Until he actually clicked on it, that little button looked more and more like a pause button. I kept hoping there was a way to pause her, so she could stay in sync with us between neglectful time jumps. And also to pause her for inappropriate reasons and see how the game felt about that. Alas, we got a much sadder but at least as interesting game.
I like how it makes you remember those tamagotchis from the past. The only one that I owned and was similar to that, was the Pocket Pikachu. I took that little device every where with me during my high school days. I think it may have died once. But after retrying again, I managed to "complete" the game. I think Pikachu just wanders away and that was the ending. I might be wrong, but I don't remember it dying after taking care of it for so long.
Don’t give it too many treats, play games with it to keep it’s weight down, or it basically develops Tamagotchi Diabetes, where it gets sick VERY easily... If a Tamagotchi gets sick four times, it dies... Don’t forget to discipline it if the alert goes off and nothing seems to be wrong with it... Also, remember to turn out the light when it goes to sleep... The life span of a well-raised Tamagotchi is about 30-35 days...

@@bignerd3783 Okay... Reading a book is just words, watching a film is just pixels of actors or an animation. Therefore you're not allowed to have emotions during these things because they're just words and pixels?
This game actually made me a bit depressed. I was really hoping there'd be at least a decently happy ending. The fact you can't control how many days you leave her for is kinda bs dou.
I feel like it's not just wasted effort for the player, but wasted effort on the part of the developer. They clearly put a lot of work into it, and on a technical level did a really good job, but seems like an enormous waste. If not for the final ending I'd think the game was made out of spite. Instead, the purpose is just to be pointless and unfufilling? Most aspects of it annoy me (at best) and I'm really kinda wasting my time talking about it - I probably shouldn't allow the developer to rob me of that time, and just kinda leave it behind as the refuse that apparently it wants to be? I don't know if I'm more annoyed by the game itself, or annoyed by how bafflingly valueless the endeavor of making it was. Just so weird.
@@VulpesVvardenfell so you watched this thing that people obviously like, and has had impacts on them, but to you it is “ pointless and unfulfilling “ and because you see it that way it is “ valueless “ ? That’s messed up dude, I think getting water from a well is pointless and unfulfilling because I have tap water, but to call a well valueless is stupid. You obviously just care about gameplay, so character based storytelling doesn’t do it for ya, that’s fine, but actively belittling something that people like with no actual thought other than “ I think the dev wanted to waste my time “ makes you look shallow and stupid.
Manly unfortunately didn't notice the date changes with each day. The first 1-2 and 2-3 have 3 or 4 days in between. 3-4 day have a month in time jump, so that is why she so angry. Apart from that, the "Martyr" ending sequence list the first day as 11/8 when every other time has been 10/8.
It would be really cool if this was made to be a real Tamogotchi, like, a messed up one where these endings are possible but you can allow it to survive as long as you care for it.
Isn't the point that the situation is unsustainable? That the character suffers from the limitations of their world and the lack of stimulus and will eventually suicide no matter what you do?
I really like This game. Tomie was really well animated. Very smooth and fluid. It was cute even though it was sad. Least it was self aware as a game. It was a really interesting ending. I miss tamagotchis
_"I did not honestly mean to do that!"_ Honestly that could have fit with every ending. You either kill her physically or emotionally turning her into your slave or an emotional wreck. The funniest part of this emotional train wreck was the Hashtag Anime scene at 12:34. I liked that the game gave you the option of being a typical anime protag. All we missed was "You baka!" and her sending a virtual punch thru the screen that would have sent you flying thru your room. Consdering the other endings, it would have been easily justified. It was a very interesting game with its own little twists on the trope. Tragic, kind of awful as these types of games all are, but well done for a a short game.
@@Shyhalu Lol but I know what he meant - even tho she fixed her shower curtain (can you imagine how much water there would have been on the floor??), he knew bc of that, he'd be heading towards a bad ending. :D
It's a shame these games never seem to give a truly good ending, even if it would involve an obscure or even game breaking method to do it. One series I remember that had that kind of thing was Analogue: A Hate Story. I wont spoil it, but the noncanon ending was actually completely happy, relatively speaking.
There is a good ending ... learn to code and fill her world with whatever you tell her to request; but then your just playing with yourself and may as well just be imagining it.
Manly you're such a sweet bean I find it so sad that you push yourself through these endings... You're doing this so other people won't have to but your reactions are so genuinely terrified... I just wanna hug you XD
I was addicted to Tamagotchi but no matter how good I took care of it, it always ends up dying, but it's cool to see different forms depending how you raised the virtual pet. You also reset and get a new egg. I guess you could say I'm addicted to those games where you raise a virtual pet. I feel so sad for this poor anime girl, but I guess the dev wanted to emphasize the player trying hard to do good but it always ends with death, that's my take on it. If you think about it it's not that far off from the official Tamagochi, where no matter how much you raise it, it will die, but you can just reset it and start again.
The game revealing Manly's information is amusing... and creepy EDIT: I severely underestimated how heartbreaking this game could be. But that ending... I am very curious
@@kanayamaryam5088 apparently, the original quote is from the movie Hairspray, but it was popularized by the drag queens Trixie Mattel and Katya in their webseries UNHhhh (amazing show, highly recommend, it's free on youtube, over 100 episodes, the older episodes are the funniest) anyway, basically what this quote is, it's a condescending way of telling someone off while giving them a shallow compliment, the same way that Manly only has the option to compliment the girl as an attempt to stop her from killing herself. Obviously it doesn't work, and she didn't win.
Man, this guy goes DARK real fast. Something about the honest straightforwardness of the writing made it feel natural, drew me in when other similar games would give me the vibe of trying too hard. I do appreciate the decompression of the final ending. It is tempting to really let the player stew in the suffering but it was actually kind of a pleasant feeling to have a calming reality check even if it empties out the experience somewhat (it's hard for me to judge what's better really). It definitely shows me that the writer has a good grasp of what they want to accomplish.

Actually since you got to the end and mentioned it Tamagotchi have gotten a little less um... morbid over time so at least as of the official app game your Tamagotchi is treated more like a person than an pet so when they get become adults instead of dying they actually move out into the community. I feel like that's a better way of handling it because the whole endless cycle of life and death stuff is kinda messed up for a toy intended for young children, I'm not surprise someone decided to create a game inspired by that honestly really depressing experience.
Is it really bad for kids to understand life's natural cycle? Maybe it's not happy but it's not like they won't learn anyway. Maybe kids toys are a way to learn about life in a less serious way.
I mean, real pets die. It’s preparation for loss. Teaching children the process of grieving will better prepare kids for the inevitability of death and make it less scary.
you can see how much time passes between each visit and it is CERTAINLY MORE THAN A DAY. it's a perfect thing to tap into; i have felt SO GUILTY for leaving my virtual pets for long. and i've felt so bad for not talking to friends for long periods (i used to have anxiety). each time, you also feel so powerless to stop your habit, so making it not a choice for the player is really effective
You know, this could be a good basis for a really interesting albiet twisted game where by end of the game, it only ends on a bad note where you get the first "key", and to get the other "keys" you have to make the main character suffer all kinds of horrible ends to finally "unlock" a good end. It would be beast of a game where you would eventually question yourself if it's all worth doing for a conclusion you don't even know exists.
I like it, it really explores how morbid these kind of games are by somewhat splicing it with a semi "dating sim" ranging from the limited span to how limited, empty, and hollow the interactions feel since it can't ever come close to actually interacting with a pet or in this case, human being.
I wanted to make a comment about how 'if you don't want to do the bad endings, then just don't' but I can't really say that when here I am, watching it, now can I?
Sorry, sorry, I got the quote wrong. It's: Me: "But first, why don't we take this someplace else." Her: "What's wrong with here?" Me: "I don't know... something about it doesn't feel right..." Her: "Well, it is a little corpse-y." DBZ Abridged Ep. 10.
@ぐ〈ツ ベーー ー ー ー ー It's a fetish. And not just Japanese are into it. Well, I dunno about a genre, but I have seen my fair share of art where women are the ones doing the beating.
Dude, we think alike, it is horrible to get the bad endings on purpose. I never did the genocide run in Undertale exactly for that reason, how could anyone kill those characters?!
I think some players project their frustrations to virtual people, and that's how they get the satisfaction of doing horrible stuff. Reminds me of some dialogue on Hotline Miami.
I hate games where you take care of someone else or help someone else. You know you have to get the ending where you treat them like ass or else you ain't getting that "feeling proud of myself because I got all the endings" moment.
Having come from the Who's Lila series, it's definitely interesting to see the parallels between the two games. I especially liked the fact that the ost of the sicamore forest is the same in both games.
There's a certain Bad Ending in Virtue's Last Reward that I can barely bring myself to complete. I've played it 4 or 5 times but it always makes me feel bad. Especially because (when you make the "right" choice) it's one of the most heartfelt parts of the game, and one of the most impactful scenes in the games I've played.
I think I know exactly which ending you are talking about. I think I purposely avoided that ending (and the others similar to it) and still got all the achievements, so would assume it is fully optional despair.
@@tomacinavetearnia8781 it is fully optional, you only need one bad end. It's just that, when the 3DS version came out I got every ending within 3 days (wanted to squeeze all the content I could out of it). Felt really bad though - felt like a lunatic for betraying that character (hint hint). Being a completionist is hard sometimes.
30:00 This creator isn’t as clever as they think they are. Of *course* we’re talking with someone - specifically, we’re talking to the person who wrote the dialogue for this character, because they’ve just decided to tear down the curtain covering the fourth wall. There have been an awful lot of games that break the fourth wall and address the player lately, but the problem is that it’s not enough for the character inside the game to address the player, or even question their motives for continually playing. Both the player and non-player are being played (manipulated) by a third actor, and that needs to be acknowledged.
I thought that's what the "daddy" thing was going for, and it was gonna be awesome, but there was no payoff unfortunately. Still decent, but it could have been so much more.
No, you aren't talking to someone..that's like listening to a voice mail and claiming you're talking to the person, it's not a conversation but an automated text message without input from you. You can talk to the girl as she responds to your choices but the message at the end is just that..a message..not a conversation thus you're literally talking to no one.
I do love the talks of 'is what we conceive just as real as anything else' type of stuff. Though discussion and dissection is much better than the game just going 'HAH this is not real, your actions, feelings and experiences mean NOTHING' which is a cope out.
"No one is talking to you right now." broke the immersion in a good perspective way of its a game and that the person isn't real, but the stories they tell are.
Anyone who is coming back after watching whos lila yes this game and whos lila are in the same universe according to it all they arent the same entity but she is definitely like lila if you havent seen the game i highly recommend watching this first then whos lila as it might give more info to certain endings and lore
@@nyankers Well, I wouldn't say ironic. The game is a more psychological horror than anything, as it plays on your will to play and questions of existence and reality. Of course, if it doesn't bother you, then it's not scary, but it's meant to play on your empathy. It was a fair warning that he was unsure if it constituted true "horror" as a game, I'm presuming.

And also to pause her for inappropriate reasons and see how the game felt about that.

"no, please, stop, cut that out I'm just after some endings" LMFAO RIP
I like how it makes you remember those tamagotchis from the past. The only one that I owned and was similar to that, was the Pocket Pikachu. I took that little device every where with me during my high school days. I think it may have died once. But after retrying again, I managed to "complete" the game. I think Pikachu just wanders away and that was the ending. I might be wrong, but I don't remember it dying after taking care of it for so long.
That Pikachu never dies, it’s behavior is just affected by how much you interact with it...
I just got a tamagotchi, do you have any advice to keep it alive?
I believe it’s a classic one if that matters.
My Tamagotchi clone was called a mymeeba
I had a tamagotchi and I remember I only had to stop playing it once the battery died since I couldn’t afford to keep getting new batteries

If there was a happy ending it wouldn't end...If she lives and is happy the game doesn't end.

You obviously just care about gameplay, so character based storytelling doesn’t do it for ya, that’s fine, but actively belittling something that people like with no actual thought other than “ I think the dev wanted to waste my time “ makes you look shallow and stupid.

_"I did not honestly mean to do that!"_
Honestly that could have fit with every ending.

It's a shame these games never seem to give a truly good ending, even if it would involve an obscure or even game breaking method to do it. One series I remember that had that kind of thing was Analogue: A Hate Story. I wont spoil it, but the noncanon ending was actually completely happy, relatively speaking.

I was addicted to those, too... I would raise several at once... The Game Boy game lets you raise up to three simultaneously...
I'd raise mine fine as well, it was only until I would go to school and my parents would look after it is when it'd die.

CrisSrn02 wow. Your teachers seemed like the worst. Good thing I had Pokemon and Neopets instead.
Teaching children the process of grieving will better prepare kids for the inevitability of death and make it less scary.
yooo manly actually mentions horror? i n t e r e s t i n g
you can see how much time passes between each visit and it is CERTAINLY MORE THAN A DAY. it's a perfect thing to tap into; i have felt SO GUILTY for leaving my virtual pets for long. and i've felt so bad for not talking to friends for long periods (i used to have anxiety). each time, you also feel so powerless to stop your habit, so making it not a choice for the player is really effective

It would be beast of a game where you would eventually question yourself if it's all worth doing for a conclusion you don't even know exists.
I know this comment is a year old but there is one!! It's a visual novel called raging loop and I personally think it's quite cool!!!

Whoosh
No, you aren't talking to someone..that's like listening to a voice mail and claiming you're talking to the person, it's not a conversation but an automated text message without input from you. You can talk to the girl as she responds to your choices but the message at the end is just that..a message..not a conversation thus you're literally talking to no one.
I do love the talks of 'is what we conceive just as real as anything else' type of stuff. Though discussion and dissection is much better than the game just going 'HAH this is not real, your actions, feelings and experiences mean NOTHING' which is a cope out.
