One of the few composers whose performance by way of historical context is actually enriched by sounds of half the audience dying of tuberculosis for the entire duration. :D

just the other day I met his son, himself a world famous symphony orchestra conductor, and grandson, quite sophisticated and gracious men. And now I'm a great admirer, The music is deep, intricate, passionate, evocative. I can't think of the word to explain: it draws me in.

He is a tragic figure, actually. His work is an endless struggle and fear of the Russian communists. His love was killed in the period of the Stalin repression. He feared but couldn't lea e his homeland.

We're human, and this brings the humanity forefront, albeit by accident. Think of when this was first played, before our fanaticism with standing in lines, there's a possibility that his audience was yakking and drinking, laughing and cheering... being so unremarkable and stoic in the face of emotion is almost anathema to me.

Shostakvich lived in constant fear of the Siberian gulags for most of his professional life from big Joe Stalin's arbitrary shadow of terror cast on artists, writers and composers.
