Speaking as somebody who grew up in an abusive family, you're much better off with no family than an abusive one.

There's the family that you're born into and then there's the one you make! You walked away from your own family so that you can build a better one when you find the right person to have a child\ children with. Now you know what to do and what not to do. That is the first lesson in life that anyone can ever teach you. A wise man learns from the mistakes of others are fool learns from his own.

My second time watching this movie and still angers me. That phrase "I'm Sorry " "I won't do it again " is the biggest piece of bull I've ever heard.

yeah, the I will never do it again rang in my ear...how many times have I heard that? The men cajoling and guilt tripping the wives, Is there a book of those sayings out there? One that triggered me was the rich guy rationalizing how they had to get the big car but could not afford her schooling...the old gas light bait and switch, I had one counselor agree with my ex on doing that!!! This was one session...my ex pulled the old I am the nice guy she is violent drunk crap, and the counselor bought it. So much of this still goes on today, it makes me sick

Yes it is, through all demographics INCLUDING women, who physically abuse their partners far more than we know. I'm pretty sure a good friend of mine is being abused, but he won't permit ONE WORD about his wife. She's a master manipulator, always keeping the gaslight on high.
We think it's bad for chicks in our society? Think of the shame abused guys live with, man. I will include all in my prayer tonight; may our heavenly Father enfold the used and abused with special warmth and strength.

Sometimes people grow up in unhealthy homes so they want to mean it when they say I’m sorry I do it again that doesn’t mean that it’s okay to do things like that but when you grow up that way that kind of behavior is second nature to those people and to the people who grow up around it so it’s not that simple just to tell people to not to put up with it my point is that often people want to stop that kind of behavior but they don’t know how to

Yes, this definitely had triggers for me. My husband didn't start beating on me untill I got pregnant with our first and only child. It continued untill one night he slapped the bottle out of her mouth. I never believed in blind rage until that night. Don't remember what happened but when I realized I was on top of him with a broken broom handle. He was missing teeth and had a broken nose I was still in a rage. Took him to the hospital Both of us were black and blue . Back then there was no DV unless the person wanted to press charges. On the way home I told him to sleep with one eye open and if he ever raised his hand to me or my Daughter again, I'd kill him. Next day he moved back with his parents and I filed for divorce. Haven't seen him since and still single to this day.

I just found this movie and it definitely triggered memories for me. I was married to this proverbial great guy who was wonderful to everyone else but me. The beatings started after we moved in together. I was so embarrassed because I had always said if some man ever put his hands on me I'd have him arrested. Yet I allowed him and for about 5 years he continued. I'd leave and go back and it was horrible. I finally had enough and by this time. I had 2 son's. That gave me the strength to say no more and have him arrested.

But, when he came back, I thought it was because he loved me, that wasn't it, and lie. Being arrested only makes them meaner. That last 11yrs. I see the comments are same as what we have written, and this was back in 1978, 45 yrs ago, seems like yesterday. How are these men raised to be men?

I too am a survivor as I thought I made the right prince in my life. He was my one and only. The problem lied in too many faces and too many single men who deny they re alcoholics. I couldn t stop the chain of men I met through the years that were alcoholics. Why did Hof put these men in my path? I learned to function on my own. I don t need a man . They pick me and when I saw the social drinking and parties he wanted to attend I found my husband adoring women who had money. All three men were good men and each were a of church goers. We were involved in church activities, but it was the women he worked with who he partied with while I was at home with our four children..They each started coming home on time then later and later. Yes there was always another pretty face. I was beaten and he told me "You re lucky that I don t put your head between that door and the wall, like the rest of the men do at my job. Did you see the gals I work with? They wore sunglasses to cover up their two black eyes, well that could be you." That did it after three beatings I suffered and going back home. Ieft after going to my 3rd YWCA Battered women classes. I tried two other marriages and I quit! I m done with any man with no more dates . They re all the same kind of men. I too was put in he mental institution. The directors tested me in groups and decided I was a target for the men I chose and all five psych doctors apologized to me. In fact they were going to send me to college free on the rehab program to be their Activity director. I could live at the center and teach the others what I d experienced as an Iowa Farmer s Wife my profession for 14 years. I left happy till I met another gold digger. I was beat up by him and left,no more me for me as I m alone and help my grown adult children. I m a butterfly and I don t have to be told what to do anymore..

I've Chosen to stay single because I was an abuser.... And the funny not so funny thing is... I tried to get help and they just laughed! 😒 they like there's help you should. NOT put up with THAT. I said no... Madam I am the violent one and I could hear them laughing their butts off! The police laughed at my fiancee when his mom took him to report me.... I'm glad that now violent females are getting arrested and prosecuted... Because it's very very hard for a man to report. I will stay single because I absolutely do NOT trust myself... I'm not saying that works for anyone else BUT I'm strong in my faith and I have reached out to the ones I've hurt and told them I am truly sorry for putting my hands on them and I had no right to do so unfaithful or NOT.... They were shocked! And thanked me. I also asked them not to allow what I did affect them in their new relationships. I grew up in Martial Arts so trust me i can be lethal.... It was no hair pulling.. It was not a laughing matter! Everyone I pray none of you are going through this and if you are? GET OUT BEFORE THEY CARRY YOU OUT.

The first one got custody of my only son, because he got someone to lie on the witness stand. Years later, I had a daughter, but unfortunately her father was abusive also. In a different way, but, still. My daughter is four years old now. But at least I still have her. I am getting ready to go back and fight for my son, though it won't be easy, as my son's father is very, very aggressive, and I don't have much money. But, my son deserves to know his mom still loves him. ❤ I will pray for you, if that's okay. God bless!

I remember watching that film, several times. One of the toughest watches ever. I also read the book by Francine Hughes. While I cheered when she was acquitted, the story does not end there.....nor did it really end all that happily, to my surprise. Francine did go on, eventually, to become an LPN I believe....but she actually married another abusive man! Not like Mickey, by all accounts, but not a very kind man either. But here is the part that shocked me: FRANCINE allegedly was arrested for beating her youngest daughter Nicole! She reportedly blackened both her eyes. Also Francine for all her haughtiness about drinking......developed an issue with alcohol herself. But then, I didn't always admire her in the book either. She had MANY chances to have a new life, when she had actually escaped Mickey! So when this child-hitting allegation appeared.......So, I lost all sympathy for her when I read that. I even threw out her book. If she could go through all she did, get acquitted for killing her husband when few women nowadays would.....& go on to act like that?? She was horrid too.

I agree. I remember wondering the same thing. But it was true: Police were literally NOT ALLOWED to arrest abusers unless they physically saw the abuse taking place, which naturally seldom tended to happen. It was only in recent decades that this changed at all. In my state of Connecticut, it wasn't until Tracy Thurman was almost killed by her brutal husband & sued the police department that they instituted The Thurman Law. The law stats that here the police have to arrest the accused abuser regardless of 'proof'...note this applies to both men & women. The other catch: The police are only required to hold the abuser for 24 hrs....enough time for you to pack up & leave at least. Its so sad that it took this attack on this poor woman & her court case to create the law! Worst: Their son grew up & was arrested for domestic violence! :( I would be soooo furious with my son for that. @@Macias8200

Starts out with him putting you down, making ugly remarks and comments about you...then escalates to start screaming at you, verbal abuse...THEN IT GETS PHYSICAL! You definitely want to LEAVE when you see the beginning signs! I've heard people say that if they start verbally abusing you, 99% of the time, it WILL eventually get physical. it's pretty easy to get a restraining order, especially now that everyone is online all the time and the violent people are often dumb enough to make threats over the phone or social media...
What do you think the better solution would be, to have a 24/7 police escort? That's just not feasible.
The best protection you can have is a gun, that's really it. There's plenty of services and places to go, and plenty of info on how not to be found. It's actually pretty easy to get away, unless you're being locked in and watched 24/7.
It's just up to the victim to make the decision to go..
There's only so much that can be done, a gun is the only thing that can put them on even ground.
