      adding on to this: in the books that this movie was based off by Cressida Cowell, Toothless was small and green. However during the early stages of development for the movie, one of the digital artists had a black panther as their desktop wallpaper which inspired the others to make Toothless look like a black panther and have cat-like qualities

      It’s moments like that we all chase in real life. When you throw away the cheat sheet, you stop thinking and just react on instinct, totally in flow. When everything finally clicks after you’ve practiced something over and over, worrying and thinking about it, and then BAM, it suddenly all makes sense. We live for those moments. Chills every time

    23:30 Cinema Therapy did a video on Hiccup and Astrid's relationship, which sort of starts here. She might not understand everything Hiccup believes or thinks of right away, but she still respects it and backs him up no matter what. And when he doesn't believe in his own ideas and abilities, she does, and then she gets him to believe in them and in himself again. Honestly, they have one of the healthiest relationships I've ever watched (whether the media is animated, "kids' movies," live-action, and everything in between.)

    This scene 6:57 with toothless having his eye open was actually a animation error! He originally was going to have his eye closed in this scene (or be open the entire time hiccup found him I truthfully can't remember) but because of this error (Thank God for it too) it made the scene 100x better and powerful so the directors kept the shot! 😊

    • @sirennarose9839
      @sirennarose9839 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +97

      ALSO at 12:16 toothless movements are based off cat movements! If I remember correctly they used the directors or one of the main animators cat as reference. And storm fly (astrids dragon) is inspired by parrot movements. They put in A LOT of thought and detail into creating these films :))

      That's not true. They decided Toothless should have his eyes open in this scene because they really emphasized the vertical pupils. Doing that made him seem more alien/other before we know him as a friend. He hasn't even been named at this point! 😊 Such a great movie!

    10:56 I know you said you didn’t wanna watch the whole show- but that’s literally what the whole show is about 😭 literally just all the dragon lore
    It’s abt the characters, while they’re kids, going out and exploring with their dragons then recording all of their findings bc the events of the first film changed everything they knew abt dragons and now they’re re-experiencing all the dragons from the book with their new knowledge abt dragons in general
    It’s a pretty cool show and it gets referenced a lot in the ‘stand-alone’ specials

    6:56 Apparently this slit-eyed stare at Hiccup and the moment Toothless hesitated to let Hiccup touch his snoot (at 13:48) were BOTH animation errors in the computer. The stare was accidental but the animators/directors decided to keep the shot the way it was because it added to Toothless' look of utter, paralyzed fear. The hesitation before the nose-touch was also a mistake, but they decided to keep it because it made Toothless seem more anthropomorphized in his thinking, since it looked like it gave him more thoughts and emotions in that pivotal moment of their relationship (ie, the beginning of their allyship that would become friendship.) Both "mistakes" gave Toothless more nuance because they lent him thoughts and feelings like a real wild animal meeting a person, which would make him more endearing as a "domesticated" character later on.

    • @aliyahpulido953
      @aliyahpulido953 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@that_one_editor1423 Haha😂 Yes, some of the greatest/most iconic moments in movies were initially a mistake or were an alternative solution to a problem. For instance, in the original Disney Snow White movie, they couldn't figure out how to make Snow White look less pale because the coloring on the cel (film) made her look washed out and "anemic." The (male) animators were worried they'd have to give up but then one of the female animators dabbed some of her rouge/blush or lipstick on the cel and it WORKED.
      In the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Star Lord dropped the sphere as he was handing it over, but that was just Chris Pratt being clumsy. They felt it added to his character so they kept it.
      In Turning Red, Mei's VA, Rosalie Chiang, was only 12 when she recorded her dialogue. For the scene where she turns into a panda at school and sees Devon while rushing home, none of her given lines were working out the way they wanted to. Someone suggested she try "AWOOGA!" but has to explain to her what it meant because she didn't understand. Of course, her catcalling someone as a line in her script made her flustered 😂 They got the perfect take in about 3 tries! And that's one of people's favorite funny moments in the whole movie.

    This movie has a lot of sentimental value to me , it came out about 3-4 months after my mom died when I was 6 years old and with hiccup not having a present mother and my love of dragons , this film soon became a comfort to tiny me. The parallel between Hiccup and Toothless is so interesting.
    Like how Toothless' missing tailwing was due to Hiccup shooting him down, it is theorised that Hiccup's leg was caught by Toothless' jaw while they were just about falling to their death. It would explain why only that leg is damaged and the rest of his body was fine if not a bit toasted.
    I love the fact that like in a real strong friendship how people can have their differences and at times even hurt each other, they become stronger by relying on each other during that hard times and build each other up.

  • @teejaykaye

    One of the things I love so much about this movie is that the trope of “parent pushing their goals and dreams onto a child” and the “hiding the pet” tropes have GENUINE STAKES. it’s not just that Stoick is trying to push his lifestyle onto Hiccup - from Stoick’s perspective, they are at war and their kids WILL DIE if they don’t prepare themselves to face the dragons. And a Night Fury is basically an apex predator Hiccup is keeping in the backyard. Most other movies where a parent is trying so hard to make their kid into their ideal version of a person it falls flat because the stakes just aren’t there, but in this movie it makes perfect sense. And once Stoick sees that Hiccup was right, they CAN live alongside the dragons, he changes his perspective and apologizes for how he acted. Can you tell I love Stoick

    ("Acrophobic" means I'm terrified of heights like skydiving, paragliding, hot air balloons, and tightropes, etc., but I'm not scared to fly in planes for some reason. Maybe it's the floor and enclosed space on a plane vs. feeling completely exposed or a possibility of falling everywhere else. )

    I'm so happy that you mentioned the music because both Hiccup and Toothless have their own recurring tune during the movie. So when we get to the flying scene, both of their music themes (or motifs) come together into one big sounding song. It's super grand and John Powell really did a great job. I will never NOT gas that man up. John Powell and Hans Zimmer (aka the man who wrote music for the Prince of Egypt, The Lion King, Interstellar, Dune, etc) actually came together and wrote the music for the Kung Fu Panda trilogies as well.
    I just thought I'd share the knowledge lmao

There is a kids tv show set in the future, but that is not that great... really focusing on the young kids audience. The main timeline tv show (Dragons:Riders of Berk, Dragons:Defenders of Berk and Draagon Race to the Edge) has 8 seasons in total and 118 eps. I mean, I know its a lot, but at least not 223 haha. I grew up on these movies and needless to say with my love of dragons and the different cultural ideas of dragons I was obsessed. Still am tbh. Nothing can really come that close in the combination of many things I greatly enjoy like dragons and animation and the music in the background and visuals that you know the animators spent forever on and the clear studies they did on how the dragons would move and function. It makes my little nerd brain so happy. Additionally it’s really good story telling and it just never fails to draw me in. It’s also really cool to see how much the animation has improved between each movie, like the glow ups are phenomenal (reminds me of the first toy story movie vs the fourth or so). Also as many have already said the series would have a lot of the stuff you wanted; more dragon types and stories and more interactions with the characters and it kind of shows how their relationships evolve. It’s really really good I do highly recommend especially if you find yourself just wanting more from the franchise than the few movies we have. Keep in mind tv series get less budget than movies do and that can be tough with animation so the animation isn’t as good as the movies are but it’s still really good. [side-note: Did y’all hear that instead of getting a 4th movie we are getting another stupid live action remake?? Like we are tired of all the remakes! We want NEW things not just a new way off messing with an already good show/ movie that will likely either be identical or just plain bad. Another blatant money grab instead of creativity, it’s really sad to see that being the predominant thing rn]

    Love your videos, I'm new to your channel. One thing I love it seems most people gloss over is Hiccup first saying he "couldn't" kill a dragon before saying he "wouldn't" a fact Astrid called him out on.
    Hiccup: Oh, for the love of-- I was a coward! I was weak! I wouldn't kill a dragon!
    Astrid: You said "wouldn't" that time.
    Hiccup: Whatever! I wouldn't! Three hundred years, and I'm the first Viking who wouldn't kill a dragon!

  • @incogneeto_mosquito
    @incogneeto_mosquito 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Just a few fun facts, toothless's eye being open when the wing panned over it and the hesitation when touching hiccups hand were animation errors they decided to keep in because of how well it worked. Happy little accidents. And you can see toothless reaching out with his... Paws? Feet? I don't know what dragons have, but he can't reach him when he's falling, so he actually needed to bite and yank hiccups foot to get him to safety. Little me always wondered how only his foot burnt off, and during one of my rewatches when I was older it just hit me like a brick to the face.
    And as for the scouldren (boiling water dragon) you can see one in the background of the third movie, but they are never a focus point in the movies. They do feature quite a few times in the series tho, most memorable one would be one that the gang have to save, and ruffnut ends up naming him scouldy I think? And have a few episodes that revolves around them. There are a lot of new dragons introduced in the next two films, but the ones in the book mainly get explored in the series. The boneknapper has a short film about it, and the skrll actually gets to have a quite complex relationship with hiccup and toothless (I'm trying to sell the series without giving critical spoilers) all the series take place between the first and second movie, riders and defenders of berk taking place right after this movie, going through the transition and the things the people have to adjust to, and expanding the world a bit. Favourites include speedstingers, flightmare, fireworms and changewings.
    Then race to the edge is next, and we get to meet soooo many new dragons, see a lot of new places and people. My favourites introduced in rtte are the deathsong, razorwhip, sentinals and armourwing. And that's only to name a few, there are so many more that you rarely if ever get to see in the movies. I'd love to watch your reactions to it, but dreamworks is a bit if a female dog when it comes to copyright, so even if you don't do reactions to it, I would still highly recommend watching it in your own time.
    There's something mentioned in the beginning of the second film that happens in race to the edge (you do not need the context, but it is super sweet to see how it happened) and there are also 2 short movies, gift of the night fury taking place after this movie and being referenced in the third movie, and then the homecoming one that takes place after the 3rd (holiday specials) I'm relatively new to your channel, but I've been enjoying your videos so much🌸

    HTTYD is my favorite move in the world! So some fun facts about he move is that toothless was going to be small and green like the Terrible Terrors but one of the movie producer had a screen saver of a Black Panther and so they decided on Toothless's design. There are also around 200 different species of dragons in the entire Franciase raning from the movies, shows, comic books, mini movies, and spirn offs such as the baby show Rescue Riders and the show Dragons the Nine Realms which is about Hiccup's descendant. The massive Queen Dragon at the end is called the Red Death. Alos each character has their own theme song and when Hiccup and Toothless first fly with eachother it plays both of their theme songs at the same time.

    6:35
    Fun fact that I've heard (might be wrong but I'm pretty sure its true)
    The eye being open was actually an animation error at first, but the animators and directors liked it being open so much that they kept it.
    Another animation error was actually Toothless flinching away from Hiccup's hand at first when they were about to touch for the first time at around 13:48 (wasnt shown in the video but it happens in the movie). Again, the animators and directors liked it so much they kept it.

Also you get to see more tribes of people, which can really build more on the world apart from the 3 / 6 (if you include the 3 dragon hunter leaders in the third movie too) villains of the movies.
