LIL HARDIN (Mrs. Armstrong but more than that) Jazz History #14

  • Lil Hardin is best known as the wife and mentor of Louis Armstrong, but she was an accomplished pianist in her own right, and a female instrumentalist at a time when that was a real uphill climb. Her story is not as well known as it should be, but her place in jazz history is an important one.

    Thanks! hibbie jibbies, excellent, thank you, what a band, this the second time i seen this music video, and i said in another thread it looks older than 1960, perhaps its the costume and room decor, looks rather depression era held in a speak easy , but thats just me, and im usually wrong, but im not wrong in saying outstanding documentary on Lil Hardin

      I can't attest to the date--it's what was credited with the video. Depression era seems unlikely based on their ages. But thanks for the comment and especially for the tip!

      i thought it interesting the first i saw said it was a 1959 film, yours stated 1961, both are so close theyre irrelevant in comparison to the era i thought it filmed during, but there is no argument its great music @@chasesanborn

    Good evening ^^
    It seems that many modern musicians live in Nashville, right? (A musician's sanctuary?)
    Lil's piano is also really great, isn't it?
    $ 400 a week is as much as a Japanese day laborer working 5 days a week! (Japanese wages are cheap (; ^ ω ^))
    Isn't it amazing that women get that high wage from music at that time?
    Lil felt like a good wife for Louis, but it's a shame that she broke up, right? ..
    Thank you for the wonderful Jazz History today, too!

    This is so amazing! I never knew about Lil Hardin. But what I am dying to know/learn is what other female TRUMPET players are out there, or are part of jazz history? It seems like 97% of the trumpet world is male? Got any names we can learn about??

    • @chasesanborn
      @chasesanborn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Female instrumentalists are under-represented in early jazz history, especially on instruments that used to be considered more appropriate for one gender or the other. Upcoming videos will highlight Mary Lou Williams, Dorothy Donegan, Melba Liston and the Sweethearts of Rhythm. Other trumpet players to check out include Valaida Snow, Dolly Jones and Clora Bryant.
      Among currently active female jazz trumpet players, names that come quickly to mind include Ingrid Jensen, Nadje Noordhuis, Bria Skonberg, Christine Fawson and two of my colleagues and former students, Lina Allemano and Rebecca Hennessy. Also check out the band DIVA.
      In the classical trumpet world, Alison Balsam and Tine Thing Helseth are rightly celebrated soloists, and there are great orchestral players including the groundbreaker Marie Speziale and my friend and the past president of the International Trumpet Guild, Cathy Leach.

      @@chasesanborn Thanks so much for sharing all these names!! I had heard about Dolly Jones, and I have seen a bit about Alison Balsam. I am looking forward to checking out these others you mentioned - I am a complete beginner to trumpet, and often find as I am learning about past and present jazz trumpeters, no one ever mentions a woman's name (not that my favorites aren't male ha ha!). I just love love JAZZ and want to absorb more the more I learn! So glad I found your channel and thanks for sharing your wisdom here!
