My wife of 49 years passed away from lung cancer. Two years ago. I play this song every night. Brings tears to my eyes but makes me feel better afterwards.
My mother passed away from aggressive cancer this past year. I thank God for giving me the strength to get through it without her. I was very close to her, and as a teenager I haven't been more than 1 week at a time from her. He has been so gracious to me, for I had turned and forgot about Him. But He showed mercy and called me back, and now I am at peace & stronger in faith than ever 🔥 #kidneycancerawarness🧡🖤
Retired US Army Sergeant...Stood on the battlefields of Iraq in 06 and all of 07. Saw some friends die. Never had this kind of family. Wish I had. But I see here the love and good spirit...a snapshot of good things to come...The circle will indeed be unbroken...The Lord, Our God will see to it...Hoooaaaahhh!!! Old Guard...
Retired Army as well. Afghanistan '09, and an atheist, but I grew up on this music and I still love the soulful nature of it. Something about it just makes the hair stand on end...
11Bravo says it all to me. Why is the sky blue?? Because God loves the Infantry!! What makes the green grass grow?? Blood!! Blood!! Blood!! I feel you, my brother. I hope you will give God a chance. John 3:3, Jesus said, "No man can see the Kingdom of Heaven, Lest he be born again..." The book of Romans explains how to become "Born again" Know this, the 1st birth is of the flesh (water)... the 2nd birth is spiritual. You must have this 2nd birth to go to Heaven. Soldier, follow the instructions of the Field Manual and obey your lawful order. In your heart, you know it is just, true and right. When this life is over, you will stand tall before the Man. And He will require you to account for your actions. Do not let Him down. Hope to spend eternity with you, my 11Bravo brother. Manchu, Keep Up The Fire....
When my mom passed on this was played at her funeral I remember everyone began to sing even those who had never heard it before it was a moment that brought everyone together in a time of need for everyone.. she meant the world to us.. may she smile on
Hey Tommy! My mama just passed away on 5-11-21 and I understand what you went through. This was played at my mamas funeral too. People started singing it too and honestly it broke my heart. Your mama must have been an amazing lady too.! We just have to know what special mamas we had! God bless!!
I join in condolences for everyone on this thread, this was sung at my mom‘s funeral last week. Outside, 300+ people raising voices strong. it was a moving moment of solidarity and love for a beautiful in every way, beloved matriarch. I miss her terribly.
So many legends up there... So glad to see Marty Raybon up there too. Cool story about him... I was working at an amusement park where he and his son came to visit on vacation back around 96'. I asked him if he was Marty from Shenandoah, he confirmed he was. I asked for his autograph, and he obliged, but not before asking if I knew Jesus. I did! But, that's never left my memory. I feel like in many ways I am a better man today for following Marty and his music.
My grandfather just passed away today. I'm not a religious person, nor do I wish to be, but this song has always been one of my favorites and even though I can't accept an afterlife as fact it feels good to entertain the thought from time to time.

Lost my Mother when I was 3 in 1965. Boo hoo...Diabetes. Oh, how she suffered. Last thing I remember is them wheeling her away into the hospital on a stretcher. My 3 year old brain didn't understand that mommy wasn't coming back. Spent the rest of my adult life trying to fill the empty void she left with alcohol. I am 55 now and the jury is still out on that one. I am saved according to John 3:3. I believe that this video is a portal to how it will be in Heaven. Christian brothers and sisters raising voices in praise and in solidarity. If I meet my mom in Heaven or if I don't, I believe that Heaven will be such a place as this... where there is peace and love and brotherhood and sisterhood. I for one, can not wait for that day when I'll Fly Away... Love to all of you, and to my mom... and to Uncle Don and Aunt Dotty...woot...Ol Sarge...
What a beautiful statement! Thank you for that. I am not a believer, but I value greatly the power of your faith for you. And may I say that your words are creating a little bit of heaven right here on Earth, right now, for everyone who reads them.
I lost my grandmother to health problems and double pneumonia on top of that and I sang this song for her after the funeral service and I cried at the end of the song because she was my best friend when I would visit her and my grandpa
+Timothy Longworth +Imbusy as long as you have breath there is time to accept Jesus as your Savior. Jesus stands at the door of your heart. Open up and let Him in.
I'm an atheist (don't try to convert me, I'm perfect where I am). We used to sing this song at the beginning of the gatherings at my Grandma's hippy community. Most of them are either atheist or don't believe in heaven as the afterlife (Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs) but it's tradition. No song can give me a sense of community like this.
I certainly hope you have changed your mind about atheism, repented & confessed Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Do you want to lose everything, and not have any further fellowship with these wonderful people you just listened to, and most of all not have our God, the creator of everything, as your best friend who gave you life and all things that are good in this life and in the life to come?

What a lovely song Marty singing at 1.51 has a class voice and also the man singing at 2.30 is class to. I have never seen musicians so well dressed.Such a great song.
Buried my Mother today, it was a cold and cloudy day and I followed close behind that hearse. I’m alone at my parents home now. It used to feel full of love and like home. Now it feels so lonesome without my Mother’s presence. I’m so heartbroken. Cancer is a terrible disease.

well as the other gentleman said,, Nitty Gritty DB didn't write this song. but they ,a always do an amazing job. what a great song and wonderful cast to perform it.
Looks like it was written in 1907 as a hymn and adapted with different lyrics on 1935 by the Carter Family more as a funeral song. The 1971 version by NGDB uses the Carter Family lyrics. It's still one of the greatest albums ever recorded. With Mother Maybelle Carter and Roy Acuff front and center it helped revive traditional country music.

Played at my Grandma's funeral 22 years ago. Even though I'm an atheist I still can't get away from this song. Makes me emotional every time.

I hear that. I'm totally agnostic and think Abrahamic religions are bullshit but absolutely love this track.

+Screamer 89 This song inspired the bioshock song. Lord is omitted in the bio shock version for better story continuity.
😭I almost cried when I closed the game is when I played in the "favela" phase with that wonderful solo Elizabeth miss😭
Almost.
Crying now
I was standing by my window
On one cold and cloudy day
When I saw that hearse come rolling
For to carry my mother away
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
I said to that undertaker
Undertaker please drive slow
For this lady you are carrying
Lord, I hate to see her go
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
Oh, I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow
When they laid her in the grave
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
I went back home, my home was lonesome
Missed my mother, she was gone
All of my brothers, sisters crying
What a home so sad and lone
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
We sang the songs of childhood
Hymns of faith that made us strong
Ones that Mother Maybelle taught us
Hear the angels sing along
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

Amen to that Donna! I've heard this song for as long as I can remember (seems like at least 50 years). And, the older I get the better it sounds!

Beautiful song all ways loved it
Can't find my comment, if I ever made one. I'm a video game enthusiast. Hence why I found this song. Lost both of my grandmother and my father fairly close to each other in 2019. Now, I'm a staunch pagan, but I have to tip my hat to an American ensemble who can see that death isn't the end. Things will continue. A wise man said, a man is not truly dead while their name is still spoken.
