@8:00 you mention the decline in realized profits "bearing in mind in a bear market there are fewer profitable coins" Would it be possible to create a metric which takes into account this reduction in profitable number of coins. For example the percentage of profit realized from the profitable coins (or % of profit realized versus the potential profit that could be realized). This could then be an indicator of holder conviction/capitulation. Because they might be spending the same amount but due to price drop the absolute profit goes down.

Hi checkmate, thanks for another great instructional video. I wanna ask about the URPD graphs. I examined that at some price levels, there are still solid ampunt of coins. Some of the top-buyers are not selling, even if they bought above 50k. How was other bear markets? Were the top buyers totally eliminated at the end of bear? Or with major capitulation events, were there no top-buyers left prior to bull? When i look at the current URPD graphs, the support level around 36k is becoming higher than the top-buyer levels at 40’s and 50’s. This may be important info which shows us the big support.
Hi Berk. There is a key difference with the URPC in this correction relative to the previous one in May 2021. In May, we saw the URPD quick quickly redistribute coins from the top, down to the May-July range. In Nov-Jan correction, the redistribution has been much slower, and far fewer coins have been sold at a loss. Perhaps it signals stronger holders, but could also signal top heaviness and resistance on the way back up.
@@glassnode strong holder behaviour can be seen in some indicators as you shared in your previous lectures. As you said, supply side is much stronger than ever now. But sth-sopr consistently bounces back from 1. I’m very curious what will happen if we reach sth-cost basis around 48k. Most of people may think it’ll be like last summer and bitcoin rises back to the new ATH’s. But this time may be different. Time will tell! :)
Wouldn't you just focus more on those charts with realized loss/profits to get a better sense of the market direction or sentiment particularly for strong community blockchain like btc?
It is tracked on a per UTXO basis. Each UTXO is assigned a realized price (when the UTXO is created) and the Profit/Loss calculated vs the price when the UTXO is spent. There is no need for LIFO/FIFO in this case.
Hello Checkmate, thanks for your always amazing explanations. Just one thing is not clear to me: How come there were almost 250bn unrealised losses during the ATH in Nov-21 (at around $67k)? How can anybody be at a loss during an all time high (ATH)? You are really a great teacher and thank you for these super weekly and 101 series!
Hi xyz, we cannot see the metric or value you are mentioning. You are correct, at ATH there should and would be no unrealized, nor realized loss by definition. Can you please indicate the specific metric you are referring to so we can evaluate properly?
My issue with this is i don't think there's any way to know how many people forgot their keys. If there's correlation there's correlation but you can't say that these addresses are in profit because it is probably a mathematical impossibility that not a single person lost their keys. You can say there's a correlation with the data but you can't give it the fundamental reason of "investors were in profit" without any connotation. Still liked the video and data though, thanks.
Connotation example: "We can't say that every investor was in profit here, but we can, in combination with the chart history, see that it is likely that X amount of addresses were in X amount of profit"
These metrics are only for spent coins. If an investor lost their keys, it will never show up in these metrics as it cannot be spent, thus never realizes a profit, or loss.
@@glassnode I'm not sure how it classifies as "spent coins" but I'm very confident this data is not showing the whole picture. I think it's fair to say that it probably shows a significant enough part of the picture to show correlation, I'm just saying from a technical perspective. I'm just splitting hairs.
This is great analysis but these videos are kind of a lagging data. Would have been great to see this 3 months ago but instead the narrative of "BTC long term Holding" was pushed by glassnode. How is it that we have an oversupply if the long term holding is at it's highest peak.

For realized profit/loss, how is the cost of the exact coin being measured ? Last in, first out? First in first out? Average price of the wallet?
