The budget for the original 1951 Movie, "The Thing (from another world)" was only $40,000. in US dollars. James Arness was so embarrassed as the creature, he did not wish to attend the opening. He always said he looked like a "carrot on a stick". The main reason they changed from the shape-shifting format was the budget just did not support it. However, this early science fiction movie is still considered a real classic and remains my favourite. If you do see the original, note in the first shot when they see the UFO form in the ice from their plane, a small black item which looks like rocks. In fact that is believed to be the ice cutting machine was not removed from the original shot. I saw the original when I was in 5th grade...my dad and I were definitely scared...those early movies are still great classics!

James Arness is an evolved vegetable come from outer space. His flying saucer crashes and is frozen in ice. The Thing is retrieved and inadvertently thawed. Havoc ensues until it is killed using electricity. Even in 1951, we were thinking about the directions in which extraterrestrial life might evolve. It is a chilling scene as the men circle the ice-covered saucer to reveal its shape. We are admonished to "Watch the skies!"

I was pleased that zRoku often shows the Thing q951. Sure Thing 1988?? has more scary points than 1951 but 1951 has thatcreepy feeling you get on black & white
      Also, Mr
Dillon, the space carrot also had a good time "Them", about 1954
Forbidden Planet is the 1st really good color "Stat Trek ". Don't know much about the 2001?? Version of the Thing:

There's endless great things about this movie as far as its groundbreaking nature for horror/sci-fi, but one of the things that stands out to me is the fact that unlike so many others of the genre the scientists aren't all of the same mind. They broke down into two groups, the ones whom understood the danger and thought it needed to be destroyed regardless the loss to science and the others which were those whom wanted to preserve it, though they even differentiated from each other in that some clearly were torn on the idea while others wanted to preserve it at any and all costs. I like that small confrontation between Dr. Chapman and Carrington when it is discovered he has planted some of the seeds, you can read a lot in that moment about how angry Chapman is by what he sees as blind recklessness but he still manages to keep a cool demeanor, while Carrington shows that he's scared, deteriorating mentally and not thinking clearly even though for the most part he's been able to keep it from showing in the way he carries himself. If I were to backstory Carrington I'd make it one of his most defining characteristics in how he deals with fear, by learning as much as he can about whatever it is scaring him until he can look at it with total understanding, objectivity and make it lose its scariness, and now with the creature he's confronted with the scariest thing he's even encountered.

People need to stop saying that the "'82 remake was better". John Carpenter did not "remake" this movie. John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a more faithful interpretation of the 1938 novella "Who goes there?" Both the 1951 version and the 1982 version are based on this novella, the 1951 version merely uses the premise. In fact the only thing "remade" in John Carpenter's 1982 version is the title screen with the flaming title.

Maybe a sequel to the "51' version" is in order. They left a lot of info in that movie to extend the story to the modern day. To hell if it's not based on the original 38' novella. That story worked in 51' and the same paranoia is once again alive in our world today ! MAJESTIC 12 and "the men in black" were in existance at that time .

Every element of a great horror movie was included, to include: the post's isolation, the blustery wind howling, the makeup of the creature, the difference in thought and action of the scientists and the military members, the mind or intellect of the monster, the terrifying scenes like, for example, the opening of the greenhouse door, etc, etc.. This was the best sci-fi/horror movie ever made.

Howard Hawks and John Carpenter's versions couldn't be more different, but I believe that's the secret to making a good Thing movie. It's a stand alone story that isn't meant to be a modern franchise, it needs to be retold in different styles, different ways. The 2011 movie failed in part because it had no real identity or thought of its own, and just tried to piggyback on Carpenter's work.

    will, human relations
ect. The best version of the invasion of the body snatches was black and white ...great cast, and it worked because it was set in a small town and in the end it gave hope that we could survive the evil.
