    No for real that tip about transient shaping the sides and compressing the mids and sending them to a bus is crazy, I needed that. I use Reason so I had to figure out a way to do it and it slaps.

    If you need to use this kind of mastering techniques, you probably should go back to the mix.
    A simple (and good) master can be done with eq/comp/sat/limiter. Tricky stuff can bring the need of additional techniques like DS-ing, mb comp, MS processing (eq, saturation..), clipping... If your master are not good with all of this, fixing the mix is the easiest solution.
    Never saw anyone do a "mid-only heavy parrallel SSL-style compression" on a master, except for resolving mix issues.

      This comment is so underrated. Most of the time, the mix is the problem, not the master

    • @bubbagump6037
      @bubbagump6037 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just out of curiosity. What about having a perfect tracking and mixing and THEN doing fancy stuff like that?

    • @FredDeMassiveAlambic
      @FredDeMassiveAlambic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@bubbagump6037 that's what mix engineers can call "mixbus processing". Some mix engineers put advanced techniques like this on their master bus mainly for artistic purposes, but the song would still be sent to a mastering studio. If everything is absolutely perfect and these techniques bring something new on the table, the mastering engineer would only have to use few tools to make the song radio-ready.
      Some things you have to remember about mastering :
      - mastering is about having a second look on the track : a 1db eq bell and final limiting can be all the song needs, and a good mastering engineer know where not to do anything
      - mastering is also about making the song translate in different codecs : streaming, CD, vinyl, cassette... Which are technical steps that require particular knowledge, skills and gear.
      - if you produce your own songs (like 99% of people watching this video, myself included), mastering should be a very minimal step and everything should be done in the mix. Mastering should be about giving a last polish but not about resolving issues with techniques shown here. Sure, you can "mixbus process the track" to get the color you want and for artistic purposes (most of the time with eq, sat, comp), but the mastering should be really minimal.
      And if you're going for mid-only parrallel heavy SSL-style compression on your mixbus, you should probably just bring the drums 1db louder 😂

    I have to disagree about Frontier. It sounds nice, but it is definitely NOT a compressor. It's a soft-clipping limiter. Ppl in the comments: try the Kotelnikov bus compressor by TDR (the same company making Limiter6). It gets you better loudness without the same "sausage" effect that limiters can create, helping to preserve your dynamics a bit more.

    Quick question, you compressed the mids early in the chain (third) and then again at the end, yes? Any specific reason why, just to keep it subtle? Thanks for the great tips, love the parallel mid compression idea.
