I wouldn't go so far as to say that Katniss hates her mom, but that she can't trust her. It wasn't just a depressive state where the mom went mute; she didn't get out of bed for weeks and they all almost starved to death because of it. Katniss was only 11 and had to relearn how to hunt and gather to keep the three of them alive, creating a toxic independence where Katniss feels like she can never trust anyone again, because the one person who was supposed to keep her and her sister alive couldn't do it, though through no fault of her own.
The bread thing is explained better in the book. His mother had already threatened Katniss with Peacekeepers for looking in their bins. He received a beating for.burning the bread (which he did on purpose so he could throw them out). He could go out and give them to her.
the older i get, the harder rue's death is for me. when you're a teen yourself like i was when i was first exposed to thg, you don't *really* understand just how messed up the games are. i have 12 and 18 year old cousins, the idea of sending any of them away to die like that is truly horrific, because they're all just babies
We deserve a spin-off about Haymitch!!!! His time in the arena when there was double the amount of tributes and what the capital did to him afterwards!!!!!!
Well Baby steps but fingers crossed it happens same with one about Finnick we already have one now about Coriolanus Snow which is nice cause we get to learn how this all begins with that being said those spin offs sound perfect
8:27 Based on what I've seen in other comment sections, Peeta's mom apparently abused him. Even throwing it the way he did got him a black eye, if he'd walked over and given it to Katniss normally she probably would have beaten him worse (haven't read the books myself so I can't confirm, but it's pretty sad if true)
20:45 Omg in the book those things were literally horrifying. They weren’t just dogs. They were amalgamations made from the dead tributes (or at least made to look like them). Katniss recognizes one of them being the smallest with Rue’s eyes and hair. It’s literally sickening. Some things they left out of the movies: Peeta burned the bread on purpose so that he could give it to Katniss. He had already received a beating from his mom for burning the bread so him throwing it to Katniss was not because he was being an asshole but because he was scared of getting a further beating. He was telling her in the cave that he’s sorry and basically should have took the beating to just hand it to her. Katniss’ father was said to have had the birds stop and listen every-time he sang and they do the same for Katniss. It’s one of the things Peeta likes about her. (Not really a leave out but still) Peeta blowing up was because he’s in a stressful situation and is basically accepting his own death. It’s hard for people to do, especially someone so young. But he knew he didn’t have a chance at winning and even if he did, he would have done what he could to help Katniss win. In the book, Peeta actually loses his leg from the mutt attack at the end of the games. They actually listen to Cato get eaten all night until they decide to put him out of his misery in the morning once they see that he’s still not dead. Katniss was actually rooting for Thresh to win if she didn’t. She was actually upset when he died. In the book, Cato kills him. In the movie, the mutts kill him but they later change it to line up with the book. Katniss doesn’t hate her mother, she just doesn’t trust her. After their father died her mom completely shut down and they were on the verge of starving to death. That scene with Katniss screaming at her mother and begging her to look at her before it switched to Peeta yelling at her to run is what that was. Katniss was starving and about to give up before Peeta threw her the bread. He’s the reason she found the resolve to stay alive. Katniss doesn’t trust her mother because when she needed her she almost let them all die, and her mom KNOWS that Katniss can’t forgive her for that. Hence why Katniss tells her “You can’t shut down like you did when dad died!” before she gets shipped off to the games.
I recently started reading the books, and the mutts being made from the dead tributes was actually so terrifying/sad to read, made it ten times more sad😭
Part of the reason why they DIDN'T do more was because... that's the point. The main antagonistic force in Panem is The Capital. Their "entertainment" consumes literal children, annually, and replays their graphic and horrific traumas nearly daily in between. If they had created dozens of spin-offs, even focusing on other generations in the history of Panem and the Games, it would have capitalized on trauma and abusive treatment of children and society and turned it into entertainment, a spectacle. It only works - it only maintains its poignancy and depth - because they waited until Suzanne Collins wrote the only prequel that matters: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. We don't need any more than that, because it would turn it into a circus without meaning, bread without nutrition. Panem would become real...
8:18 In the books, it is explained how Peeta burned the bread on purpose so his mother would make him throw it to the pigs and toke the opportunity to throw it at Katniss, even though Peeta's mother used hit him for burning the bread.
I've never thought of fox face eating the poisoned berry as a suicide act untill i saw a twitter thread about it recently and it makes so much sense she definelty knew they were poisoness. Also CATCHING FIRE >>>> literally any other movie ever
The game that she was playing during training was a matching game. It wasn’t picking out different types of berries, so I don’t believe it was intentional. I don’t think she actually knew what different plans were, but she was very good at memorizing & organizing and of course, sneaking around. She was very good at being invisible & she was very smart as well. I think she would have absolutely tried to last until the end, & hope that the last person she didn’t actually have to kill.
@@mistyxmarlboro thank you! I didn’t want to say but this theory drove me nuts in general because the thing she did in training had nothing to do with identifying edible plants.
watching the movies now hits so much harder than when I was a kid. I now have 10 yr old nieces that I would do absolutely anything for and imagining them being is Prim or Rues position makes it so much more heartbreaking
I think they did well with ending the series on a high note which is why fans still love it and consider it so amazing. If they were to have done spinoff films and tv series it could have run the brand into the ground to the point the name alone could be eye roll inducing today, but since they didn’t it’s still held to such high regard. Also same with JLaw, the general public turned on her but she’s always been my #1 since her debut on Winter’s Bone ❤
Lmfao stop why is no one mentioning the "Period. She's back to being hetero" bit 😂 Your delivery was so perfect, I laughed so hard and had to rewatch that whole part because it was so funny.
I understand why Katniss hates her mum. Because she went into that trauma state, she left her two children to starve. Katniss was close to death because she and prom hadn't eaten. She had to keep her family alive at 12 or something. Withe no money, no father or mother and no community support.
I thought it was odd how they used the hallucination/dream sequence to explain what happened to Katniss’ father but they made it seem like it just happened within a year of her and Peeta’s Games.
Im glad you brought up their mom. I just reread the books recently and its SUCH A SHAMEEEEEEE how they erase so much of their relationship. I cant even recall her fkn name!!!!!!!!!! Justice for mrs everdeen
I feel like the reason there isn’t a whole bunch of hunger games movies (I mean there are now 5, and that’s a lot) is because the whole point of the hunger games is that it’s cruel, unnecessary entertainment to the capitol people, who are viewed as bad for enjoying it. In this position, we are the people watching the games for entertainment and thinking they’re fun, we are the capitol. Now that’s a bit extreme, since this is fiction made to be consumed for entertainment within itself, and I would love more hunger games content. However, that would be missing the point of the story’s message
That it's actually the reason there is no more books, the author talked about that. The only book after is "The ballad of songbirds and snakes", and it's a prequel, a VERY good and necessary one. It explains a lot, and add a deep meaning in all of Snows reactions to Katniss
I discovered your videos just last week and I love you so much, your added clips and commentary are top notch and have me CRACKING UP My much needed daily laugh ❤ thank you for being you ❤❤❤
Does she not look like Belle from Beauty and the Beast in her post-game interview look? Loved your reaction to this. You remind me of Brad Evans, who I also love. Great editing and humor!
i'm always torn on whether i'm unhappy or actually glad they didn't include the part about the people in the capital eating so much food and then making themselves vomit so they could eat more. it was such an insane thing to me the first time i read it and is still stuck in my head. i miss movies like this and divergent. but oh man, those hunger games books are still so relevant today, it's wild.
I mean, there are the 3 (4, but one is a two-part one) films because there were 3 books. They're based on a book series. There's now the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes because she wrote another book. So... there's not a whole giant series, because the author hasn't written a giant series. I do recommend checking out the books, they go into a lot more detail. There is a lot more to that scene with the bread. Peeta had gotten beaten for burning the bread. He was supposed to be throwing it to the pigs. He is clearly being watched to some degree when he goes out, so throwing it towards her is the best he can do for her. There is also a strong implication that he burned the bread on purpose to be able to get it to her, even knowing he would be punished for it. It's much more complex than the movie makes it. As to where did the dystopian genre go, over here in the States we are living a dystopian genre. We don't need to see it in the movies. 😆😭
honestly I think the spin off should have been about Haymitch's backstory, 'cause I really couldn't give less of a fuck about the President Snow backstory
Peeta will forever be my love. He deserved sm better, he’s a sweetheart. His mom abused him like crazy and she SAW him throw that bread to her and beat him. If he had gone to her he’d most likely be covered in bruises, and scars.
Hungerverse would be a cool series name. I would love to see a tv series of all of these districts and where the origin came from. Obviously we know more now with ballad and songbirds, but follow different groups for each season and each district.
This was such an awesome & entertaining review! You have such an awesome personality! You definitely made my day every time I watch one of your reactions! The editing is totally on point as well! One thing that I did wanna say is that I don’t believe Fox Face ate the poison berries with the intent to off herself. The game she was playing was a matching game, & it didn’t tell you what the different plants were, so that is not a theory that I would accept easily.
I know what Coriolanus Snow is unhappy at the End and doesnt like Katniss but i dont want to spoil anything for anyone if you wanna know why hes unhappy watch The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes these films hit definitely once you watch TBOSAS

No but Jennifer Lawerence ATE THIS ROLE FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH, and DINNER!!!

In the book in her inner dialogue she starts to come to conclusions about she actually being sick and understands it better with time
I think her mother was catatonic
The bread thing is explained better in the book. His mother had already threatened Katniss with Peacekeepers for looking in their bins. He received a beating for.burning the bread (which he did on purpose so he could throw them out). He could go out and give them to her.

I think the dystopia of the real world kinda destroyed the hunger for dystopian fiction. 😅
Nah, it was the shallow, vapid failure to understand dystopia from writers in things like Divergent that destroyed the hunger for dystopian fiction.
8:18 In the books, it is explained how Peeta burned the bread on purpose so his mother would make him throw it to the pigs and toke the opportunity to throw it at Katniss, even though Peeta's mother used hit him for burning the bread.

It only works as a movie theory but otherwise she definitely didn’t do it on purpose.

The nightlock berry is most likely to grow only in the forest of district 12 that explains why even peeta doesn't know it is poisonous.
Shooting gay and then shooting straight is deffinative proof that Katniss is the Bi queen we all need 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈

But.... The scene with the dogs was SO much more terrifying in the book. Its the one place the movies failed.
