Setting up a SHARI Allstar Node from Scratch | Installing HamVOIP Allstar

  • Today I install a fresh, new version of HamVOIP onto a microSD card for my SHARI Allstar Node. I was using this node on my trip to Dayton Hamvention this year, and it died on me. Turns out, it was a bad microSD card, so today I replaced the card, reimage it and install HamVOIP from scratch.

    I am starting to learn about All Star Link and want to put a node on the air, The information you provide is valuable. You go at 90 mph and my speed is about 55, so I have to watch and rewatch (sometimes more than twice) to comprehend. I have a lot to learn. Thank you for presenting this topic. 🙂

    Good stuff. Working through troubleshooting is always part of radios on networks. Glad you got it going and are all connected over the cloud hub.

    Jason, the ClearNode is, hands down, the best All-Star node out there. I have Peter Kendall's node, but the ClearNode is brilliant.

    Reverse burst basically eliminates the squelch tail at the end of a transmission

    I set up a second node yesterday. It's a little odd that PreEmphasis is enabled in the simple-usb-tune-menu but then in the SA818_prog it's selected as "Enabled:n" . I wasn't able to set CTSS tone as either transmit or receive. They both had to be set to use, or else not at all. But the Rx works on a radio with or without the tone programmed into it. This is a great video, thanks.

    Hello Jason, I watch all your videos. Question I am trying to configure the wifi as a portable but unable to connect to my phone hotspot. I do have DMR as a portable an it does work well, just the all-star doesn't. I have config several times item #7 for wifi to link with phone hotspot with negative results. I know it is something simple but haven't figured it out yet. Do you have a video on config wifi on the raspberry -pi to SA818. Thank you

    I may have to get some hardware and try this myself. What’s a good recommendation on a set up or installing All-Star onto?

    Just got mine. I’m so lost with configuring. I don’t know how to get an ip for it and the .dat file for the software that runs the “SSH” doesn’t work. I emailed them but no reply still. Maybe it’s just an expensive paperweight…

    Thanks Jason. I’ve watched your Allstar videos for years and kept thinking I need to try this. A few days ago I dove in. Great system & people. So much easier than DMR & DStar. Hope to have my mobile node setup in a few weeks. Catch you on Allstar, de KK4LBJ.

    What’s your opinion about the temperature of the SHARI about high operating temperatures, especially when repeating an active repeater in a vehicle or at home. Are high temperatures a concern? They have a fan option, which looks kind of ugly with a big fan on top of the SHARI. How is the audio quality in both directions? Anything else to be concerned about? Such as anything marginal or flaky about the SHARI? From your video, it seems like the SHARI is a good choice for an Allstar hotspot.

      @HamRadio2  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need to watch it - but mine tends to run hot and I haven't had any issues with it. There is a fan that comes with this case, I believe. I wouldn't leave it out in the truck during the summer, but the rest of the time, I don't worry about it.

      @@HamRadio2 Is AllStar impacted when your public IP address changes? Does that require reconfiguration, and a waiting time for a master database for the AllStar nodes to be updated? Or, do changes in your public IP address not effect the AllStar system?
      An example of this problem is when I set up an XLX multimode DMR and YSF Reflector on my residential Internet service. My residential Internet service has dynamic public IP addresses. That means that your public IP address can periodically change. It's possible to get a static public IP address that does not change, but to do that, you have to switch from residential Internet service to business Internet service, from the same Internet provider, for probably more money. When my residential Internet provider changed my public IP address, this broke the configuration of the XLX Reflector. I had to wait for the XLX Reflector to "call home", to report the new public IP address. I had to wait for a couple of days for the master database for XLX Reflectors to get updated with the new public IP address. I then had to wait for SharkRF to get the updated master database information about the XLX Reflectors to update their system. Then my OpenSpot4 Pro could know the new public IP address that was associated with my XLX Reflector, then I could connect to the XLX Reflector with the OpenSpot4 Pro. I also had to update my DNS record in Godaddy and wait for the DNS record to be propagated across the Internet, which can take up to about a day. The solution to this problem was to move the XLX multimode DMR and YSF Reflector to a Debian computer in the Linode Cloud, running as a virtual computer, which has a static publci IP address, that does not change.
      Reverse burst is an old Motorola technology that is a few decades old, before your time in ham radio. The old way to sending and receiving sub audible PL tones was to use mechanical reeds. A mechanical transmit reed would send the sub audible tone and would be decoded by a receiving reed. When the transmission ended, the receiving reed would not stop vibrating immediately, it continued to vibrate for a couple seconds till the receiving reed lost enough momentum, and stopped vibrating. This caused a noisy squelch tail. To solve this problem, the transmitter continues to transmit about one second after the user stops transmitting. During that time period, the phase of the sub audible PL tone is changed to cause the receiving reed to stop vibrating very quickly. This makes the squelch tail much quieter. Decades ago, I experimented with a bit different technology that worked with both mechanical receiving reeds and modern sub audible tone decoders. The transmitter keeps transmitting about one second after you unkey your microphone. Then the sub audible tone is silenced for the one second hang time. This caused the squelch tail to be quieter for both the mechanical reed decoder and the modern electronic sub audible tone decoder. The reason that you don't know about reverse burst, is a generation problem. It's just like younger people today do not know the difference between "batch" computing, and "interactive" computing. Batch computing dates back to the old computer punch cards, but batch computing can still be done today with the modern computers, not using computer punch cards, but lowering the priority of the "batch" jobs so that the "interactive" users on a server aren't slowed down by reports running in "batch" processing.
