  • How to tell if you timing/ cam chain on your dirtbike is bad and what to do to prevent timing chain failure. This applies to all single cylinder bikes, but this example is for a 2010 Yamaha YZ450f

    Just bought a new OEM chain and one of those tensioners for my 03 YZ450. Should have bought a HotCams chain, but I had an Amazon gift card and they actually had OEM😂
    I just recently did the valves but she's starting to sound a bit rattly. Hopefully this takes care of the issue.

    i get some very laud backfires when trying to start the engine of my 400 Kodiak. Carb was cleaned, rebuilt, all excellent including valves adjustment. is it possible it is the timing chain tensioner ?

      I'd check to see if your timing is off before replacing the tensioner

      I've taken my stator and flywheel off sprayed with wd 40 and placed ccw pressure on part when reinstalling then I adjusted cam chain tension a little bit looser. This has made a difference for me. Rmz450 2014.

    Hi, could someone give me a hand here? Just shimmed my valves and when I pulled out my tensioner I noticed it was maxed out. Does this mean it's time for a chain replacement? Thanks.

    i have a 2018 yz250f w give or take 65 hrs on it. cam chain was replaced at 46hrs along with piston and cylinder.my cam chain tensioner sometimes sticks and doesn't want to be twisted ( trying to remove) it always pops back but the actual plunger has a bit of twisting slack in it. maybe act a 1/16 -1/8 in. of twisting play. do you recommend i replace it / go with manual tensioner?

    • @gravesdiggerxj
      @gravesdiggerxj  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      always replace the tensioner with the cam chain

    I have a 2014 yz250f. Can an old stretched timing chain make it backfire and feel like it has a 2stroke power band? It also has 201 hours on a stock timing chain but it don’t kink up or feel like it sticks at all

    • @gravesdiggerxj
      @gravesdiggerxj  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it would only change the timing a few degrees. However, if it's allowed the timing to jump a tooth: then yes it would do exactly as you describe.

    Im thinking about getting a manual tcc for my wr450 and I have a question, how do I know that I need to adjust the manual tcc after a couple of thousand miles? does it get noisy?

    • @gravesdiggerxj
      @gravesdiggerxj  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MΣNT0R™ I do it based on hours. adjust at 10-15 hours

    Will a worn cam chain start to get noisy? My engine is getting kinda loud, and I'm not sure if/when the cam chain was replaced.

    • @gravesdiggerxj
      @gravesdiggerxj  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Offroad Effex yes. You can hear the cam chain slap under heavy load.

    • @DylanBogusz

      That sounds like my issue but i only hear it during idle. What would that mean?

    • @rawdeal223
      @rawdeal223 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would mean check your tensioner if it's broken. Get a manual one and adjust if needed.

      I'm going through the same thing currently. Started my crf 450 up started nice then boom started knocking. I was noticing louder motor then usally aswell.

      rawdeal223 what would it mean if i can hear some sort of internal rattle any time the motor is running besides a hard pull?

    How can you tell if the tensioner is bad? And how can you determine if the chain needs to be replaced?

    • @gravesdiggerxj
      @gravesdiggerxj  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Desert Rider if it doesn't snap back quickly. Or if you can hear timing chain slap while riding.

    my 2011 yz450f jumps timing when the bike is really hot... I replaced the cam chain tensioner and when the bike gets hot and I try to start the bike u can hear the bike having a loud click noise and I open it up and the chain jumped timing and I was wondering if it's the cam chain.... but when the bike is cold it doesn't jump it starts and runs fine but it only does it when the bike is hot

      MotoBros FZ-R1 the cam chain and tensioner should be replaced as a pair.

    hi friend..
    when I need to change timing chain in wr250f ?

    • @gravesdiggerxj
      @gravesdiggerxj  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The service manual says, "inspect and replace as necessary." So clear as mud? I change the timing chain when I do pistons because I'm already in the motor.

    As great as the japanese are at designing bikes they cant figure out anything to do with chains or their tensioners. My honda is the same way! Installed a manual one so far so good. Theres also an "oil pump drive chain" which has tons of slack and flops around like a fish. Makes horrendous noise.

      Some people say that japanese engineers put a fish inside the engine when they close it for good luck.

    They don't "tend to fail." Maybe it's you.

    • @gravesdiggerxj

      Having repaired a few dozen at my shop I can tell you from experience they tend to fail, search a few forums and you'll find similar feedback. Every brand has it's strengths and weaknesses. Early 2000's Yamaha automatic chain tensioners are a wear item and recommended to be replaced at every top end.
