The Golden Age of the Guitar in Europe

  • One of the world’s foremost experts on the 10-string guitar, Pascal Boëls offers us a cross-section of the finest music for his instrument from around Europe in the Renaissance and the Baroque.
    Composers: Various
    Artists: Pascal Boëls

    More Information: www.brilliantclassics.com/art...
He identifies this as the guitar’s ‘golden age’ - rather than the later proliferation of guitar music in pre-Romantic Europe, from Spain and Italy through Paris, London and Vienna, even as far as Moscow - because in the 16th and 17th centuries, the guitar and its plucked-string ancestors reigned supreme, whereas the later guitar music, although often of great quality, could not compete with the genius poured by the great composers of the day into the fortepiano.
Renaissance Spain in particular was a bastion of the art, where the 12-string vihuela inspired an immense corpus of great quality, often enhanced with the mystical qualities of plainchant. The musical range on Disc Two of this set is quite comprehensive: court music, fantasies, variations or glosses on secular melodies (Josquin des Prez’s Mille regretz for example) and liturgical music. As the piano did in the 19th century, the vihuela in the Renaissance served as a platform for reductions of works for larger forces, making the great polyphonic music of the time more readily accessible to the masses and to individual players.

When I listen to classical guitar or oboe or clarinet, I can't help the feeling that I've lived in those venerable times. Try as I might, I'm always drawn back to such music amidst my heart's bitter sweet melancholy. Some distant foggy memories light up my soul. Those breezy orchards, beautiful manor houses up the hills- they all come back to me. With these impressionable memories from a past life impinging my consciousness, I find it hard to mingle in the fast paced and shallow world of today. Sweet lord have mercy on me !!

488 positive people-2 negative ungrateful people; after such to wonderful work, I want with all my heart and my soul to apologize for those people who gave the thumbs down, however, we've to admit that for sure they haven't have a clue of what's "the classical's guitar cream of melodies. I do thanks so much to whoever posted this music, because I do so love it with all the passion that guitar deserves".

Muzika je najveca od svih umetnosti.Red kroz ritam i harmoniju, nasa povazanost sa kosmosom i univerzumom, smisao skriven u nama.Gitara, orkestar u minijaturi, treperenje zica i duse.Beg od haosa danasnjice i lepota koja ne bledi, kao stara otmena dama.

Grabbed my attention then I recalled the song called Flow My Tears from a music history class 7 years ago
Never may my woes be relieved
    Since pity is fled
And tears and sighs and groans my weary days, my weary days
    Of all joys have deprived

One usually associates the guitar with pop, rock and country and western music so you forget that there is a very extensive history of it in classical and pre-classical music as well.Bit like the saxophone which was invented in a classical environment but eventually found a major place in jazz and rock.

    • @eadghe
      @eadghe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, it depends. For example, these days black musicians are rather associated with rap and r'n'b.
And if people have to imagine a black dude with an e-guitar, they might remember that embarassing performance by Lil Wayne.
I think only the older ones or the ones interested are thinking about jazz and blues musicians. Say Japanese and they rather think of j-pop. Not enka and traditional music, including instruments like koto and shamisen. It's a generational thing caused by the media and a matter of education imo. There might be potential, but only if someone points them to that direction.

The vihuela was popular in that time. The guitar's ancestor had more strings. The romantic guitar had 7 strings. Now current guitars have 6, despite the fact of Narciso Yepes who introduced the 10strings guitar. And in spite of the success of the artist, the 10strings guitar didn't make it.

Extended range guitars are still around. In fact there are several types. In addition to 10 string guitars there are 11 string alto guitars where the highest pitched 6 strings are tuned a minor third above the standard guitar tuning. Also there are 7 and 8 string guitars.

Compare the piano and his ancestors (clavichord, harpsichord⋯), piano totally lost the original sounds from his ancestor. to the other side I like Scarlatti on guitar but not piano or harpsichord(even that is an original instrument of the composer).
