What struck me the most is how comfortable Mel is with failure. THIS is life-changing to me: that someone that successful could have screwed up so many times, and still come out on top. Amazing. Thank you a million times.

She comfortable with it as she has now moved past it. When she was going through it, she never could have talked about it like this. One take off for me is that shit will happen, mistakes will be made and you have to accept that and learn from the hard times and mistakes and really persevere. The high five yourself is a new and interesting concept to me. To supplement what she says about why it works is the idea that success breeds success. So start with small success and celebrate them, applaud yourself. String together several small successes as part of a larger success and your subconscious will respond by changing it's patterns and steering you toward more success. One big benefit of meditation and visualization, is in order to get to the point of effective visualization is, you have to clear your mind of all the crap that typically runs through it. You start with the relaxation breathing and focus on the breathing as you let all those various thoughts slip away. It may take several tries, spending 20-30 minutes of relaxation breathing to be able to clear your mind, but it will get easier and you will get to that point quicker, the more you practice it. I first did the relaxation techniques in high school for athletic competition. The counting down that she discusses here I also used while racing as a way to get me ready to "make a gear change". My point being that when you learn and employ some of these simple techniques for a specific purpose, doing small modifications using the same techniques, you will be able to adapt the benefits to other venues. eg. I learned it (being my routine) to help me in racing, Mel was using similar techniques to help with career and it can be adapted to help with relationships. Deepak Chopra also gives a lot of same information contained here, but it gets delivered a little different. I really like the way Mel explains it. Several books also explain how meditation and positive self talk work. Think and Grow Rich was the book I read in high school that introduced me to the idea and techniques of retraining the brain to help you rather than give you doubts and fears that hold you back. Anyway, hope my missive helps..

    • @larryguinee6344

I call that a step in the right direction. Applaud yourself for that first step and that will lead to the next. If a problem or task seems too big to accomplish, just break it all down into a series of steps. Take one step at a time. Each step taken makes the next step easier. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life and get overwhelmed but by listening to this and knowing that there are some simple things you can do and as silly as it seems, actually work and work very well, you have really taken a big step towards being able succeed in anything you do. Now you know. Next time you get overwhelmed, stop, relax and go back to just taking one step at a time. Remember to clear the doubt out of your mind and just focus on each step as it comes. I would love to hear about something that you have done in the past 8 months in which you employed Mel's techniques and how well it worked for you. If you had a few stumbles, no worries, each time you use what you learned you will get better at it, so don't let a few bumps derail you. Just keep going.

Okay this is the third interview I've watched with Mel, about her newest book. I can't stop watching!! Every interview blows my mind, every interview she tell different stories. I'm blown away but this lady and I can't wait to shake her hand one day! Also, I didn't realize how bad her anxiety was, the story about the AG and the speech.... that's me, or should I say that WAS me. I was afraid to talk on the phone or even deal with customer's at my previous place of employment. Now I'm doing network marketing literally something I never saw my self doing, and now I can't imagine doing anything else. I've broke out of my anxious, sad, limiting shell and I'm thriving, and I owe it all to self development and God. Now this high five habit is going to shoot me and my career into outer space!!!

I loved this interview and the fascinating back story about Mel Robbins’ career rise. I found the story of grit and resilience in her marriage to be really inspiring. Rich has such a gift for creating an environment for deep truth-telling. I’m amazed at how easy he makes it look, but to create a cone of safety for the guest and and to be that free and casual with all the studio tech going on is a clinic in documentary interviewing : ).

Mel Robbins doesn't know this but she's about to change my life. I relate to so much of her story, being riddled with anxiety, homesick as a kid to the point an emergency Dr was called in, diagnosed with GAD in my 40s, living in a constant state of anxiety, I used alcohol to mask my feelings. I could go on. Instead I'm going to embrace everything she says and do everything she does so that I can be the person I believe I'm meant to be. Thank you for your awesome and life changing podcast.

I'm 60, starting again from nothing...almost sold my Cervelo but not yet. Getting a new hip which initially I found insulting, but now I see it as "setting me up for something amazing." This episode was powerful, moving, and so meaningful for me, you know, like it was meant to happen(Kairos). Huge respect to both for going through your own challenges and helping others... showing what is possible, and showing that it is not all smooth sailing... it it so hard to support myself after I default to old patterns... I just get harder on myself... This helps to move away from that... and accept it happening also... It is so amazing what you both are creating together in this show... showing authentic selves, being open, genuine and true in the talk... showing the messy part of yourselves inspires me to look into myself and my own situation differently and to believe in how "I beams" move in life... and learn to trust that good and beautiful things are coming as soon as I am ready for that...♥🙏

I’ve listened to so many of your podcasts - all great, but this one hit home right in my heart. I’m mid-40s & needing to put my needs first and find myself. But no idea how. Now with these tools - thanks Mel and Rich, I’m feeling like it’s all do-able. 👋🏼 to you both!

43:16 I swear people admitting their failures and when they hit rock bottom is refreshing. Weird way to put it but this year I made a major change and have faced really scary times financially. It was my favorite part of the podcast. We can’t highlight reel our reality to others all the time. Thanks for this Mel! We need more honesty like this. ✋🏼🤚🏼

Regarding Mel's Painting Story, I have a somewhat similar story. When I was little, living in a suburb about 25 min from the local city's downtown area, my family would drive down one of the main highways and, off in the distance, I would see a tall building; the tallest building downtown at the time, at least from my perspective/direction. I was 7ish years old and always fascinated with that building. I recall thinking to myself that I'm going to be there someday; no specific reason in mind as to why, how, or what for. For years afterwards when I would go to bed and, before falling asleep, I would imagine that I lived there, worked there, everything was there. And it was connected to all other tall buildings downtown via cross-bridges.
Growing into adulthood, the fantasy and thought escaped me, though I maintained an appreciation for the building when I would go, and eventually lived, downtown. I never knew what the building was actually for, or what the inhabiting residents were, or did. I slowly inched towards a degree in environmental science, catering to my love and respect for Earth and its inhabitants, achieving that oh-so-important piece of paper at age 27. I applied and received interview offers for 3-4 environmental scientist positions at various agencies and to my surprise, on position was based at that big tall building I remembered from childhood and always liked. Lo and behold, that was the interview that offered me a position and is where I currently work today, applying what I studied in my work as a freshwater scientist mitigating pollution discharge into California's freshwater systems. It always baffles me that my passion (well, one of many) that I studied landed me in the building I dreamt about as a child. So serendipitous.
PS. Thank you, Rich, for facilitating the sharing of this incredible message. Love your podcast.
    Always listening,
    Joe

My heart breaks for this woman’s children.
If it wasn’t hard enough to have a mom who whines about how hard it is not to yell at you or abuse alcohol, or who brags about spending money that should go to a crib for you on an object to boost her ego, you then have to deal with her legions of enablers that are so happy to buy her message of easy solutions for complicated problems.
Notice how she tells her daughter, that she is the only one who can fix her problems, conveniently washing her hands of the problems she creates for her children. She even shows awareness that negative self talk come from caretakers who fall short, but who is such a caretaker, Mel?

S C - your heart is 'breaking' for yourself, IMO.
Only you can figure out why...
Clearly you have just projected some aspect of yourself onto Mel.
Too bad...but I'm sure Mel - knowing what she knows about human psychology - realizes the projection, as well.

This high five principal is interesting yet for me I came to not like high five as at my last job, my boss would want to give me a high five for the good job I was doing, yet I was way under paid. The high did not pay the rent. He appeared to think this was my reward for a department where I raised the sales weekly from 24-49%. It did not work for me and I found it demeaning. I asked him to stop. Now supporting myself by high five myself is different. I left that job because they would not giving me a living wage and I man less than 14 an hour

I started judging my physical appereance since I was a teenager so much that I discovered the wonderful technique of deciding not to watch myself in the mirror. I had realized that everytime I saw myself it would make me feel so bad that I decided not to do it anymore, so everyday I just looked at it the necessary time to comb my hair and then never again....this has stuck until now, and I am 27, trying this high 5 in the mirror is going to be something
