    📝📝📝📝📝 Notes 📝📝📝📝📝
    - Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
    • Definition: mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event
    • High popularity in Medicine
    • * Reason: They can sell you a treatment -- Which means they make profits
    - Post-traumatic Growth
    * Bad circumstances are the fuel for personal Growth.
(to the extent that it does not kill you)
    • Low popularity in Medicine
    • * Reason: They can't sell you anything!
    • This happens because we need stressors.
    •* Different cases:
    *** In civilizations....
    **** Scarce resources -- Stress -- Progress & Success
    *** In companies....
    **** Chaos -- Stress -- Progress & Success
**** Best predictor of bankruptcy: Steady earnings
***** Shows no adaptation to the current environment
"One must have chaos in oneself to give birth to a dancing star."
    - Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The more something fluctuates (without sinking/breaking), the more robust / resistant becomes.
    ** e.g./ Animal / Human Evolution
    📝📝📝📝📝 Reflections 📝📝📝📝📝
    - Finding meaning through Pain....
"Why would you look in the darkest places? Because in there you can find what still shines. And if it can shine in the darkest places, you know it is a real light. So, look at the things you don't want to look at. You have to do it."
    - Jordan Peterson (on London Real Show)
(Once you find the real lights, align your life with them. And you won't lack meaning in your life.)
"The darker the night, the brighter the stars, The deeper the grief, the closer is God!"
    - Fyodor Dostoevsky
    - Not taking smart risks leads to sub-optimal outcomes...
"Show me a guy who's afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time." - Lou Brock

    Love Taleb
    However
Why does he mention that too much stress can kill you and a little can lead to growth
But, at the same time mention that Singapore has NO RESOURCES which would mean a lot of stress and Saudi Arabia has many resources
Would be interesting to hear all your opinions
    Much Love

He says the stuff that I can't. A war made me better. I understand that PTSD can happen but I don't think it is nearly as prevalent as people like to make it out to be. People love to play the victim.

It's not about resources or lack of resources, at least not in modernity, it's about IQ. Saudi Arabia has a below average IQ and Singapore has an extremely above average IQ. Saudi Arabia should actually be doing far worse but their oil saves them dramatically. There's studies that have been done on the matter but they are not politically correct. GDP follows the national IQ very strongly. The exceptions for increases in GDP are tourism and oil and those for decrease are a history of communism and war. Taleb doesn't "believe" in IQ but that's a mistake.

    • @joyjoey85
      @joyjoey85 ปีที่แล้ว

I’m from Singapore. Our IQ is high because our government recognizes that we have no natural resources and invest in people as the resources. It is strategy. Much focus and money is spend on education & upskilling people to be competitive. Because we have no natural resources to bail us out. This is repeated time and time again here.

    • @throwacnt7603
      @throwacnt7603 ปีที่แล้ว

@@joyjoey85 The vast majority of IQ is explained through genetics although education does play a role. It's more likely that due to your geography the people of that area had to figure out how to survive in those environments and as such they relied much more on their intelligence. The thing is Taleb is against IQ as a predictor which is a misguided take, to say the least.

Post traumatic stress depends upon the amount of stress received. An extreme end can be seen in survivors of the First World War. Then some people can withstand stress some shatter. So it's pretty arrogent for this guy to make such generalisations.

Most if not all of humanities accomplishments came during war time or during an existential crisis. Dont take it literally but adapt the concept - eg. quit your job and burn your bridges or withhold gratification until you achieve your goals.
