When I moved here in '99 ATL, it was metro 4.5 million. Now, it is 6.5 million with the same infrastructure. And there it is. Even the back roads are usually backed up.
dallas is unacceptably bad too (and not much going on commercially) but the poor road designs AND obnoxious demented obsession w pickup trucks make it far worse than it should be!
haha, Texans love their big trucks and SUV. I lived in Houston for awhile and that's what you saw - BIG vehicles everywhere. Vs up in the northeast...everyone has a Subaru.
Just driving through Atlanta can be chaotic. During the daytime a year ago, me and my mom were traveling on I-20 from Louisiana to North Carolina and by far I'd have to say the worst part was the Altanta traffic. Now, driving through it at midnight seemed more efficient, but that's just me.

Atlanta just has a horrendous design. I live downtown and compared to European and Asian cities it’s sad how everything is so spread out. Europeans walk and take public transit everywhere while we drive everywhere.
Yeah, Europe is def set up better. From what I understand, Atlanta grew really fast after the Olympics in '96 and city planners never got the time to really think logistics through. Or maybe it's the excuse. But to be honest, so many cities have the same issues - Americans like their cars.
To be honest. I think the original city planners of Atlanta never expected it to become anywhere near as big and important as it did. They designed a small grid section at the center of town then quickly began building meandering road residential suburbs beyond that center. When the railroad boom caused Atlantas population to explode they didn’t expand the grid much. They just continued to squeeze commercial stuff onto the Peachtree corridor and a few other places and kept low density housing with non grid streets elsewhere. Opposite of how Savannah was designed with its larger grid and relatively wide boulevards. The state founders were expecting Savannah to be the largest city because of its position as a gateway port city.
Biggest problem they should require everyone to go to driving school to get a license. If you are out of state and you want a GA license you need to have attended driving school. Also if you have too many accidents or speeding tickets in 5 years you need to also attend driving school. Every 10 years everyone should attend driving school. Plp think right of way means they can take left turns against traffic now. 🤦🏽♀️
Amen!! 😂I didn't even to think about talking about how many bad drivers there are in Atlanta. I think everyone has forgotten what they learned: Right of ways, using a blinker, etc. Yes, Atlanta drivers can be aggressive and also some of the exit lanes off the freeways are very sudden, so sometimes I fear for my life getting on/off certain exit/entrance ramps!
I was moving from California to NE Florida last August. Trying to figure out my route Google kept directing me through Atlanta. A good friend who's an Atlanta native said "You want to avoid Atlanta at all cost". Ended up going south from TN all the way through Alabama top to bottom to the Florida Panhandle! Have to say, Birmingham at rush hour with a wreck on the freeway (not me) wasn't a cake walk.
Your friend was a good friend. I've had relatives try to cross through Atlanta from the north end down to the south and they got stuck in rush hour traffic and couldn't believe I would live here! haha I'm lucky I don't have to deal with a commute for work. But yes, any sort of wreck on a freeway will test your patience.
You addressed everything that bothers me about driving and living here in town. Yeah, Peachtree St definitely needs some repairs. Construction has it hard to navigate. And people will stop in the road and go into businesses!😂
Saturday may not be as bad as a workweek. Avoid it on a weekday by all means anytime after about 3:30. On a Saturday, ideally in the morning. Early afternoon might be ok. Sometimes it just depends if there’s an event going on. Traffic can sometimes be unpredictable.
As an Atlanta native who has watched MARTA"s growth over the decades, I've concluded that Marta is indeed useful and should be expanded in strategic ways, but that a larger system would not really alleviate metro-wide traffic. Basically, as true as it is that " the poor will always be among you", so it is with traffic in a very large city. No matter what you build to change it, it will still be there.
Yes i will be moving to the sandy springs GA area in Atlanta, from Augusta Ga, what's the best time to leave Augusta ga going to Atlanta ga in the morning, and is there a scenic route to get around that traffic?
Hey Valerie- sent you an email but try to hit Atlanta between 10AM-3PM..times before or after that will be heavier traffic. Can't think of any good shortcuts though to avoid I-285 unless you zig zag through a bunch of neighborhoods which might be more confusing.
Hmm....I feel you. My parents dislike coming to visit me in Atlanta (they are in SC). I think the best you can do is take I-285 West and if you don't want to deal with the exit onto I-85, you could get onto Hwy 78 west, then go up hwy 124 (through Lawrenceville) until you get up to I-85 -- it would be a little more calmer that way. I think if you tried to take too many other little side roads it would get confusing and much slower.
For passing through, the timing of it is really more important than the route, such as using the perimeter. If you're on I-20 already, go straight through on it. Just make sure to do it outside of rush hour (not between 3 & 7pm). It may sound complicated, but then advance planning can make any trip a more pleasant one.

Yes, when I have family drive through Atlanta, they always complain about the traffic. Totally get it!

What would anyone suggest, driving through at say, 3:30 pm or say, 8 pm? I'm just trying to get to Florida. God, I hate that traffic!
Ugh...are you taking I-75 South? I find that going south isn't as bad as coming back up north - that area around McDonough is always horribly slow.

I feel like some counties have had votes about Marta expansion in the past and it had gotten voted down.
