I knocked down my wall for an open plan living room but can I plaster it like a PRO?

  • Hi all 👋 A few weeks ago, I showed you how we removed a weird and dated internal window and tudor style beam in our hallway/living room/dining room space.
    If you haven't watched that, I recommend checking it out here to see what it used to look like: • It's DESTRUCTION TIME ...
    But as we're in the middle of waiting for our new hearth to arrive (before we install hardwood flooring and tile the chimney breast), we decided it was time to remove the brick wall where the old
    window used to be.
    Not only did I have to cut it out, but had to spend HOURS of research learning how to make good with the exposed bricks.
    This meant learning everything like dot and dab, fitting galvanised steel thincoat angle beads and how a beginner can plaster to achieve a pro finish. But did it turn out well?
    Big shout out to ‪@Onthetrowel‬ Oh The Trowel TH-cam channel - I've watched many videos about SBR, repairing plasterboard patches and this video had everything I needed to help me do this job: • Bricklayer makes Plast...

    If you haven't, get yourself a laser crosshair thingy. It's one of those tools I never envisaged using as much as I do! I've used the Knauf equivalent to the Delapro and, yes, it does take a while to dry but that really is the whole point, us amateurs aren't quick enough for traditional plaster especially when the weather is hot!

    Handy tip for bedding on that hearth in the fireplace - it can be very difficult to lift something heavy into a space where you can access it from one edge. So lay your bed of mortar first, and then lay a couple of strips of plastic pipe or conduit front to back in the mortar. The pipe wants to be marginally thicker than the bed of mortar, and long enough to stick out of the front a bit. Now you can lay the far edge of the stone on the pipes, and safely slide it back into the recess while supporting the front edge, without risking your back. Once it is in place, pull out the pipes out from the gap to drop hearth onto the bed of mortar, and then set about tapping it level. (same trick works for heavy stone resin shower trays as well).

    So here's a tip for you Vicky, when you did the header piece of plasterboard and you was measuring it to fit, make the board bigger than you need, screw it in place then cut it back afterwards, same with dot and dab when you do reveals, stick them on and let them go off, butt any other boards up to it them cut of any excess. Saves a lot of time, and you know it's the correct size.

    What an improvement! It looks a lot better without the wall. So spacious and easy to access now. You could rollerskate around the place! ;) I just made a hearth out of a salvaged marble fire surround and hearth. I cut down the salvaged hearth to form the part that goes into the room. I then cut off the 'legs' of the upright fire surrounded to leave a large piece to fit inside the fireplace. So I ended up with two pieces like you have got. I first made sure the surface was nice and flat by applying a coat of mortar to the inside part. I then installed the exterior hearth part with a solid bed of slightly raked tile adhesive. I made sure I didn't push down too much because I wanted to avoid the interior part being proud of the exterior part. Once the hearth (exterior part) had dried (two days), I laid the interior part. I bought a suction cup handle from B&Q to enable me to drop it onto the adhesive neatly and slowly with no risk of hands or fingers getting caught. Tip - apply the suction handle onto a wet surface as this makes it stick for longer. Another tip is that the suction only lasts so long, so ensure a good stick and then work quickly. I made sure my adhesive was able to hold the weight of the slab but not so stiff it would be hard to get the slab level. As the slab was extremely heavy, the adhesive was thicker than normal. I dropped the slab down onto the adhesive as slowly and carefully as possible with the suction handle to ensure it didn't distort the adhesive bed - just laid it down super gently. The suction handle also enables you to lift up the slab if you find it sinks, pull it into position or remove it and try again. I grouted the gaps and it all turned out well. Phew! Good luck with your hearth. I'm sure you will nail it!

    You did well, for anon-plasterer very well!
    You are right in the Speedskim is best for large areas ...... I have kept my plastic blade in and am more than happy with it.
    I have never tried roller plaster but obviously it is a thing in the industry now as it is quicker. You do need to "polish" plaster to get that mirror smooth finish and it can be a fine balance between not enough and too much water for it to work well! Nobody does more practice at plastering than a plasterer and practice does make perfect ....... But there is a saying that can be applied here "Grinder and paint make me the welder I 'aint!" ;o)
    I suspect you have already done this but have a care over how strong you mix the "cement" for your floor! Too much sand and it will be too soft, to little and it will be too hard! That is why you see brick walls tearing themselves apart! One trick when you mark plasterboard for cutting is to use a plumb line and snap a chalk mark from end to end with ease (also more accurate to get your vertical lines on a wall ...... I even use one to start off when papering a wall). Chalk lines may be "old school" but they have worked for a long time!
    Also good to see Mr TCD being called in on occasion! Some things just make sense to have two people doing it!

    As a diy-er of a 200yrs old farmhouse myself, I found that the corner beads showed rust marks after a few months when painted with white emulsion. I had to go back, seal the beads and paint again. But I might have done something wrong🤷‍♀️

    Another great video Vikkie, thank you. Is that a little bit of blood on your plasterboard at 11:50?

      Thanks! No, I don't know what that is? Maybe something from the manufacturer. I'm curious if the rest of them have it on now. They're stacked up in the old cottage out of the way 🤣

    I couldn't help but cringe when I saw that roller come out!!! ... But fair play to you, not a bad job at all. A million times better than the exposed breeze block from before right?!
    A few pointers...
    1) the reason you kept making holes in your finish with the speed scim is because it flexes so would've dug in, should only really use it on big flat walls.(just got to the bit where you said this - sorry!)
    2) Don't trowel away from/into your blend (i.e if your blend line is floor to ceiling, only trowel in the floor>Ceiling direction, never wall to wall direction)
    3) Use staples for beads on plasterboard
    4) put MORE gear on than you need when working between tight beads(close enough for your trowel to span), your trowel then acts as a straight edge and "rules" the excess off(stop you from digging in like at 24:02)
    5)use plenty of water on the blend to avoid taring(reading this back, "plenty" could be missunderstood...but splash a bit of water on it everytime you trowel it once it picks up a bit)

    How wide is the opening between the dining area and the chimney breast? Wonder if you could hang a sliding partition that goes behind the chimney breast when open, that would enable you to keep the room with the fire in it cosy and not be too much in the way when stored behind the chimney breast.

    • @TheCarpentersDaughterUK
      @TheCarpentersDaughterUK  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a very interesting idea! The opening sadly is much wider than the back if the chimney breast and other bit of wall. But you've got me thinking... even if stylish curtains were installed, it may look elegant

    • @LornaWillimott-ur5vd
      @LornaWillimott-ur5vd 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Or something in say two pieces, sort of a mobile wall but a heavy curtain could be a good solution to see if closing the space off works and you could always reuse the curtains somewhere else later if you decide not to stick with it.

    I see you're using 'single stave' parquet. Brave. Looks incredible when finished, though.
    I'm currently ripping out the carpet in my bedroom and replacing it with 14mm thick parquet 'locking' panels(220x20cm)
    Unfortunately, it's a small room, with a wardrobe, bed, desk and 2 IKEA bookshelves, and no place to move them...
    17year old carpets are grooty. In a bad way.
    I spent the time watching your video removing nails from the old trim pieces.

      As an American who came to live in France, I prefer no carpet now. When I go home to see family, I almost cringe at the sight of a carpet. Last year while I was there, my sister cleaned hers with a machine and even on the third pass the water was dirty. I have tile all through the main rooms and baths and I installed floating faux parquet in the bedroom The kids had a thinner carpet in their rooms when small, but I replaced those when each started grade school. I think carpet (or throw rugs) should be cleaned often, especially with fur babies in the house. Also, when I walk barefoot on the tile, it's not really cold, but room temp.
