Just to add my own experience, as a Malaysian who loves English language I made a practice of listening to the songs, series and movies by American people while getting my ears trained on how they pronounced things. I still have some British influences on common words since the government preferred to use them in our education system. But I’ve been told by a lot of Americans that I knew personally, my accent is very similar to theirs to the point of them wondering if I ever had upfront American experiences (either stayed there or took my degree); which is none. So I get how she may have the same accent as American does.

(Please correct me if I'm wrong!). And I rarely heard the word 'abang' is used. So is it different based on locations, or is it just pure choice?

You're not wrong because it is indeed what is commonly used, but to clarify, the term 'Kak' is a genderless term for someone older than us, whereas 'Abang' is, like in Malay, for an older male person. We use Abang in my family because my mother is from Sumatra, where the dialect is more similar to Malay. I call my husband 'Kak' because we started out as friends and it just stuck :D
