    Incredible that after almost two years, this is still THE BEST tutorial about Hornet Startup on CV .. wish you could update it to include the recently released Supercarrier Module; that would make more realistic the Taxi & Launch phases of the tutorial. Greetings.

      Yeah I am looking for the why of things at least a basic response to it is a lot for visual-hinged brains or at least not mnemonic pure approach and also for cultivating passion.

    I know it has been a long time since you uploaded this video, but despite what everyone else said, I enjoyed it. It is nice to get a real life overview of how planes are started. Wouldn't it be awesome if DCS would implement a plane captain to oversee your start-ups for all modules. I've tried to do something like this for EOR. It's a bit plastic but it makes the experience seem that much more real.

    I’m super late to the DCS party but this was a great tutorial. Didn’t feel rushed like others . I still need to learn the alphabet lol but you made it in a way that I was still able to follow along .

    Future reference you don’t drop tail hook when wheels too coamings. I know it’s just a sim but in real life we don’t drop tail hooks when parked on the deck edge. This prevents tail hook dropping on the coamings or in the nets. In this situation you would do 3 down then when ready for launch the plain captain (PC) when pass controls over to me (yellow shirt) I would give the break down the aircraft (chains and chocks) then taxi the bird forward until cleared then signal to the pilot to drop his tail hook. Just in case anyone wants to sim it right just like we do on the carriers. There is only a few parking spots that you can do 4 down and that is the line and the 4 row and the finger

    The only thing this game is missing is ground crew interaction. I know it would be an absolute pain to implement, but damn would it be worth it!

      somewhen in the future a whole carrier module is planned to be released by ED, which will supposedly include realistic carrier ops with ground crew.

      You would need a really Really good monitor to read the hand signals of the ground crew, the number of fingers at start-up indicate which engine to start as well as whether they are starting the APU or a "Huffer". The number of fingers also indicate whether to drop the tail hook or not in a 3-down or 4-down check, so I would go blind trying to do it on my laptop.

    CW Lemoine mentioned they would put the BAT into Override first to test the A circuit. Then as you switch from override to normal it only takes about 1 second for the reset and you can test the B circuit. Saves some time.

    You also have to arm your seat BEFORE you start to taxi on the carrier and they have good reasons for that, again it's in the NATOPS

    Ever since the OpenBeta release update for 2019. I am here at time index 7:27 because I am having stabs issues not resetting to 0 at cold start on land. Stab values always goes to 12 as soon as I take off, I can't go any faster than 285 knots, my rear flaps are point the jet up @ stab 22>. Setting to auto, half, down, fcs resets don't work. Twice I reinstalled Beta version , still doesn't work , so I watch this reinstalling DCS for May 2019. STABs - how did you input the values to 16 from 12f?

      Just use your trim up and down buttons to change the values

      @@TrickerDCS , I uninstalled the OpenBeta and resinstalled the DCS, F-18 flies as you demonstrated. Not sure where to find the button to enter values for trim, other than pulling aft on the stick. Now I got to reprogram my F14. Thank you for the response, do you have a link where to input trim values? Just found it from check list, hold the V key and use up and down arrows to change values of trim.

      You don't "enter" the values. All you do is hit the takeoff trim button which sets 12, then you hold the trim up button until it reads 16 or whatever you want.

    According to the NATOPS checklist before the FCS bit the flaps have to be raised to Auto and the paddle switch has to be pulled simultaneously with the FCS reset button and only then the flaps are dropped to half and the FCS bit performed. This also means the FCS bit is performed with NWS off. Is this not how it's actually done, or is this step unnecessary and NWS on doesn't cause issues during FCS bit?

      Appreciate your input, remember the NATOPS is 10 years old for the C and these are updated procedures by real world hornet drivers. Not saying your wrong, do as you wish with the sim. My objective was to show how I was told to start this bad boy up.

      Tricker , thank you for this much needed tutorial. Please keep up your good work. On the note of FCS BIT, can the folded wings cause any adverse effects to the FCS BIT tests ? Is it better to perform FCS BIT at the catapult instead, where the ailerons are set to move freely ?

    Basically, The Hornet Fact Check is valid...!! If you do all of the steps in the training cold start (minus coordinating with the real life ground crew here (Phucking Ayyyeee BTW...!!🤘) ...You essentially could turn an F-18 on in real life with no "Cautions" populated upon taxi time...!! Ha..!! 😜 I just learned where to see the nose trim inside of the cockpit vs eyeballing it via where the velocity vector is after takeoff...!! YES...!! ✊ Thanx...!! 😎

    Just an observation, the current hornet version we have does not have GPS/EGI. Per the NATOPS Non-GPS aircraft use NAV and not IFA as the primary INS mode. The SME is used to the GPS enabled procedures, so this is currently not correct because we don't have GPS yet in this version. Great videos by the way!

    Just wondering how you intoduce fuel into the engines no mention of fuel pumps being turned on and when do throttles get set to idle from the off position

      he does mention it. its not like some little cessna, the hornet introduces fuel by moving the thrust lever out of "off" to "idle detent". thats what hes talking about when the IFEI RPM hits 15%. He mentions the default key combination to bring the engine to idle. In doing so it adds fuel and it will start the engine.

    How do I switch nose wheel steering Low/High?
    There is ko key binding in controls and can't find the key in cockpit.

      If you hold the nws steering button it goes into high. Also if wings are folded you will always be in high

    This was interesting, I love a game that lets you do everything as it would be. I'd be really interested to see an actual scramble procedure, surely there would be a rushed version if you have an enemy popup group 100 miles out and closing, could you do something like that maybe you have Im new.

      IRL the pilots would do all these checks before hand as to get into the "Alert Aircraft" and go with only a final check, wipe out, and AO's Arm/De-Arm. so the Scramble procedure wont be as crazy as your imagining.

      Lots of bad tutorial videos out there so if you could do them all right, including tips and tricks, would be nice. 😉
      Either its some mumbeling fool that takes forever to explain the most basic things (no mentions) or it’s they skip over half of the most relevant and important stuff. (Grim Reapers)
      Radio (and srs implemetation)
      Navigation
      Landing
      A/A combat
      Countermeasures
      Multiplayer tips and tricks (both F/A-18 specific and general for different server modes)
      En route procedures for different missions
      Controls set up
      Don’t get me wrong, I’ve flown flight sims since I was nine, started taking flying lessons when I was 15 and I was even a lieutenant in the army so I’m not completely lost but omg, american 80’s military aircraft were very button and numbers heavy. Swedish airforce aircraft have more automation and use psychologically intuitive symbols for presenting information. Look at the Viggen HUD for example. No wall of abstract numbers in the displays that the brain has to translate into situational awareness or punshing a hundred tiny rubber buttons during battle. It’s a different design culture. It just takes some getting used to. Numbers are exact. Lines and circles, not so much, but they give a quick picture. Imagine for example if course deviation in navigation was presented in numbers instead of the course deviation line... It sure would be exact but it would drain the brain of energy working like that for hours on end.

    if you get the chance, could your pilot friend let us know what his dialouge usually was on the pre-launch check? when they wipe the controls they say stuff like "good ends, good hi's, good low's..." etc. what does that all mean? oh and thanks for making this video :)

      Unless things have changed since the mid-1980s, there's little or no verbal communication between the pilot and those on the flight deck or in Pri-Fly. The Air Boss in Pri-Fly pretty much only gets involved if there's a significant problem, and the pilots and flight deck crews are trained to and used to communicating almost exclusively by hand signals.

      @David Barak I mean things pilots say to themselves or their RIO/WSO. I've heard things in video games which must be based off some truth. When they wipe the controls they must scan the instruments and verbally confirm what they see

I don't know about anything but Vikings, but the communications between the front seats and back seats was minimal - the only thing I really ever said was "lights" if the "eject" light test was good on the console in front of me, "knockers (no, not what you think - "head knockers")" when we armed our seats (we armed them by flipping a lever behind our heads) or if there was some problem that required a troubleshooter. As for the two seats up front, I can't remember what they said, but I would assume it was pretty standard stuff, out-loud ticking off items of the checklist (more the pilot than the guy in the right seat). Since we in the back couldn't really see much of what was going on (but it was pretty obvious because we were at full power), the pilot would tell us things like "wiping out the controls," "there's the salute," "good shot," just to keep us blind guys in the back informed. There was a bit of banter, not a ton, things like "Goin' for sliders after the recovery," or "Man, I took a nasty shit this morning." Yeah, people in navy air can be a bit... frat house-like, but in a good way (once the Tailhook scandal was cleared up).
      One thing the ED people should do if they beef up conversational audio is to use realistic callsigns. Maverick - nope (although I did know Hacksaw, Killer and Gator), but things like Gumby, Horsehead, Bruuuuuuuce, Lumpy... (or in my case, Slo-Mo). There were also callsigns based on last names, like Smitty or Tank (for someone named Sherman). We had one guy whose two syllable name _[redacted]_rskin; I was really, really hoping they'd bestow Foreskin as his callsign but I was vetoed. And for the record, Goose's "accidental" middle finger during the pre-flight brief in Top Gun was the most realistic gesture in the film. Interesting factoid: The real world F-14 pilot that was filmmed flipping the bird was in one of our Tomcat squadrons, VF-51, the same one Neil Armstrong flew with during the Korean War. That pilot, Scott Altman, ended up becoming a Space Shuttle commander. One of our flight surgeons, David Brown, (who became an A-6 pilot _after_ he'd been a flight surgeon for several years) was a Space Shuttle mission specialist. Unfortunately, his only flight was on Columbia, which broke up over Texas in 2003.

    How You get on this parking spot? In ME I can only use static objects (planes) to the specific parking positions (through the SAT view), but not my plane , Im still on the middle of the carrier. Thanks

      David Lattak it's kind of a pain and requires alot of tweaking with the static planes, it can be done, but it seems to be a bug that ED is working on. Wish I could tell exactly what's going on but I'm not entirely sure.

      On the FCS page on the DDI, you should see STAB - number - STAB. Push stick trim down until it goes to 16 or 17 or whatever you need for takeoff

    So in this tutorial why are some steps flipped from the ground start up example during ground start up u rotated the Bleed air from norm to norm then closed the canopy and in this video u did it reversed is that by accident like your going off memory or were u talking to a different hornet pilot that has a slightly different method of doing it I guess what I’m trying to get at is the start up set in stone like does it have to be done exactly those ways for ground and carrier start up and if so is it standard operating procedure in that order

      The shore one was a marine pilot and the CV one a hornet navy instructor. Honestly, everyone is taught one way and then as you get experience, you make your own flow to accomplish all the same items.

    This is probably a really stupid question but why would u retract the launch bar before you launch?? Like surely that's what pull you off the catapult??

      It's locked into catapult shuttle, and when you go airborne the bar with automatically retract before you retract the gear

IF you could let me know what your frame-rate is just sitting on the deck of the carrier awaiting catapult launch, and then also the frame rate once you turn up into the sky I would greatly appreciate it. I want something to compare to and those two benchmarks will help me out greatly. (I'm trying to do some fine-tuning on my gaming sim).     *No, no, no, no, NO.*
    Spread your wings BEFORE being hooked up to the cat. _What if the cat fired early?_ It's happened before. You want your wings spread BEFORE you're hooked up to the cat. (There have been cases where aircraft have been launched with folded wings. How in the hell that was allowed to happen with so many people keeping watch. The pilots failed, the shooters failed, the deck edge operators failed, the Air Boss and his crew failed. Miraculously, some or all of the aircraft made it back to fly again.) In fact, pilots should have their aircraft as ready to launch as possible before the launch bar ends up in front of the shuttle. You know how the green-shirted deck edge operators have their hands up just before an aircraft launch? That's literally a safety sign, confirming to all involved that no fingers are near the launch button. And it's a similar situation with any member of the flight crew that can deploy a weapon - they have their hands up and visible as the ordnancemen are performing the final on-deck arming activities: fingers away from buttons. If it _can_ go wrong, it _will_ go wrong at some point.
    *No, no, no, no, NO.*
    Full military power or afterburner BEFORE the salute. You never know exactly what the timing is going to be between the time you've saluted and when the deck edge operator (in the catwalk, wearing green) or the shooter (if operating from one of the two bubbles) has completed their checks and hits the launch button. One reason for uncertain timing (and it would really only increase the delay, not shorten it) is that the shooter has to time the launch so that by the time the aircraft reaches the end of the cat, the bow of the ship is coming up - you don't want the bow pointing down when the aircraft leaves the deck. (I don't know how this is handled when the shooter is in the bubble. They may only work from the bubble in calm seas, I can't remember.)
    In carrier aviation, everyone operates under the assumption that an accident is waiting to happen. (And I've been involved in at least one minor accident. To give you an idea of the power of a steam catapult, it's possible to launch a Viking with its brakes set, with the wheels not spinning. Don't ask me how I know, but I will say that two new wheels and two new tires were needed.) This is why wings are always spread before hooking up to the cat and why the aircraft is at full power (for that aircraft type and weight) before the salute (or before the pilot flicks the external lights on at night in lieu of a salute).
    Minor correction: JBD is Jet Blast Deflector, not Jet Blast Door. Interesting fact #1: They're water-cooled so that the next aircraft can taxi over it just a few seconds after the previous aircraft has launched. Interesting semi-fact #2:I'd heard that the JBDs on the Ford use thermal tiles similar to what was used on the Space Shuttles, intended to eliminate the need for water-cooling. I can't find a reference online that confirms this, although I do see that the Navy has been investigating it.

    Also IFA is the GPS mode, so it won't work as GPS is not currently implemented. If it does, then it's a bug :P. See NATOPS.

    Hopefully the ED team will include full interaction between the pilot and groundcrew so we don't look like such big nerds roleplaying this shit, haha. Should be included in the Super Carrier module or, I don't see why if they went through the effort to make it for the SC in that case, reskin them and set them on the ground of airfields, marked as blue or red.
