This great war symphony has recently inspired a photo/poem book entitled Camera Symphonica: Scores of Love, Uprisings and Pandemic by Jaime Diaz Martinez. One reads in the introduction "the city of Paris would become Shostakovich's Leningrad, and the invader would take shape as plague and injustice. All these events would compose the sounds, cries and emotions that would lay forth the composition of this work". Shostakovitch is truly an inspiration for all sorts of artistic creations.
Thank you for bringing such sound quality in this place

I always liked this symphony in a faster tempo, for some reason. Maybe because it *boosts* the start of the Overture Play it at 1.25x the speed to see what I mean.
I agree, at least with the first movement. It's marked "Alegretto," not "Funeral Dirge," people!!! Neemi Jarvi recorded this in 1952, and it is still my favorite version for both tempo and dynamics.
Quelle musique la musique russe elle enchante ceux qui l aime danscette musique un tourbillon d etats d ame et composer dans son monde si tragique demande une ame energique poetiqe et roanesque oui il honore la. Russie de ses creations tres actuelles appreciees
+1901Ghost I agree with you, it is amazing because it has the Russian sense of fatalism, which the Swiss psychiatrist and author Carl G. Jung considered very healthy for a people.
+Ricardo Martinez That's such an interesting fact, my dear Ricardo. It's unbelievable how good and healthy music can be. And nothing better than staying healthy by listening Russian masterpieces like this. Cheers x
This symphony was firstly played in the former Stalingrad; it was played under appalling conditions, as the city was under siege and people were starving to death. When a German general from the distance heard it, he said, "This city cannot be conquered."
It was aired in Leningrad on radio and loudspeakers throughout the city in August 9, 1942, during the siege. However, first rehearsals were earlier in 1942.
wonderful finale. semi- victorious, sounds like if the city will rise but with Stalin in front of them. I dont know how to explain but sounds great (indeed) but ambivalent (or however the word is) hope someone understand me
It's because he use major and minor modal at the same time. Similar happens in the final of Symphony 5. Under most popular opinion, that's because composer realized how monstrous Soviet system was, so even he smile, he smile through the tears. And pay attention to the beginning of Symphony 7 - it is major, but it is false joy. Scary music actually, first theme all about gigantomania of Stalin
@@alfiiamansi Shostakovich was not "smiling through the tears" over the monstrosity of Stalin's "regime". Leningrad was fighting against extinction, against the fascist dogs intent on wiping out every last man, woman, and child in Leningrad. To say that Shostakovich and the people of Leningrad feared Stalin as much as the Nazis is to not understand the scale of suffering in the least. It is frankly a disgusting thing to say and you should be ashamed of yourself for diminishing the suffering of millions of Leningraders.
@@alfiiamansi I understood that you are trying to present a symphony named after the resistance of the people of Leningrad against a genocidal foe as a criticism of the "monstrous Soviet system", which the symphony was not. You are so deep into anti-communist rhetoric it poisons your world view.
@@AC-fg4kg you understand that it's possible to have multiple meanings to a piece of art right. Shostakovich is alleged to have said "it's not just about the Germans, but about our system as well. In short, it's about all totalitarianism", though that quote is from testimony so take it with a pinch of salt.

I've listened this symphony for 2 times, and that part at least 3 times, and I still cant get enough of it! Maybe I am becoming a Shostakovich-adict :) Cheers, my friend! :)
Well, to be completly honest, I've found his complete works in boxset of 27 CDs, so, what I can say, my friend, Its a looooong road in front of me! :) But I enjoy in his music, so much! His is the greates composer od 20th century for me! :)

I can’t decide which between this and Dvorak 9 as the greatest symphonys ever. I’m going for a draw.
Nice performance btw

Kappa You're welcome.. it's the WDR Symphony Orchestra of Cologne, conducted by Rudolf Barshai.

And the movement times too! =D

Amazing !!!!
This is perhaps to symphonic music what Picasso was to pictoral art - at least symbolically and in retrospective. Complex musical magic.
33:35 is the BEST part of any piece of music in the history of mankind
change my mind
Ingenious orchestration of harps, flutter-toungued flutes and alto flute with bass clari melody.
Ausgezeichnet!! Otchen Harasho
