    Revisiting old products is such an important thing that reviewers need to focus on, since it's closer to what users will experience in the long run.

    While Smartshift is a good idea in theory, I think the execution failed with this laptop. I own a Dell G5 SE and I've kinda figured out how Smartshift works.
    The total shared power(115 W) goes through the CPU first, and then the GPU gets its share. For example, when under both CPU and GPU load, CPU Power readings will show 115 Watts and GPU Power will show 70 Watts. This means the CPU is using 45 W to boost its clocks and sends the remaining 70 to the GPU. But this doesn't work as intended because the 115 W cooks the CPU, at least it does to my 4800H. The GPU almost never sees full utilization because CPU starts throttling immediately. 4800H and 5600M are beasts on their own but they're ironically crippled by Smartshift.
    Disabling CPU boost through power plans as many people on the Internet suggested actually fixes the bigger part of this problem. But I've experienced crashes on some games with the boost off, whereas I don't have them with the boost on. My guess is that disabling CPU boost confuses SmartShift and causes crashes. Disabling boost isn't a favorable solution anyway as you give up CPU performance. Let's take a look at GTA V as an example:
    CPU Boost: On
    Settings: High-ish
    Average FPS: Around 100
    Temps: 95-105°C CPU, 61°C GPU
    CPU Boost: Off
    Settings: High-ish
    Average FPS: 85
    Temps: 60°C CPU, 55-60°C GPU
    CPU Boost: Off
    Settings: Very High
    Average FPS: 85
    Temps: 80°C CPU, 80°C GPU
    As you can see, especially between the second and third tests, the CPU temps differed significantly even if they were pretty much putting in the same amount of work. That's because in the third test GPU requested more power to keep up with higher settings and this extra power also went through the CPU first. Second test had 60-70 W CPU Power while third test had around 90 W and the increase was equal in GPU Power. This is the flaw of Smartshift in Dell G5 SE, CPU has to endure both its own and the GPU's power so it turns into an oven even on GPU heavy loads.

    • @pritamlaskar
      @pritamlaskar 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man great input! Makes a lot of sense. I just got the 4600h model. So what do you propose for temps as low as possible WITH playable FPS, I don't care if 20% reduction happens in gaming performance

    • @bubbleezzz4942
      @bubbleezzz4942 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pritamlaskar My current setup is leaving everything as Dell intended with an agressive custom fan curve in Alienware Command Center, using it on a cooling pad. I use the latest Dell provided drivers with no other third-party software. As you probably noticed this isn't the most stable laptop and it's prone to crash even more if you tinker with it much. It might be just my bad luck but I remember getting crashes more often when I disabled CPU boost or when I capped FPS to get better thermals.
      Your 4600h model will probably do better in gaming as there isn't much difference in gaming performance between 4600h and 4800h, but 4600h should need less power for itself and have more to spare for the GPU.
      Create a new thermal profile in Alienware Command Center(AWCC) and set up an agressive fan curve for both the cpu fan and the system fan. Scan installed games with AWCC and assign them your new thermal profile. Your fans will work accordingly to your fan curve now and you'll eliminate the problem of passive fans. Keep AWCC minimized before launching games. Also, you can hit Fn+F7 to enable AWCC high performance mode which sets your power plan to high performance and runs your fans at constant max speed. It's loud and may shorten your fans' lifetime but better your fans than your CPU. I use this mode for demanding games.
      If you're willing, you can use Ryzan Controller and set custom TDP values for your CPU. Keep in mind that the TDP that you set for your CPU will also be used by the GPU, so setting it to the default 45 TDP will be crippling. I'd suggest going around 90 TDP if you're going to use Ryzen Controller, but again we don't know how Smartshift operates and playing with these values is swimming in deep waters. For example, I didn't know at the time that CPU power would be shared with GPU and I was surprised at how awful the performance was with 45 TDP.

    Hey Jarrod, I am a G315 2020 user which has the same design as the G515 . The main thing is that the hinges of both these laptops are really bad .The hinge is made up of cheap plastic and there have been hinge popping issues for these laptop users. The hinge breaking off issue happens usually in 6-12 months of purchase. This leads the user to get it replaced and it costs around 150-200$.So instead of the MRP, there is a price of 150-200$ per year of getting the hinge replaced our own pockets. So it is actually better to choose another laptop instead of this , as you spend 600 - 800$ for hinge replacements in its lifetime (Or buy a 300$ warranty).

    Reviewer -> with the RX5600M firmware in place we can now use Ryzen Controller (RyzenADJ) to thermally limit the CPU by telling the smartshift controller how much total power is allowed. Setting the Thermal limit will drop over all laptop/system performance but for some games (MMOs like WoW, ESO, GW2, and heavy CPU games) where the GPU is not hit hard (60% or so) This can lock the CPU at 85c-88c and maintain 4.125Ghz for the PPT period down to 3.6-2.8Ghz after. Be mindful that this will limit the power split between the CPU+GPU for games that heavily hit the GPU and cause the CPU to 'break' and drop clocks to 1.3ghz-2.1ghz while the GPU is under heavy loads (Cyberpunk2077 shows this beautifully). Currently there is no way to 'unload' Ryzen Controller without a reboot, so just make sure you do not auto start the application so you can 'unload' it when you want higher GPU usage. But its a nice way to control thermals when you want/need to.

    The slight performance drop is definitely a preferable alternative to higher temps, though it is interesting how some games have seen a boost in fps and others have not. Maybe the Windows or drivers update also had something to do with it?

    Dutch user here! I bought a G3 for €999. (Stock G5 is €1150+ and AMD version NOT available)
    Hoping to do 6+ years with it. (I don't run heavy games, stuff like War thunder mostly)
    In my country the AMD versions of the legion 5 suck (1650 gtx only, atleast for now), intel ones are over €1150, and the HP omen is even more expensive at €1200+ for the gpu/cpu version I opted for.
    An alternative would've been a TUF A15 with the same cpu but with an rtx 2060 for €50 more. However, I hated the oh so apparent looks, and well... It's an A15.
    My G3 has the 10750h and gtx 1660ti. I'm happy with it, but what do other viewers think? Did I make a "mistake" not buying the Legion 5(i) or an Omen, which are both far more expensive? And why?
    SIDENOTE: I am aware of the "problems" this series carry (in some cases) but I liked the "stealthy" design, card slots, performance and... Price, most importantly.

      Same. I immediately liquid metal all my laptops and honestly haven't looked back. Yeah it's a little tedious as you have to reapply it down the line for it to be permanent with the crappy laptop heatspreaders but performance has only ever improved and noise levels always go down. Temps stay about the same but that's how modern laptops work.

    • @LiveType
      @LiveType 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MonsieurX12 There's a bunch on youtube. Main thing is to apply as little as possible as all problems I've seen stem from applying too much. Apply a small amount to a swab and spread it around until you get a layer of it evenly spread on the die and heatsink. It may take a bit of you have a super polished surface as the liquid metal won't initially adhere due to the high surface tension. If you get it on other things just use isopropyl alcohol and wipe it off. Nail polish/tape over the smds helps if you're sketched out and adds some extra peace of mind but I've legitimately never seen the nail polish actually be useful. After you've done one application do another in a few months as the liquid metal will react away with the copper turning into a silver copper-gallium alloy. Nothing to be concerned about just need to apply more. Thermal performance will technically drop slightly as the alloy is less conductive than pure copper but still an order of magnitude more conductive than thermal paste.
      Also should've mentioned make sure the heatsink plate is solid copper. Scratch away a portion of the heatsink away from the center. It should remain copper colored. If it's silver after scratching away the copper that means the heatsink is aluminium and shouldn't be used with liquid metal.

    So I wound up taking a risk and bought this. I got it for 700$ and it was the right price for the specs. I think the highest I've seen the cpu get is 88. The graphics card very rarely ever goes above 80. HOWEVER. You have to START with gmode / max fans *before* you open a game. some of the more cpu intensive games I've tried have almost instantly overheated. I haven't seen 90 degrees yet with the fans on. (And yes, it's loud. I almost always have to use a headset.) It is what is. You obviously get what you pay for with this but Its able to play games and I saved about 300$ from other options I was looking at, and that's good enough for me.
