    I had no idea MEqualizer had M/S. I was using TDR Nova with the difference being that with TDR NOVA you chose if you are processing Mid or Side per instance of the plugin, instead of per band which can be annoying (since you have to setup a second instance) but rare. Massive thumbs up for LoudMax, so simple and so useful. I often use it as a second limiter.
    An unrelated question: how do you know when you are over saturating while mastering? I'm not talking about perceivable distortion but sometimes I get the feeling that I over did it but I'm not sure. My "feeling" is that the song got compressed, but if I don't get there, I have a hard time listening to the saturation effect.

    • @visionsfromgn-z1157
      @visionsfromgn-z1157 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The question of yours is actually quite true. This is why we all should give breaks while listening to our mixes. To know if you have "over-saturated" your mixed track or not, I think constantly A-Bing the unmastered and the being mastered track would help a lot. Once you realise that you have actually made the song "bland" by over-saturating the track, that's when you go back. Just my opinion. :)

    • @sageaudio
      @sageaudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hey Synaptic Schism! I was surprised to find out that MEqualizer allowed for M/S per band as well. I knew that the output processing could be changed, but it was cool to find out that each band could have its position altered. Glad you're liking LoudMax - it's a good one!
      When it comes to saturation, sometimes it's difficult to hear. I remember in college I created a blind test for a class of mine to see if anyone could tell when more compression and mild distortion was present (saturation), and found that no one could tell on a consistent basis. That said the "feeling" that you get is very valuable since sometimes the effects of saturation are registered subconsciously and as a feeling. In other words, saturation isn't always perceived but is often felt. I hope this helps!

      @@visionsfromgn-z1157 You have a point. I often don't commit to my final mix or master on the same day. I prefer to get a good night's sleep and check it again the next day. On the other hand, I don't currently have a way of doing A/B on master vs unmastered but that is a technicality I can deal with.

    • @synapticschism
      @synapticschism 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sageaudio Are you aware of ISOL8? I have it on my monitoring mix and only use it to audition but if I'm not mistaken, it is capable of splitting the signal in multiple ways, including M/S. I haven't tried it but it could be a poor man's solution for M/S mastering needs, although a bit of a convoluted one, I admit.

    A little question perhaps: I often make classical tracks, huge orchestra and things. So I have an extremely wide range in dynamics. I often ran into issues when teying to apply dynamic equalizing: if the orchestra plays loudly and there are percussive sounds ( e.g. timpany), they would almost disappear with dynamic eq running. Now on the other side I love to apply dynamic eq when the sounds are soft, as I can make them "bloom". So what can I do to have the timpany strong, and soft sounds blooming?

    • @jurv7626

      The secret to get the "perfect" release for mixbus compression is the gain reduction meter, simply adjust the release time so that the signal just barely returns to 0 before the next transient (the meter grooves with the music giving it glue)
