Former WWE Head Writer Vince Russo knew both Shane and Stephanie McMahon very well during his time with the company. In this edition of Writing with Russo, Russo talks about how Shane McMahon's plans for an AEW takeover may have begun on WrestleMania weekend. When Stephanie McMahon and Triple H proclaimed a new era for WWE and left Vince McMahon out of the equation, Russo feels, a whole sequence of events may have been set in motion. The Khans can support AEW for decades, and not lose any money because they make so much money every year. However, keep in mind that despite the ratings and ticket sales decline, AEW will still record RECORD revenue for 2024 and as long as AEW continues to make more money each and every year as they are, they aren't truly struggling. This is the same excuse WWE fans gave in 2021, and 2022 when WWE was struggling with ticket sales and yet still recorded RECORD revenue in 2021, and 2022.

Uhm.... Are you blind? If the viewership is DOWN, then YOU ARE losing money on the backend. That's what this whole podcast/clip/video is about.
You can make money from attendance, and merchandise sales, sure... but are you SELLING the brand...? Because if you SELL the brand long enough, then revenue goes up across the board.
@@CarlosXPhone The Khans' wealth did not come from the pro wrestling industry and does not even need to come from the pro wrestling industry. That's the point he's making. They are wealthy enough to afford to keep AEW going as long as they want. Some of you people talk like this was an average dude starting a pro wrestling company that was gambling on his last investment and hoping he makes it big time. The Khans can afford to do this and keep it going unless they choose to sell. The rich can only get richer in this situation. Do some research on why they are so wealthy in the first place. AEW or no AEW. The Khans been billionaires involved in other lines of work. Not everybody understands that. Pro wrestling didn't make them.
@@DeltonBain-zg4ms The way you talk, its HARD for me to respect you. Vince's "rise" in wrestling is VERY similar to Tony Khan, but the difference is, Vince had the marketing acumen. Tony doesn't know how to RUN AEW, or grow the brand, but hey... call me names.
I'm not sure the McMahons would waste their time with an AEW -- but a new company from the ground up, is within the realms of possibility.
The could call it the WWF, like the WWE, but with an F. It has a much better ring to it.

I don't think the question is would Shane buy it. The question is would Tony sell. And I think you kind of answered your own question by saying Tony would probably sink his last dollars into it. So the answer is probably not.

Bro, Bro, Bro, Tony Khan never tried to sell ROH TV to other networks. He tried to get ROH a time slot on WBD TV, and WBD declined. He then put ROH behind a paywall. He never tried to sell ROH TV to any other network outside of WBD. Also, AEW has only lost a yearly average of 98k LIVE viewers over the last 5 years. WWE has lost over a yearly average of 600k LIVE viewers since 2019, and 1.1 million since 2018 which is DRAMATICALLY worse than AEW.

Stephanie turned against vince not out of moral reasons it was abt power stephanie and hhh have always been abt power he always wanted vince spot and plays a lot of dirty politics and shane I agree did not like his father's character. Ok, we know that WBD made AEW an offer, and that they are in the negotiation process. It would be bad business on AEW's part if they just accepted the first offer that WBD gave them. It would be better from a business standpoint to continue negotiations util the exclusive negotiation window has expired and AEW is allowed to field offers from other networks. Also, with all the media connections that the Khan family has, and keep in mind Tony attends those yearly A list white parties, where all the top execs from the top entertainment companies, sports leagues, movie stars, music stars, athletes go to. Basically, the most powerful people in entertainment. I find it hard to believe that Tony wouldn't already have other options like ESPN+, FOX Sports, Paramount+, Amazon, and Apple TV. I have even heard from friends of mine who work at ESPN and FOX Sports, that there is interest in signing AEW if they decide to leave WBD. AEW out draws UFC in TV ratings and AEW's ratings aren't great but their demo is still one of the top on cable every Wednesday and Saturday night and that is what interests ESPN+ and FOX Sports. Thinking that they will land on TH-cam, is less logical. Tony wouldn't even put ROH on TH-cam and he'd get more viewers on TH-cam for ROH than he would behind a pay wall.
All tribalism aside. AEW is a great pri wrestling company. The issue of ratings has to do with yhe hardcore AEW fans will tune in every week. There's not much newer viewers because the WWE loyalists refuse to give it a chance. These same fans don't realize that AEW existing is a win for WWE. AEW forced WWE to step up its game. WWE has been garbage for a long while until AEW came along. WWE still isn't all that great now but it's not as bad. I would hate for ANY wrestling company to go under because I love wrestling.
@@rickycastillo7865 And yet they are carried by Punk on Raw, and Cody on Smackdown. Both that wouldn't be where they are without AEW. That's why the WWE didn't pick them up before. They only wanted the talent right after AEW brought them in. Even Rey Misterio was hired after being at AEW first All In.
Ummm no. EVERYONE gave AEW a fair chance at first and even a veryyyy long honey moon period. Then the casuals hauled ass because the product is trash🤷🏻♂️

. Danielson left, and the WWE marks said he's dead to them. Ricochet leaves and he's trash. Those are the marks. And you are one of them bc all you watch is the WWE even when it gets awful. If not the WWE would've improved the show a decade ago. Because the WWE marks kept supporting them. So they didn't care to change. Every time a rival comes the WWE start caring. That's why they made changes when WCW, TNA and AEW came along.

Tony needs to stop living and dying on the TV Rights deal. Take what they give you and use it as an opportunity to correct course. It sucks. But that's real business. I can't charge one customer $5000 just because they are the only customer I've had all month! I need to find more customers! Stop hoping the network is going to pay you extra to offset your losses. Without a TV deal, you're business is dead. Take your lumps and focus on doing better for next time.
