Thanks so much Mr. Hicks for another engrossing presentation. Re: Laura Secord, she was a real figure in (and heroine of) Canadian history, specifically the War of 1812. She warned a British garrison of an approaching American army after walking miles through thick forest (in Upper Canada, near present-day Niagara Falls). So, the chocolate company adopted her persona.

Thanks Kevin it's great to hear from people that know the difference between what flags represent and what they mean to people, I used to put up a quad of flags over a memorial to English, Dutch, American and (because of the rules) Australian, submariners. As a result I almost fell into the trap of becoming a flag nerd, not because of the nations involved, but for the people that hold them dear. Clearly your Turkish friends loved you mightily to for ever connect the Union flag to your good self. Huge respect too you. 🙂🇦🇺🏴‍☠️

Thanks for the video - lovely story.
One of my first jobs as a midshipman on a Frigate was to oversee the flying of flags, including the Union Jack from the jack staff, on leaving Portsmouth harbour.
I went forward with two ratings who fixed the flag to the halyard and hoisted it onto the staff and off we went.
After passing the Admiralty offices at the entrance to the harbour I was called to the bridge where the Captain reprimanded me for putting the Union Jack up, upside down!
It was a prank by the ratings - who knew what they were doing - and I've never forgotten which way up the flag goes...
Wellington, Kipling, Churchill and Lt Chard at Rorkes Drift all called it the "Union Jack" so that's OK with me.

    @garychynne1377 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

thumbs up. much respect you've had quite a career. as a child i simply thought it was the prettiest flag and felt off when it was replaced. thank you for the history. 2 years is longer than my 6 months there. i respected the turks i met more. i remember arriving in nicosia and being trucked to kyrenia. about every 300 yds was a roadblock and a bren gun at least. when we left six and a half months later there were only a few road blocks. i was invited to a british base to a christmas party that year and brits are a amazing bunch. i hadn't thought of it in years they were very cordial and outgoing. much respect to an outsider. i saw small towns in ruin from fighting. saw people eating out of our slop barrels from the mess and competing with dogs for a bit of meat or potatoe. one man had clothes fashioned from sand bags. i never saw such poverty. cyprus is a beautiful place. people still live in the castle town of famagusta. you must have seen a lot in the military police. now i am remembering to much to write. back to the flag i was born under. there has been plenty in canada that have no love for britain it not being there ancestral home. so the flag went for the present one. the odd time i hear get rid of the govenor general representing the queen. it is my favorite flag. god bless

@@thehistorysquad hi kevin thank you. i was born in belloram newfoundland in 1945. newffie was a colony of britain at that time so i guess i'm a colonial brit. my father was a colonial policeman called a ranger. he got a citation from the king once for walking 50 miles to bring back 3 escaped prisoners. poor dad caught up to them on a railway track. one young fella began to cry. dad took out his pistol and said they had to come back. he was not a mean man.
one granfather was a scott robertson. one was welsh chynne. the williams were all english.
i must tell another dad story. my mother said once this is the kind of policeman your father was. he arrested a young guy for stealing fishing nets. my mom was at the little jail and dad went to the store and got her a ice cream which was a rarety in 1945. the young prisoner said what is that i've never seen that before. so my dad went and got the young guy a ice cream. my mom said that is the kind of policeman your father was. sounds like a pretty nice guy i said. now i remember to many stories. he was not a mean man. to much writing again. thank yew kevin. take care gare

I was also in the UK Armed Forces, Army as were generations of my family before me. We always referred to the flag as the Union Jack.
At the Union of the Crowns in 1603, James (French Jacques for James, and he signed his proclamation as Jacques) devised the flag as you recount.
Now with James (Jacques) accession to the crown of England, as well as Scotland, the French referred to it as the "Union Jacques" Union of James
and I believe that is where the Union Jack came from but Union Flag is also acceptable.
Excellent story and the Bovril company also have some charming information on the subject.

The original version didn't have the Cross of Saint Patrick until about 200 years after creation of the flag of Great Britain.
It's also one if the few flags with the length being double the height, although can also be found in 3:5 height to length ratio. Most other flags are in the proportion 2:3.

    Wow!! What a story.
Only learned the other day between the difference between the Union Flag and Union Jack... Wich stopped me in my tracks as I never knew... Well as they say... Every Day Is a School Day.

Thanks for the lesson. Never really knew about the background even though it's in the top left corner of our Aussie flag.
Well done in Cypress. The presentation is real proof!!!

As an American, whenever I start hearing about the British monarchy, my eyes kinda roll back in my head. Like, I need to remember presidents, I can't be bothered with someone else's leadership.
But you make it more palatable, Kevin :)

3:09 Ive never seen that st patrick cross (I should lol my family on dads side is Irish). NOW I understand why the cross is weirdly uncentred/unsymmetrical like that. Always made drawing the Union Jack a pain in the arse as a kid lol 3:36 its a bit wonky though! 😋

Beautifully flag. I treasure a Union flag sticker a Royal Navy sailor gave me when I was in Basra attached to the British army in exchange for cleaning her rifle (I’m a retired US soldier). Good memories 😊 I also have American flags from different bases I was in Iraq and Afghanistan.
