that any one named in the will or was going to get something from the estate would get a copy of the will. Or is that not a requirement

My mother has been talking about her will ever since she's been diagnosed with cancer 4 years ago. She has constantly changed it based on her mood and over even the slightest argument or disagreement between any of us children and her.

@The Mango she has been bi polar and unpredictable our entire lives but since her diagnosis she has used life insurance as leverage. I couldn't imagine doing what she's done to my own children. It's manipulative and borderline evil.

If somebody had it in their Will that I am to receive X amount of money , can I decline to accept it because my own salary is strong enough to support myself and my family etc, - how would that work?

READING OF A WILL.😅😅😅😅😅 A WILL IS JUST A PIECE OF PAPER HERE. I WAS EVERYTHING ON MY BIRTH MOM'S WILL. Bank account burial insurance, I even inherited a truck on her will I'm even on her living will, and her stepson is not. . her stepson is in control of it all.. so what do you do when you don't have money to pay a lawyer🤔 you walk away..💯 percent 100% here 😅. Because that's all I can do. they don't work with me or tell me anything. 🖕Lawyer.

I have a question regarding the time frame for settling a trust. I just saw someone say you have to wait 120 days in Ca to allow time for people to contest. Is this the same everywhere. Thanks
