  • Today I’m out in the British Leyland classic car - the 1970s Triumph Toledo. This was released as 2 door and 4 door and came in 1300 and 1500 engine with drum brakes all round.

    I didn't realise that the Toledo didn't have the 'All Systems Go' warning light cluster as fitted to the Dolomite. Cracking presentation, Steph, as always.

    I recently found a photo of my dad with one of his first cars, a Triumph Toldeo, although I cannot determine the year model. The photo is quite faded but my guess is that it's yellow like yours. Sadly he passed away when I was three so I don't know anything else about his car, but it was a real treat to watch this and learn more about it! And he would never have guessed that one day his little girls would grow up and move not far away from Toldeo, Ohio! 🥰 Thank you so much for sharing! I am copying this link to save into the archive I'm making for my family's photos so future generations can enjoy researching too 💜

    I had one as a first car in 1988, 14 years old, 34,000 miles and one owner for £60! My beloved British racing green four door ‘Tornado’, knocked out its big end bearings on the motorway but with a new engine took me through my university years into my first job. Sadly it then gave its life protecting mine, after I rolled it horribly on a country lane, I still remember the aftermath of the accident, the only sound was the bird song and Duran Duran still playing on the cassette deck! I’d love to have it back now.

    Oh my word , I used to own a Triumph Toledo 1972 in Mallard Green , kept it for nearly three years , it belonged from new to my mother's uncle , I absolutely adored it , mighty special as my first car , there was a lot of Isopon holding the headlights in place , MOT, was difficult , needless to say , when it was gone , sob , I grieved, for it for years and in 1980 , I paid £150 for it , a bargain for a cat with low mileage , thank you Uncle Isacc Logan , I still have the original AA handbook that came with the car , the AA, badge went into my old red mini

    All-round visibility is the classic car's secret weapon! No need for parking sensors and cameras... on a dry day 😂

      Hahahahah. I wouldn’t reverse park the morris Minor if that visibility wasn’t there 😂. It makes me appreciate why these modern lumps need all the cameras and buzzers.

    My first car was a Toledo OAR613L which I used to travel from Essex to West London every day until somebody in a Capri decided to write it off early one morning. Lovely old car with happy memories :)

    Always loved Triumphs. Owned a Dolomite Sprint myself and have worked on many of the others. Always great to drive, comfortable with a touch of class. And superb visibility.

    Fantastic again to see a classic in daily use and by a younger owner. A daily tends to always remain a rolling restoration if only by the regular servicing, maintenance and repairs. The door mirrors can be turned and set to slight lean of head to keep off normal eyeline to stop dazzle (mostly from overbright modern lights) even for those of us who are shorter. Lovely video as always, well done and thanks.

    God these cars bring back a couple of hair raising memories. My mum had one and occasionally let me drive it just after I passed my test. I'll never forget locking all four wheels on a ripply bit of road, downhill heading toward a T junction! I floated across and luckily nothing was coming down the main road.
    The issue we had was the engines developing terminal end float. Apparently this was a thing with that engine. It would make the clutch drag and the thrust washers would eventually fall out and wreck the engine.

    In 1980 I had one with no reverse working. bought it for about 150 pounds. After 200 km it gave up and was towed to the wreck-yard. Wonderful seats in perfect condition.

    Thanks Steph. My first car (many years ago) was a dark blue '71 Toledo 1300 - very solid little car, extremely cosy and comfortable. Too heavy to be fast but it still kept up with traffic and was thoughtfully designed. Only real snag was the crazy clutch slave cylinder inside the bell housing which let me down one dark cold night, shooting clutch fluid onto the clutch disk but otherwise well thought-out. Still a better car than a lot of the cheaper moderns. A good first classic if you wait for one with minimal rust.

    i owned one of these, a 1975 Toledo in Mimosa yellow, purchased in 1978 and lasted over 12 years. covered over100K miles, went all over the country on family holidays. I serviced it myself every 6 months and never broke down in all that time. Best car i have owned. Great memories. Thank you for this video.

      They absolutely were. The 2000/2500 saloons and estates were proper executive cars aimed squarely at BMW customers.

    Very nice Triumph with a 16 valve head !
    I remember a race in my Alfa GTV 2 liter against one of these , in the 80s .
    It was a tough nut to crack , both had about 130 bhp on tap .
    I won by a noselength thanks to a slightly better weightdistribution and handling .
    Yes , a truly desirable Triumph !

    Great video as always, Steph. Wonderful to see such a neat old motor being appreciated and used. Interesting to see what was considered a good sized saloon over there. Here, that would have counted as a compact, or even sub compact.

    Great video. I had a Toledo when I was at college. It was a '72 model in dark brown and a 2 door model. It was 14 years old when I bought it with 44000 mls on the clock and I had it until it was 18 years old, when it was stolen, never to be seen again. Come rain, hail or snow she never let me down. A great little car. Love the style of your reviews, keep up the good work. I own two classics and it's great to see the younger generation taking an interest in our motoring heritage.

      Thank you for the lovely feedback Mike! I worry as somebody who isn’t young (I feel 100 some days...) that young people will forget the older cars and I love being proved wrong. I filmed with a 17 year old who owns a Herald today, gave me hope these cars will be loved for decades to come.

    Lovely wee video, thank you. Over the years I’ve owned a string of triumphs, loved them, but never a Toledo! They are indeed rare, the two door especially, they were also rot boxes, even from a seventies stand point! If the bonnet has gone like that, go over the entire front end, these were a car that when it started to rust, it didn’t stop! We would regularly have to supply both wings, front panel and scuttle as well as bonnet for the Toledo/dolomite range! Keep producing these, I love it when youngsters take an interest in my era of car, keep up the good work, and thank your friend for perseverance with the wee Triumph. Brilliant!

      Andrea that’s so much for the lovely comment! Aaron’s dad is a mechanic and I believe they’re stripping it right back and sorting it all out. He’s been using it as a daily car, so it’s nice to get it reviewed before it gets all shiny and loses the touch points of its little life and goes back to a shiny beginning! X

    Nice video, thank you. These are great and underrated little cars. I've had a few over the years, very reliable and nippy too. I once took mine from Kent to Brittany in France for a weeks holiday. Didn't miss a beat in over 1000 miles and sat at 80mph on the motorway quite happily singing along. As has been stated previously, UK models were 1300cc, export models were 1500cc.

    My first car was a Toledo painted in Hammerite blue. Brilliant car. Lots in common with the Dolomite. Every one seems to have the bubbling above the lights. Didn't seem to get much worst in the 3 years I owned her. Sadly she headed off to the scapyard after me. Thank you for posting your videos, so many cars from my youth!

    I learned to drive in my dad's Toledo 40 years ago in Dublin. My dad and the car are no longer. The number plate (5430 ZC) has been with me in the trunk of every car I have owned since.... currently a 2019 Honda civic here in Boston. Thanks for your lovely review.

    I owned a Triumph Toledo . (I had 2 of them). Both 4 door. It was a light blue 1972 model (L reg) . It had done 13200 miles and cost £1095. It was my 2nd car . I had traded my 1970 Mini Clubman saloon in for it . A couple of years later I owned a dark maroon 1974 model. They both had silver grills .

    That brings back memories, my first car was a 1978 Triumph Dolomite 1300, a mild update to the Toledo. It was pretty dependable and fun to drive, although it was a bit noisy and twitchy at motorway speed. Fun times! Nice to see a youngster having fun with an old classic.

    My first car was a brown Triumph Toledo. The seats were leather and the dash like this one was made of wood. The steering wheel was massive and you could turn it on a sixpence. I managed to back it into a concrete post. The post broke, but there was not a scratch on the car. They were built like tanks.

      Patina is fine but there's a lot of serious rust under those little bubbly patches that are visible from the outside, as a teen in the 80's my early driving years were spent driving the rust heaps of the 70's, always wanted a Dolomite Sprint at the time

    Another great car. I had a dolomite 1500 HL. In 87. I would drive to and from college in it. I still remember the Reg FUB 512T. Long gone now.

    Yet another brilliant video Steph. My great uncle Jim in the Republic of Ireland had one and when they came over what added to it being a even cooler car was that back then rear number plates over there were black letters on a red background. Such a shame so few Toledo's are left.

    My grandad had two Toledo 1300's. An L reg and a French blue N reg. Liked the seats in these, so my first car was a 1500HL converted to full Sprint spec over two years. They rust above headlamps, rear screen lip, sills, chrome trim areas. This Toledo will look nice, but he needs to get it rust protected. Sold my Sprint a while ago, and Rimmer Bros are the specialists.
    Good to see a young lad owning one too. Bigger Dolomites had side dial knobs on either side of the column. Two speed wipers.
    I bought my Bond Bug from Emley Moor.

    That’s the first car I ever remember being in back in the mid 70’s when my gran owned a dark green 2 door. I really enjoyed that, now off to check your other vids to see if you have a Hillman Hunter, Sunbeam Stiletto!

    Toledo was Spain's capital until 1561 at the height of the Spanish inquisition. Even at that time, three cultures lived in the walled city and they were Jews, Muslims and Christians.

    I miss my old Triumph 2000. I learned to drive in one in 1989 and then later on had a couple of my own. They had a few modifications to improve the drive but were fantastic motors.

    My first car back in 1978 same colour only the two door version,a great little car(my dad always had brand new Triumphs so they were in my blood)which I sold to my mate who promptly wrote it off when he hit a wall at Colne Bridge,happy memories.

    Nice. But That first engine start was due to the stater motor solenoid sticking so it doesn’t engage to spin the flywheel. Good review. Love these cars.

    Looks like a good car there 👍I had the 1500 hl and bought the sprint alloys to go on the car back in about 1988 twin su carbs used to go out of balance a lot had the same engine as the spitfire 👍😀

    My cousin had a front wheel drive triumph of this shape think it was 1300 th CV joints were prone to failure I remember my uncle who owned a garage pointing this out on full lock when taking off think it was a knocking sound. Triumph should have been the British BMW but poor UK didn't modernise its factories US Marshal aid flowed into Germany where workers and management cooperated. UK was still paying off war dept to the US and was operating with out date equipment was changing over to metric and had us and them labour relations.

    Learned to drive in one of these! BSM had Dolomites at the time and I practised in my Dads' Toledo. Very little difference internally. Brilliant car, bit of a rust bucket though. Mine died in an accident with some proper unintended crumple zones! Everone walked away though without so much as a scratch. SUCH a shame these are rare now.

    My parents had a Toledo in the mid-1970s, and I bought a Dolomite 1500 SE when I was 22, which was essentially a Toledo continuation model with some minor changes. I loved it, but my mother wasn't so keen (I was still living with her at the time), and so I had to get rid of it after a couple of months. This brought back some memories!

      @@andyfield7397, yes, exactly! Mine was modified with a four headlamp conversion to look more like a Sprint and also had the Sprint alloy wheels, and it looked the business... I have a similar car in the cover art for my business Facebook page!

    The nearest thing I've had to a Toledo was a 1979 Dolomite 1500HL. It was Pageant mid blue with a black cloth interior. The thing that suprised me was how well it rode for a small-ish car. It was extremely comfortable with its squashy seats and soft suspension yet it handled well enough for the amount of power available.
    The engine was a Spitfire-spec twin carb job and it was adequate rather than terrifying. Overdrive would've been nice but I think that was only available on the 1850 model upwards. A great car though, probably the tidiest car I've owned being a 55,000 mile minter. Should never have parted with it and I'm thinking of getting another when funds allow.

    I've seen that car online a fair amount over the years, distinctive with the black rubber trims! My Dolly 1300's engine certainly never sounded as sweet as that Tolly... I think the 1500cc engine was export only for Toledos though.

    Aaaaaahhh - my dad had one of these - super looking car, great steering wheel - dad's had aftermarket reverse lamps under the rear cluster - hope it had that 70s car smell.
    I had a dolomite 1500 SE and a Triumph 1500 TC.
    Dad also had the citroen style front drive Triumph 1300 until the gear box fell out. Gearboxes are a problem and require regular oil changes

      Another car he had that I dont know if you have reviewed as I am new to your channel, was a 1962 Singer Gazelle - I think this was based on a Hillman Minx but slightly more refined

    The Triumph Herald replacement was the Triumph 1300 with front wheel drive in 1965. By 1970 the car was updated into two different shapes. The smaller became the Toledo with rear wheel drive, and the bigger became the 1500. In 1972 a 1850cc model was introduced called Dolomite with rear wheel drive, and in 1973 the 1500 changed from front wheel to rear wheel drive with the 1500 now with twin cam engine (1500TC). In 1976 the Dolomite was the name for all medium Triumph saloons, the 1300 replacing the Toledo and also the 1500 and 1850. The ultimate Dolomite was the Sprint introduced in 1973 that went to 115mph. By 1981 Dolomite production finished and replaced with the Honda based Acclaim.

    When I last looked on the DVLA website my Toledo, BAB 443M, was still registered, possibly on SORN.
    Damson, with a pale grey interior. Lower middle-class chic in 1975 I can tell you. If it’s still around and you have it respond to this comment .

    I remember a mate having a very brown one of them and dolly Sprint was a wicked little car up my triumph in the day which was a stag and I do miss it, it's good to see them driven as a daily not the C word car as there not driven loads

    I had a Toledo as my first car in 1979.
    Body was great, but mechanics shot.
    Big end gone.
    Should have known better brought it from a guy in a snowstorm outside wormwood scrubs.
    Loved the interor wood dash etc.

    Steph, has the owner heard of the Triumph Dolomite Club? I've noticed that he's quite local to me and I'm the club's West Yorkshire area organiser so he's more than welcome to get in touch with me. The club is a useful resource and remanufactures parts to keep these cars on the road. The club will have a stand at the NEC classic show in November. There is also a forum (I'm one of the moderators) and a Facebook page. The Toledo has a lot in common with the Dolomite and many parts are interchangeable. The wiper and headlight controls are unique to the Toledo. The 1500 Toledo was not officially sold in the UK. You should try out a Dolomite to see how it compares. Unfortunately, my own Dolomite (1850 auto) is out of action at the moment so you won't be able to try it out.

    I had one these back in the late seventies, Siena brown in colour, it looked old fashioned then but was fast! I think it might have had 16 valve engine, learnt to drive with BSM , in a blue triumph Dolomite which I thought was the same, my Toledo had bad rust but was great to own

    K plate was the last year that they were legal but most cars by then had the new white-on-black plates.

    I was born in July 1972, and my first car when I passed my test in 1990 was my mother's old Toledo, which had been handed down to her from my grandparents, who bought it new in July 1972 - yeah, the same month and year I was born. Its reg was NNP596K, and it was an emerald green 4 door saloon with grey vinyl interior. It was 17 years old when I got it, and I was 17 at the time, so driving it to college got me some mickey taking, as other students all drove newer cars, and I had a rusty old Toledo, but it was a nice car to drive, and got me from A to B. It had all the usual rust areas on the wings and round the headlights, and the sills too were rotting on the jacking points. It also had brake problems with the front drums - yeah, front drums as you said in the video, but they used to pull to one side something chronic and they started binding too so the wheel got hot. Always something to repair on it, but ultimately it did have to be scrapped that same year after me driving it for 9 months, as it was too rusty to pass an MOT, and I was sad to see it scrapped - and that was nearly 30 years ago. To see a Toledo like mine, now at 47 years old, and still running is a treat, and the owner reminds me of me, back then, when I was his age. Will always remember my Toledo, and its sheer simplicity compared to modern cars. It always started first pull with a bit of choke, and before I owned it, when it was my mother's car, it got my parents out of the shite a few times when my father's 1978 Cortina 2.0 GL would not start due to its dire auto choke problems. It might have had dreadful bodywork issues when it was scrapped in 1990, but the engine would have lived on long after.

    The days when cars had lovely smart interiors, and not like a sea of bland plastic that you finnd inside today's euro boxes on wheels. Even the Triumph Herald had a wood dash board back then.

    Learnt to drive in a new Toledo, lesson cost £1-50 for fourty five mins !
    It broke down on the day of my test so driving school substituted it with the bosses dolly sprint !
    Needless to say I failed !
