People that have never been abused they will never understand a person that is in abusive relationship. Most people think of you as weak, but that is not that case at all. The abuse is both physical and psychological. The abuser's objective is to destroy you from the inside out. If you have kids with that person they will use them to threaten you, etc. Since the abuser are masters of manipulation, they know how to act nice in front of others. These abusers are narcissist and all their only care is to control. They have no empathy. The more they see you hurting the more they enjoy their control Yes, you can walk out! but it is not as easy as most people not ableto understand abuse work. The abuse is mainly PSYCHOLOGICAL. I raised my two sons as a single mother, they're grown men now. I understand hardships & sacrifice too. But; there isn't anything I wouldn't do for them, we're very close. I didn't suffer any physical abuse during my marriage but my ex was & sadly still is a raging alcoholic. I couldn't stay in that environment & expose my boys to that. I'm thankful for the support of family & friends & my church family. We made it through. There are scars though maybe none physical but they're there.
Danny boy sends so many flowers it could be her funeral. He says kids are great! Really the sweet kids are have night terrors with their mom front and center.
What a beautifully made film. It tackled a really difficult issue in a way that anyone could understand. I am not a parent and thankfully I have never been in an abusive environment. However, I fully appreciate the difficulty people in these situations face. Films like these are so important in making others aware
I get so infuriated watching how unfair the system can be, especially when it comes to children. To think that women will stay with an abusive man because they can't afford to flee is sad. No one should be stuck in a situation like that. I'm all for families staying together but I believe women need to be self supportive if the need arises. I am married and stay because I choose to be here, but have the means to leave if I ever needed to .
She did the right thing after regaining some confidence overcoming the challenges. She fought back for her children. Make this story an inspiration to fight back if you are suffering mental and physical abuse.. Every challenge you face makes you stronger and stronger and gives you your sense of self and dignity back. Taking your power back leaves the man in the same way you once felt.

Nothing gives them the right to abuse their spouse. When it starts, walk away as fast as you can. It's not just men who have all the power, women have power too. When I lived in Germany, I never heard of such thing. It probable happened, but no one ever spoke about it. I learned to speak the language quite fast, He had me under his thumb and I totally felled helpless. I took his abuse for 7 years. By then I knew enough so that I didn't have to stand for it. I happened to believe everything he told me about a women's right. Then of course, I met other woman who talked about it quite openly. I asked him over and over to send me back to Germany. Of course, he would not give me permission to go back. That was when I believed everything, he told me how the law worked over here. I was afraid I would lose my children. Had I talked to other women about it, I would have known better. He didn't want a divorce, but by then I knew that there was nothing he could do to me. He stalked me for years, even though he married another woman. He was ordered to pay me child support. He never did. I really didn't care about that. I was working and could support myself and my children. If I would have reported him for that, what good would that do me? He be in jail and couldn't pay me a penny. Besides, I wanted nothing from him. I told the judge that. He said that's not how it works here; you are entitled for his support. I wanted nothing to do with him anymore. Didn't wanted to be reminded of him in any shape or form. It was a big relieve to be rid of him. After I realized that I was not helpless, I left him and never regretted it.

Seeing my ex-life playing out in front of my eyes. The physical aches, the mental anguish, the emotional pain, it is all thankfully distant now, but it used to be my reality a long long time ago. Thank God for the strength, courage and providence to leave and stand up for myself and my children 30 years ago. Had I stayed I may not have been here to comment and my children would be less stable people. I am still being treated for- and living with complex PTSD as a result and he, he is onto wife number 5 or 6 repeating history over and over and over again. At least my and my children's history will remain in the past where it belongs, no repeats due to a huge "No thank you" to relationships -- I simply cannot trust any man with my safety again since they all put their best foot forward until you are snared only to drop their mask and reveal their abusive tendencies later on. Please don't tell me that not all men are the same, the ones that come my way have all proven to be cut from the same cloth. I am independent, run my own business and am happily single, my life is uncomplicated now and it will stay that way.

Joanna Kerns is highly underrated. WOW she can put on such an emotional performance, this was so hard to watch. The children, though I don't know their names, also were amazing. They all were. This is so sad to the CORE of our being. What her own mother said was crushing. The truth, yes, however she did have a child. In a thousand ways, it happens every darn day. For the love of God, I wish, I DREAM, I could create, or invest my time in running, or to seriously HELP run a home for battered women with their children! I have SO much to donate; my heart, my ears, my time, and material things that they need to get on their feet. To be able [to try] to help with jobs and self confidence. For interviews......Idk, how do I do it? How do I know that if all I would be permitted to do is give clothing & items, that it would actually go to the women themselves? I am afraid they will not receive what they need. May God lead me to find a place in need. It is a helpless, empty, hollow emotion when you see this, and wish to help in some way. In our town, I do not know where they are.

Being on the run is not always safe. My husband found me and nearly killed me again. Finally I gave in and told him to go ahead and kill me. I assured him he would spend the rest of his life in prison. The police knew he was threatening my life. An investigator would be on his trail. I asked him if that's what he wanted? He walked away and I never saw him again. I spent the next 18 years in fear looking over my shoulder. Peace came when he died. May his soul rest in peace.

No. We all know not all parents were good to their kids so the kids want nothing to do with them when they need them. Because they didn't care for them. I have been there. The man that I laid down with and had 3 children for is a monster. He would beat me for no reason at all,sometimes he would wake up violent. He stabbed me,raped me,kicked me,honey you name it. Abuse is a serious matter.

This movie makes my insides twist. I've known 3 women (each a co-worker at various time) who lived in EXTREMELY ABUSIVE relationships. They felt and expressed just what Maryann did ... that their place was with the abusive man who "needed them" and always felt so sorry after each beating. 😡 It infuriated me. I offered my support and shared resources for shelters. They each felt loyalty and obligation to their partner/ husband/ abuser. No one can receive help until they admit they need help and are encouraged ... And so I pray. 🙏🏽

Never married , I've lived with 3 men in my life ! Not for the last 15, they all hit ,we won't mention all the other trauma I went thru!! This is why I raised my two beautiful girls on my own, these stories are hard to watch
The children were home when he locked her out. They heard her begging to come in. They heard him say that she’d never see her kids again. They saw the beatings! How can they, especially the boy, think she abandoned them. It’s not like the children were toddlers who don’t understand. They wittnessed.
Children are usually more impressionable than adults and don't want to accept what has happened as it involves a parent. Similar happened to me. I got beat up in front of my kids and kicked in the vagina, hemorraghing and dying. He kidnapped them and when I did get to speak to someone who talks to them had to hear how he told them I abandoned them and how they believe it. They witnessed the abuse, mind you and still somehow believe him. It's wild. Psychology is wild.
Please God help all women in this situation who want to leave but are afraid of losing their children ....please God comfort and help them because their life is truly hell

The rest was also terrible, but it was the mother - refusing to help her daughter - that disturbed me most... Especially since she had witnessed her own mother being abused, and had also fallen victim at her father's hand.

This is exactly true for battered wives. Not everyone is so lucky. When being in abusive relationship women will stick up for their spouse because they deathly afraid of what their moves are going to be. I’m one of the lucky woman who never faces this and I hope and pray I am never ever in this situation. I was in a very abusive relationship with my first husband. It’s hard to understand why a woman would put up with this type of treatment unless it happens to you but please keep your mind open and don’t judge consider yourself very lucky to never know what this feels like. We had two children yet he never abused them. That’s the part I don’t get with her. I’m one thing but my kids are another. I may not know how difficult it is to leave an abuser, but I'm a teacher and educational psychologist, hence I know what staying in an abusive relationship does to our kids. Most boys blame themselves for not being able to defend or protect their mums. They live with a lot of anger, and regrets, and are more likely to be abusers as well. They also get robbed of education because of getting into trouble at school, often. Most girls normalize abuse and grow into weak women, believing they can't live without a man, hence look to men for validation and affirmation. They become too dependent and believe that on their own, they stand no chance of happiness. I'm not being indifferent, but when we say we're staying for our kids while destroying them; is that not ignorance? We need to educate ourselves about these issues, for we have the responsibility to shape our kids' future. Divorce may trigger an adjustment disorder, depression, and anxiety in children, but with enough help; study shows that these kids turn out just fine. Abuse on the other hand may cause fear, and distrust which can escalate into lifelong psychological consequences that can manifest as educational difficulties, self-doubt, low self-esteem, difficulty forming and maintaining meaningful relationships, etc. Staying in an abusive relationship is like being an addict. When you can leave, you don't want to; when you want to, you can't. Unfortunately, we get destroyed in the process, inside and out, just like an addict. Even if it's just a slap on the wrist, literally; it's not a mistake. LEAVE, don't downplay it.

The mom Joanna Kerns was Brillant in her part, I think all moms can relate to her. It was painful to watch this but worth it. I told my partner in life to NEVER hit , before we got married and he never did . If there had been hitting I would have left right there and then . e.s.p 100% before you have kids . 1:12:24 If you ever think that a spouse would hit you ever , I say run for the mountains and never look back .I think it’s very important to set boundaries in one’s life from the very start .
I was most impressed by the boys acting! We all are familiar with the abuse of women and children. Till today the custody goes to financially more stable parent, without thinking what is best for the children! There are many movies about abused women , BUT this movie impressed me, because it shows also the cruelty of the parent, the mother of the abused woman. To hear your own mother saying to you: “I wish you weren’t ever born, you destroyed my life”, was another way of abuse!!! Your mother makes you responsible for her poor life, that really hurts. When Marianne’s mother told her of her father’s abuse to her mom and saved by a man she married with Magical Dreams in life then she came along and told her daughter Marianne that she should never had her. That crushed me. 😢 Marianne’s son and daughter will have a blessed life. I watched Part One. This recaps that movie. Now to finish watching the outcome. No need to watch part one, this is the same but some events that took place is not in the second. Great movie. Just wish to know what happened to her abusive husband. Prison? Marianne and children safe and enjoying life now. Without the fear. 2nd part should have more to this.

The physical aches, the mental anguish, the emotional pain, it is all thankfully distant now, but it used to be my reality a long long time ago.
Thank God for the strength, courage and providence to leave and stand up for myself and my children 30 years ago.
Had I stayed I may not have been here to comment and my children would be less stable people.
I am still being treated for- and living with complex PTSD as a result and he, he is onto wife number 5 or 6 repeating history over and over and over again.
At least my and my children's history will remain in the past where it belongs, no repeats due to a huge "No thank you" to relationships -- I simply cannot trust any man with my safety again since they all put their best foot forward until you are snared only to drop their mask and reveal their abusive tendencies later on.
Please don't tell me that not all men are the same, the ones that come my way have all proven to be cut from the same cloth.
I am independent, run my own business and am happily single, my life is uncomplicated now and it will stay that way.

This is so sad to the CORE of our being. What her own mother said was crushing. The truth, yes, however she did have a child. In a thousand ways, it happens every darn day.
For the love of God, I wish, I DREAM, I could create, or invest my time in running, or to seriously HELP run a home for battered women with their children! I have SO much to donate; my heart, my ears, my time, and material things that they need to get on their feet. To be able [to try] to help with jobs and self confidence. For interviews......Idk, how do I do it? How do I know that if all I would be permitted to do is give clothing & items, that it would actually go to the women themselves? I am afraid they will not receive what they need. May God lead me to find a place in need. It is a helpless, empty, hollow emotion when you see this, and wish to help in some way.

Being on the run is not always safe. My husband found me and nearly killed me again. Finally I gave in and told him to go ahead and kill me. I assured him he would spend the rest of his life in prison. The police knew he was threatening my life. An investigator would be on his trail. I asked him if that's what he wanted? He walked away and I never saw him again. I spent the next 18 years in fear looking over my shoulder. Peace came when he died. May his soul rest in peace.

I have been there. The man that I laid down with and had 3 children for is a monster. He would beat me for no reason at all,sometimes he would wake up violent. He stabbed me,raped me,kicked me,honey you name it. Abuse is a serious matter.

I've known 3 women (each a co-worker at various time) who lived in EXTREMELY ABUSIVE relationships.
They felt and expressed just what Maryann did ...
that their place was with the abusive man who "needed them" and always felt so sorry after each beating.

I offered my support and shared resources for shelters.
They each felt loyalty and obligation to their partner/ husband/ abuser.
No one can receive help until they admit they need help and are encouraged ...

The children were home when he locked her out. They heard her begging to come in. They heard him say that she’d never see her kids again. They saw the beatings! How can they, especially the boy, think she abandoned them. It’s not like the children were toddlers who don’t understand. They wittnessed.
Children are usually more impressionable than adults and don't want to accept what has happened as it involves a parent. Similar happened to me. I got beat up in front of my kids and kicked in the vagina, hemorraghing and dying. He kidnapped them and when I did get to speak to someone who talks to them had to hear how he told them I abandoned them and how they believe it. They witnessed the abuse, mind you and still somehow believe him. It's wild. Psychology is wild.
It's hard to explain but the children are manipulated too.
Please God help all women in this situation who want to leave but are afraid of losing their children ....please God comfort and help them because their life is truly hell

This is exactly true for battered wives. Not everyone is so lucky. When being in abusive relationship women will stick up for their spouse because they deathly afraid of what their moves are going to be. I’m one of the lucky woman who never faces this and I hope and pray I am never ever in this situation. My heart ❤️ goes out to these women who are in this situation and can’t get help to cry out desperateness. This woman’s mother was horrible couldn’t help her. Unbelievable. But the moral of this the law sucked back in those days and it’s like the women were in the wrong and the men were doing their husband duty to keep the women in line. Disgusting how she had to go underground just to protect her and her kids. Disgusting world of laws we have, which sucks.

I was in a very abusive relationship with my first husband. It’s hard to understand why a woman would put up with this type of treatment unless it happens to you but please keep your mind open and don’t judge consider yourself very lucky to never know what this feels like. We had two children yet he never abused them. That’s the part I don’t get with her. I’m one thing but my kids are another. I’d kill for them and I’d never allow a man to put his fingers on one of them. She should had went straight to police.

I may not know how difficult it is to leave an abuser, but I'm a teacher and educational psychologist, hence I know what staying in an abusive relationship does to our kids.
Most boys blame themselves for not being able to defend or protect their mums. They live with a lot of anger, and regrets, and are more likely to be abusers as well. They also get robbed of education because of getting into trouble at school, often.
Most girls normalize abuse and grow into weak women, believing they can't live without a man, hence look to men for validation and affirmation. They become too dependent and believe that on their own, they stand no chance of happiness.
I'm not being indifferent, but when we say we're staying for our kids while destroying them; is that not ignorance? We need to educate ourselves about these issues, for we have the responsibility to shape our kids' future.
Divorce may trigger an adjustment disorder, depression, and anxiety in children, but with enough help; study shows that these kids turn out just fine.
Abuse on the other hand may cause fear, and distrust which can escalate into lifelong psychological consequences that can manifest as educational difficulties, self-doubt, low self-esteem, difficulty forming and maintaining meaningful relationships, etc.
Staying in an abusive relationship is like being an addict. When you can leave, you don't want to; when you want to, you can't.
Unfortunately, we get destroyed in the process, inside and out, just like an addict.
Even if it's just a slap on the wrist, literally; it's not a mistake. LEAVE, don't downplay it.

The mom Joanna Kerns was Brillant in her part, I think all moms can relate to her. It was painful to watch this but worth it. I told my partner in life to NEVER hit , before we got married and he never did . If there had been hitting I would have left right there and then . e.s.p 100% before you have kids . 1:12:24 If you ever think that a spouse would hit you ever , I say run for the mountains and never look back .I think it’s very important to set boundaries in one’s life from the very start .

I was most impressed by the boys acting! We all are familiar with the abuse of women and children. Till today the custody goes to financially more stable parent, without thinking what is best for the children!
There are many movies about abused women , BUT this movie impressed me, because it shows also the cruelty of the parent, the mother of the abused woman. To hear your own mother saying to you: “I wish you weren’t ever born, you destroyed my life”, was another way of abuse!!! Your mother makes you responsible for her poor life, that really hurts.
I’m over 60 and I heard that from my mother every time I visited her. She is still alive, but not for me anymore. I’m tired of suffering from depression’s, just because you’re mother never loved you. Good to see that issue in an movie, so you stop asking yourself, what I did wrong, what I can do to get loved by your mother, you will never get this wanted love, to heal you have to ignore your parent.😂
