I am an old bloke, took up birding and birding photography, I have struggled to find an explanation for how to start with LR, a behemoth. Your video is the FIRST I can understand well. Thank you!!! I am so grateful. Superb delivery. John UK

I run a small business and the world of photography is relatively new to me. I've taught for highschool for 4 years prior. I cannot express how much I appreciate the solid teaching here. The succinctness, the clarity, the simplicity. You are making so many people's lives easier and telling them what is important to know at a beginner level and what isn't. That insight in itself is gold. I hope this video and channel blows up in subscribers because this is a really valuable channel.

I'm new to both Lightroom and Lightroom Classic so I'd like to think I'm unbiased. And I have to say, Lightroom is by far the better software in my opinion, which in a sense in unsurprising given it's new code. It runs circles around Classic on my machine, is more intuitive, has great community features, cloud backup, a cleaner interface and of course syncs across my Mac, iPad and iPhone. Yes, it misses out on a large percentage of plugins and doesn't have the absolute finite cataloguing controls of Classic, but for all but the most demanding users I reckon it's plenty enough.
With respect to those who have used Classic for many years, and I think you alluded to this at the very beginning of the video, it is difficult to move from one software you've used for a long time onto another. But I don't believe Adobe is marketing Lightroom as a 'switcher' product; rather they're getting new users like myself to invest in the new app rather than the legacy of Classic, which in this day and age has less of a future given it's old platform.

Hi I've been using Photoshop for more than 20yrs, but have only just dived into Lightroom and your video above is a great starting point .... thank you. I take 1000's of images each week so cataloguing is extremely important to me, but I am also interested in setting up presets for straightening and cropping for batch exports, if you could provide a link for anything you have done on this ... it would be much appreciated. Cheers Paul

Very good video. I just want to clarify that Photoshop is Non-destructive too. When you import a file into photoshop, it makes a copy which you can edit and either save a PSD edit or a separate file of that picture. It's only destructive if you overwrite the original file when saving. And that is no different that exporting files on top of previously saved files in Lightroom. Lightroom saves edits in to EXIF data just as Photoshop saves edits into PSD data which will affect the photos that are either embedded or linked to that PSD doc. So it's really the same thing.

Thank you so much for the video. Great tips! I had been using lightroom for a while but it was a pirated format. A friend downloaded on my laptop. I was great at using it for a while. Super-organized!
Then, this year I started the paying version. Lightroom Classic. It feels different from the way I use before. Your video was really helpful. I love the tip on using P and the pressing 5 for the 5 star and also the ability to smart collections.
One quick question. In the beginning you said that we should create the file first in the computer? Before, I use to enter my SD card and then upload and create a file name in lightroom. Not in the computer. Am I understanding correct? The being organized part in lightroom is really important to me. This way when I want to go back and look and resend, it's easy. And because in general I am a person that likes everything in it's place. Right now my photos all a mess jumbled in previous import. There is no order. I'd show you a screenshot, but I don't see a way to add photos. I have 457 photos in previous import and 910 in all photos. For my filter folders its very minimally organized right now. Only 4 folders. I made then by accident because it was before I watched your video.
Any additional clarification would be incredibly appreciated :) Keep making these helpful videos, thank you!

Really appreciated this "refresher" course as I've been away from LR for a few years and had forgotten a lot of the basics. In this and at least one other of your wonderful videos, you mention that you have another video that goes into use of brushes (I think you called it something like "Getting Started with Photo Editing). Can you please share the link to that? I can't seem to find it.

One thing that's been frustrating me is after importing, Lightroom is pulling the photo automatically into my local Disk instead loading it from the destination of where it came from RAW files (basically this is duplicating the photo - the original remains in the RAW location and the newly imported one is in a seperate location) i. I assumed maybe there was auto import features but cannot get it to stop defaulting to Local Disc> Pictures>2022> whatever date . Any thoughts?

VERY NICE!!! Your explanations are very clear and precise without going over board. I'v been using LR for about 2 years and learned bits and pieces with the editing (which I had normally done in Photoshop). I have recently had problems with catalog system - various things - old files being on disc but not showing up in an already imported set of shots, odd things... I was looking for an explanation to see if I had been doing anything wrong and YOUR nice video shows I have not. So, I'm going to start from the top, create a completely new updated catalog of that 50,000 shots! LOL!!!! And make sure i know EXACTLY WHERE THAT CATALOG IS STORED!!! many thanks for this tutorial, it really was a big help and sorted out a few thing in my mind!!!!!
