Edward the boy king would also help you understand the lineage and it's occurrences better.

      If they did meet it would have been when she was imprisoned in England, or just before her execution. I presume from the dialogue in the only scene where they'll be together ('if you kill me, you kill your sister, you kill your queen') suggests that the moment is indeed taking place either once Mary is already captured or just before her capture... so it might not be true but it isn't ridiculously unrealistic either

    “Friendship into a rivalry” umm they never met and they didn’t/ rarely communicated until Mary tried to take the English throne. The meeting is probably when Mary was imprisoned, but in reality they never met (historians made note of this from Elizabeth’s diaries). Elizabeth didn’t even want to execute her, but Mary pushed her hand when her involvement in Elizabeth’s attempted assignations were discovered. She felt that killing Mary would weaken her not to mention immoral to kill another monarch despite the fact many kings have done it before.

    • @sailorplanetos3075
      @sailorplanetos3075 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      The girls were probably encouraged to write to each other as a diplomatic tool. So, people would naturally tout a 'friendship'. At the very least, the young women knew they were cousins, and I doubt that either ever wished the other ill until lower-ranking people with ulterior motives started whispering in their ears.

    • @heinuchung8680
      @heinuchung8680 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      TVOCD very very accurate you know your history. Yes Elizabeth never wanted to do it. It always looked bad killing another monarch of equal status unless you wanted to prevent an aire or an uprising. Mary sort of killed herself though sadly.

    • @TVOCD
      @TVOCD 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah which is odd because royals killing each other was common especially in a battle

    • @sailorplanetos3075
      @sailorplanetos3075 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not really odd---the women were cousins (not that family relations alone stopped monarchs from killing each other, of course), their respective countries were not at war with each other at the time, and they had the mutual challenge of ruling as females in very patriarchal societies. Elizabeth knew that she had what was in many ways a shaky claim to the throne, as well, and was worried about setting a precedent.

    • @TVOCD
      @TVOCD 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      my point is that the precedent was already set. monarchs had killed each other before - ones that are related (which they mostly all were closely related) and at the time Scotland was afraid England's military would either invade or protestantism would as Scotland was prominently Catholic until Marie De Guise died

Seems pretty clear that the way we now conceptualize the Queen of Hearts may have been based on her. Elizabeth was famous for wearing her hair and makeup like that--it's in her portraits, especially as she aged, and the clothes we always see the Red Queen in always looked Elizabethan-era to me.

      Problem is with portraying her having a Scottish accent- Her mom was French and she was sent to live in the French court for 13 years at aged 5. She spoke French. Most of her letters were written in French so she wouldn't have had a Scottish accent. Also Mary and Elizabeth never met.

    Yes. In principle, one should be wary of films rewriting history. But there is a fine balance between that and exploiting the drama to best effect. The scene with the meeting was essential within the drama of the film. They are even aware of the criticism that it will draw by writing in a sort of meta reference when Elizabeth says something like "This meeting never happened. If you talk about it, I'll deny it and it will be treason." The staging of that scene is very theatrical with all the symbolism, but it's great.

  • @bearlincs
    @bearlincs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    I just watched the movie and found it very good and entertaining.
    It looks beautiful and dramatic with the Scottish landscapes and weather, the castles, the dark rooms lit with all the candles and lamps, the fight scenes, but particularly the way Mary and Elizabeth wear colourful(and theatrical) clothing yet the supporting cast wear dark or black ones.
    The two women in the lead roles were excellent, especially Ronan. Both played well the dual and contradictory roles of being women yet queens, people of power. The scene where Mary leaves her son James behind(and with no guarantees of the future) was very moving and affecting.
    I take the point about the historical inaccuracies of having Mary and Elizabeth meeting in person(iportrayed in a highly artistic manner), the former's accent, etc. but this is a film meant for entertainment purposes, not a scholarly documentary.

    Elizabeth I and Mary are opposite cases in female rulership. Mary followed her heart and her every personal craving. Elizabeth understand that to rule successfully, at that time, she had to make great personal sacrifices if she wanted to stabilize her position and realm. She broke the code to be a successful female monarch. Mary's character was not sufficient to reign in Scotland or England. I imagine this film will be more sympathetic but I hope they don't portray her as too much of a victim of circumstance. She was dealt a hand, played it poorly, and lost it all in the end.

    • @aroseforepona6670
      @aroseforepona6670 6 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      PREACH IT! Elizabeth had gone through the trauma of losing her mother and had watched her father, brother and sister all make mistakes by the time she ascended to the throne in her twenties. She was surrounded by enemies and knew all too well that to put one false step was to lose everything. Mary grew up in luxury in France having been crowned queen as an infant, she knew nothing of the country she was to rule, and had no political skill, foresight or common sense. She thought if she could meet Elizabeth she could charm her into naming her heir, all the while pissing her off by marrying one of Elizabeth's courtiers (AND their cousin who had a claim to the English throne himself) without her consent, and calling herself the rightful queen of England. She had no hope of a successful rule of either country. Elizabeth on the other hand was a truly remarkable woman and a wonderful queen, which does not appear to register in this film, which is infuriating given the legacy she left. It's time everyone knew what a carcrash Mary's life and reign was by comparison.

      I mean to be fair Mary had to deal with the consequences the reformation had had on her country all the while having to deal with an abusive husband who would humiliate her whenever he could. Elizabeth I made a point of never meeting Mary, Queen of Socts because she didn't want to form any emotional attachments. She knew how things might end up (unfortunately) and couldn't be clouded by feelings for Mary. That said, In Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), Elizabeth I (played by Glenda Jackson) greet Mary (played by Vanessa Redgrave) at the border between England and Scotland. The meeting is very amiable. Then Elizabeth has are arrested! I hope this version is as good as the one made back in 1971.

      While the actual history may be 'interesting' its not enough for a modern film. Mary was in prison for most of her life which would be very boring since the power she seems to have in this movie likely never existed. It seems that she was just in prison at the end of her life...which is obviouslynot the case. They should have made a movie about Mary Queen of Scots not the rivalry between her and Elizabeth. I mean, showing her days in France could be interesting but you would need two actresses since the ages are so far apart. It just isnt film material...
