    Yk what I love of the materialisation at 1:12 just as the tardis disappears you can just notice the snow that was on it, blow away in the wind and that’s what I loved

  • @friendlyotaku9525
    @friendlyotaku9525 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

    I won't lie, I was a bit disappointed to see that the lamp no longer flashes again, we were making such good progress during Jodie's era... weirdly in Destination: Skaro when the TARDIS is flying towards Skaro you can see the lamp flashing there. The box still looks absolutely gorgeous though, I'm so glad 13's TARDIS exterior is being kept, best one by far imo!

    • @DoctorVision
      @DoctorVision  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Yes, it's a shame the effect isn't remaining consistent. It does make me wonder whether that VFX company responsible keeps changing, as the same one was used throughout the RTD1 era (The Mill) and partway through Matt Smith's era, hence why the effect didn't change much. Hopefully it will stablise though and the flashing lamp will return. I do like 13's exterior, though I'll always have a soft spot for 9 & 10's due to nostalgia. 11 & 12's I liked but I felt especially in Capaldi's era it looked too much like a toy/prop, especially in shots on location.

    • @friendlyotaku9525
      @friendlyotaku9525 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@DoctorVision I had a look into it and what I found out is rather surprising: The Star Beast's VFX were done by Untold Studios whereas Wild Blue Yonder's VFX were done by Realtime Visualization and The Giggle and The Church on Ruby Road's VFX were done by Automatik VFX with the latter also having Additional VFX by Egg VFX and BBC Wales Graphics. I'm unsure who did VFX for Destination: Skaro however but it does seem a little bit all over the place in just 4 episodes whereas Jodie's era largely had one main VFX studio and that was DNEG with additional VFX by Ben Pickles (aka John Smith VFX), Zodiak VFX and of course, BBC Wales Graphics
      and yeah, I hope so too, I'd like the effect to go back to being more consistent with the flashing lamp. And I agree, Capaldi's TARDIS exterior could look really good in certain scenes but in other scenes it could look a bit plastic-y, like a toy as you said!

  • @SamuelBrownFilms
    @SamuelBrownFilms 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

    What I will say is that the shots in Wild Blue Yonder and The Church on Ruby Road are very impressive for these sort of over the shoulder shots where characters appear over the dematerialisation.

    Hooray! Another TARDIS materialisation video, what an honour. It is a shame how the effects sort of get worse as it goes on, I thought in the latest episode, no snow falling off, they managed that in Series 1! But I suppose the production crew no longer tend to think of the materialisation as a crucial exciting effect except for particular occasions. Quite remarkable number 14 was able to get through 10 in only three episodes. Thanks!

  • @Mxtt_Hxll
    @Mxtt_Hxll 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    At least there is a *new-ish* effect in some of the materialisations from the 60th and Ruby Road. I like that it’s been changed up at least a little bit.

  • @scarpergirl
    @scarpergirl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    Series 1 still has the best 'general' materialisation effect, where there's a subtle effect that must have been painstaking to achieve - if you look through you can see through one side of the TARDIS box to the other side as it materialises, It's something they stopped doing because I guess it was too much effort and not many people noticed, but it really is a '3D' materialisation effect rather than a two dimensional image being faded up. Like at 1.46 you can briefly see through to the right hand side of the box before it fully materialises, and at 1.57 you can even see the blue floor of the TARDIS box briefly before it totally vanishes. It also happens at 11.55 where you can see the left and back of the box subtly.

    • @DoctorVision
      @DoctorVision  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yes, I also like what they did in Series 4 by having the shape form before the box materialised and vice versa when it de-materialised.

    Great compilation! As someone with a love of special effects, I were going to do a TARDIS materialisation myself, here's a few ideas I might try…
    • The light at the top would be revealed first before anything else and would stay mostly visible throughout even when the rest of the TARDIS is fading out.
    • On the 'empty plate' shot (with no TARDIS), I would shine flashing light(s) onto the environment, timed to match the TARDIS light, to ensure the scene starts lighting up even before the TARDIS appears. Timing flashing lights from two different plates is a very powerful tool in SFX compsiting.
    • Also on the 'empty plate' with no TARDIS, I'd be sure to point a bright spotlight at where the base of the TARDIS will be, to indicate energy where it meets the ground. I'd try using a shaped gobo projection to get a nice 'square' light on the ground.
    • I'd shoot a plate of the TARDIS in front of a green screen, in the darkness, with most of the lighting flagged off except a blueish hand-held light that I would point at the TARDIS while walking around it (probably at a low angle). This creates a sense of movement and eerie lighting during the transition. The materialisation would start mostly with this plate, fading more into the natural lighting towards the end.
    • Instead of using a straight fade, I would fade the TARDIS in using subtle upward (or downward) waves that start quickly and deccelerate, looking like ripples "flooding" the TARDIS.
    • I wouldn't hold back with blowing stuff with fans. Debris and hair blowing is awesome.
    • I'd shoot plates where I gently blow debris away from the TARDIS with a fan - one plate for each of the four sides of the TARDIS. I'd composit it so it looked like debris was blowing outwards in all four directions. This would be most effective with a more overhead shot.
    • In the edit, I might take the clean plate of the TARDIS and shrink it inwards slightly then animate it subtly 'expanding' into position (deccelerating movement) with a distortion effect. I would also do the same with the clean background, shrinking that down and distorting it outwards. The effect would be like the TARDIS was distorting space as it appeared. I'd try overlaying multiple layers of this during the materialisation.
    • Budget permitting, I'd also try covering the TARDIS in black and putting thin white tape round all the edges (and around the windows), then lighting this with a small moving spotlight. I would edit multiple layers/takes of this into the final shot, adding a glow. I think this could look WAY cool, give us a vibrant shining 'outline' of the TARDIS before it's fully appeared.
    Obviously, in the edit, I would try different combinations of all the above to try and find the best overall effect. Some of these effects may look really effective if only used REALLY subtly. Experimentation is important! :-)

    Lovely update - nice one DoctorVision - thanks for still inking my classics at the end🙂btw - the recent Christmas special had the de-materialisaion sound condensed at the end instead of the continued gradual fade out during this episode. I thought that this was because this Tardis is technically a copy of the original that the 14th Doctor went off with. However, after re-watching The Giggle, the 15th Doctors Tardis had the usual fade out. (I know I shouldn't be bothered by such things).

    • @DoctorVision
      @DoctorVision  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Can't say I noticed myself. Though I am relieved that no one has pointed out that I haven't included the Isaac Newton one as it was the TARDIS flying around not materialising/de-materialising so in my opinion it doesn't count.

    11:32 and 11:43 have got to be my favourite TARDIS moments in the entire series. The wind, the lightning effects and the gravity of the situation (it truly feels like a spaceship is taking off / landing) is what I love about these 2 scenes, not to mention the music. Series 5 was a lot like a fairytale, and I hope they return to that formula in following series 🥲

  • @Jamestopboy
    @Jamestopboy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I am going to make a controversial statement. It’s NOT the effect that looks bad, it’s that the effects are too quick.
    The classic series established its meant to be exactly *five* vwoorps before the TARDIS materialises/dematerialises. That gives time for the fade in to be gradual. Any *less* than that makes it look janky.

    • @DoctorVision
      @DoctorVision  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the problem is, the new series established a consistent effect when it returned. Sure, the light effect changed as time went on but the box always faded in or out slowly, like it did in the classic era. When later they started fiddling with the effect - fading right in and then right out again - that just didn't look right and made it look shoddy and inferior quality in comparison.

    • @Jamestopboy
      @Jamestopboy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DoctorVision Well, my point is this: go back and look at the ones where it fades right in and out. That *only* happens on landings where there's LESS than five VWOORPS. When it's a LONGER stretch of them, the fading is slower.
