I apologize for the re-upload if you’re seeing this video for the second time! I wasn’t happy with the upload quality/resolution yesterday. I spent all night and morning playing with different timeline & export settings - all I can say is that TH-cam compression can be very difficult to work with! Especially when it involves multiple resolutions, grain, among other things. I’m still not 100% satisfied, but I need to move on from this project. Big thank you to everyone who is returning to watch a second time. I also appreciate those who gave me feedback, constructive criticism, and solutions to my resolution problem yesterday during the initial post.
The difference between the old camera and the new in the close out segment is a lot more visible in the new upload and really highlights the look the camera has.
Don't sweat it. Reuploading to get things just right shows how much you care about your craft. Your dedication is what makes your stuff stand out. Keep pushing for that quality!
There's something extremely comforting about 2000s camcorder footage that the denuding 4k cameras can't get. It's kinda ironic that 480p offers a more realistic personal experience than crystal clear modern footage.
@@wat5133 Yes, you nailed it. The footage is sort of anonymized and just gives you enough for you to paint the world around it. I would also add that whenever you see a "travel vlog" on youtube, the agency of the person making the video always shows up and it becomes more about the end goal of the video than its subject.
A bit late as this video just appeared on my TH-cam feed via Apple TV and I have to say great job and concept. I’ve lived in Tokyo for many years and some of the footage you recorded is basically a couple of minutes walk from my apartment here. It was cool to see my neighbourhood this way and I liked the jittery zoomed in effect as it was perfect for the overall vibe of the video imo.
looks great! I feel like being a great shooter and storyteller with a deliberate limitation in tool and look can amplify or magnify the large spirit and savoir-faire of the maker. there's a hamlet quote about being bound in a nutshell and still being a king of infinite space
love the concept. im japanese and live in tokyo but personally japan looks at finest in the 80's and 90's. nostalgic vibes. i actually tried to make a video like this but couldnt convert the format correctly. so it was cool that you did it. btw, your first japan video was🔥 can imagine how long that took to edit.
Thanks so much for the support! The formats can be really tricky to convert. I have to use special software to make it a readable file on this one. That first Japan video took soooo long to edit. I wish I kept track of how many hours I spent on that. Thanks again for the love 💯 I hope to make another video of that quality again. Just need to put in the effort 🥵
I stumbled across this video yesterday right before it taken down. Glad to see it reuploaded, i lived in JP for 3 years and recently visited earlier this year. This video gives me strong feelings of comfort. This convinced me to buy a JVC camcorder as well ✨️
Haha I totally agree. I refuse to acknowledge 2007 as vintage - MAYBE 2000? But 2007 idk. The camera felt older than 2007 tbh, I was surprised when I did my research on it. Like why was I still using tapes back then? Maybe this one was out of my price range lol
Incredible work mate, You've captured how I've always pictured Japan in my mind since I was young. I will definitely look into purchasing a 2000's camcorder to do something similar and try to capture my imagination. Thank you for the incredibke video
Great work. And let's summarize what is the "2000's feeling" video quality / effects: 1. CDAF focusing technology already exists; 2. Maybe 480p to 576p resolution; 3. Since of CDAF, there's no focus-shift issue like the DSLRs; 4. Dynamic range is limited; 5. Highlight area has compression losses, but it doesn't "clipping" too much; 5. ISO noise is not visible, far better than expected, i.e. the video looks so “clean"; 6. The "vertical lines" effect at highlighted objects (e.g. lamps), because of the CCD sensors; 7. This camcorder is good, the video seems recorded in Progressive format (e.g. 480p / 576p). There's no Interlaced horizontal scanlines at all.
Great video man! It's funny you mention how you hated the shake when zooming in, but I actually love the shake. I guess it just feels natural since that's how all the footage was back then. Yes, I'm dating myself too.
I love it. Great video and cool style. I’m playing around with early 2000s cameras too, mostly the Sony F900R. It’s a beast but delivering super distinct images unlike modern cinema cameras. Next, I’m planning to grab a Panasonic DVX100 and see what it can do 😅 The modern day post-production revives these beautiful old favourites. Good times.
The watter refleection of the lights was dope! Is it legal to film other people and show them on social media like TH-cam? I'm just star making some clips and videos and always avoid filming people cuz of privacity and some law articles from my country (Spain). In my case I can film whatever I want but it's the media showing at social media channels that can be dangerous. Any explanation or tip will be healpful thanks! Nice video btw! I'm fixing a 90s camcorder from my mum, wish I can record soon :)
Love this video! Is it just me? The video has an Adam Curtis vibe to it. Is the editing process more or less the same as usual? Do you need to do anything extra in post?
So happy you enjoyed this video! I’ve never heard of Adam Curtis - I’ll have to check him out. The editing process is more or less the same, yeah. Just editing using different timeline settings, etc. It’s kind of a pain the ass to convert the camcorder files into a usable format to view on computer. Other than that, pretty straightforward!
I think one of the reasons we tend to adore 2000s analog video tape cameras than digital 4K cameras is because they gave a visual appearance of what it sees through its analog capabilities through our analog eyes.
Great vibes as always! I particularly liked the stuttering moments where you linked the video to the audio - were these in the original audio or did you customise the audio to fit in with the footage?
Liked your film a lot. I used a Sony mini dvd, with simmilar results. I have a question: what do you do with music (this and 16mm)? Do you use only free music or use copyrighted? Any advice is welcome. Thanks a lot for your job.

Have you intentionally shot in a typical amateur fashion, waving the camera around and quickly zooming in and out? The video would look even more authentic if you preserved the image rate. You claim that that camcorder shoots in 480p, and your video indeed runs at 30p. On another hand, the operating manual says it is compatible with DVD-Video format, so it should be 480i. Is the camcorder actually capable of shooting in 480p30, or you have deinterlaced it into 30p? If the latter, why? It would have more authentic "live" look in 60p. To get 60p on YT you need to upscale to at least 720 lines, which you did after you took the video down, but now you need to fix the frame rate as well :) On the positive side, the aspect ratio is correct, and there is no ghosting, things that many people get wrong with older interlaced non-square-pixel formats. When I saw ""sensory overload", I thought that you've missed an opportunity for "sensor overload" while pointing to bright lights. OTOH, there are plenty of CCD saturation trails in the video. BTW, why do you use VHS-like transitions/inserts for digital video? Liked :)
Why so critical? lol. I am impressed with your knowledge of these cameras. I’m not a professional at camcorders and don’t intend to be. I did indeed purposefully shoot in a more amateur manner to match the camcorder aesthetic. The camera records at 29.97 fps and that’s what I exported at. Idk about 480i or 480p and to be frank I don’t really care lol. It’s just a fun little toy in my perspective - nothing to take too seriously. I used VHS transitions for aesthetic…and it’s a fake Sony Handycam font, not authentic to JVC. Sorry lol
@@illkoncept I bet you take a 16-mm film camera or a still camera more seriously - is it because the diminutive size of the camcorder and the ease of use relegate it to amateur status not worthy your full consideration, or just because film is too expensive to treat it like a toy? In any case, the camcorder shoots at 29.97 fps interlaced, meaning 59.94 fields per second, which translates into 59.94 fps for progressive scan. I thought that 30p was an artistic choice, but apparently it was not. At least your NLE did not screw up the footage when converting 30i to 30p. I am not sure what the VHS aesthetic has to do with digital camera footage, especially when you mentioned yourself that the 2000s was the age of low-res digicams, not analog video. Anyway, the footage looks great, liked it.
@@TinLeadHammerI’m glad you liked it. Next time I make a camcorder video I need to consult you first lol. I didn’t know any of this. As for the VHS effects…people use film burns and transitions all the time on digital footage - it was just a stylistic choice. I didn’t intend to make this a hyperrealistic portrayal of the year 2000 or anything. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge though. How did you learn so much about these??
@@illkoncept Sadly, I know more _about_ them, than how to actually _shoot_ something that looks artful enough. I envy people who shoot cool videos without really caring :) P.S. I think that fake film burns and light leaks are also lame, but I guess I am in the minority.
@@TinLeadHammer Haha I totally get it. It bothers me when I see digital and sometimes even iPhone footage with sprocket holes, fake film damage and film burns...so I guess I can understand how you must feel about mismatched VHS textures and a digital camcorder lol. Totally. Something about today’s digital cameras almost make it feel like a rendering rather than a feeling
