- The jig for bending wood which was used for 7-8 years has finally broken. It was a reuse of the old band saw blade. I think that it worked hard for a long time.
So we make a new jig. We use steel which is thicker than before for the new.
And we are bending use iron heat in this time.

I love watching the Ishitani videos. I often envy of the designs, wood, tools and processes. The only thing I have equal is the same orange phillips screw driver. I got a full set of these and the straight ones when I was stationed in Japan while serving in the Air Force at Yokota. I miss the days of going to Japan's Do It Store. Far more than the same name different chain in the U.S.

Wow ! I didn't even know it was possible to bend so much a thick piece of wood like this one
A-G not just any wood can be bent in this fashion. And you have to use properly prepared wood-moisture content and drying technique (air vs kiln). Clearly this guy has got a formula that works!

I understand if you don't want to spill all of your secrets but I have a few questions about the steaming process that you used here.
1. Are you soaking the wood in a solution or just water? And for how long?
2. Your irons are beautiful! Where are they from, they look vintage?
3. You iron/steam the wood for 30 minutes, constantly applying heat, rotating on all four sides, with the foil open on both ends. Is that correct?

Nice work. I have never seen this done by drowning the wood first and then using an iron. I have only seen the wood put into a tube and then steamed for a while. Have you tried both methods? what are the pros and cons? Which one is better? Is there a way to do it without using the foil? Just seem a bit wasteful. Or it is simply the only effective way?

Hello! I'm learnig about woodwork, but i have another question, what fluid do you use to drill the metal?
Really enjoy your craftsmanship Natsuki, but on this occasion I think building the jig vertically in a press framework allowing interchangeable forms and using a cheap 12 volt DC hydraulic pump and with a 10 tonne ram of desired stroke length would of been a more sustainable set up, and a lot safer for Chie over those cheap ratchet winches, cable and blocks.
You can't beat the power of fluid.

I worried about the anchor for the winch breaking loose. Potential for injury. I'm very curious about your steaming method. Why not use a steam-box and kettle. No ironing or foil required. Works for heavy pieces of wood very well.

I'd definitely reinforce table underneath with steel strips!

Why not use a steam box? The method with the three irons looks like a lot of work!
