You know if you tuck your head and body into the rounding of the barrel with the the horse he will feel that and he will be one with you and you with him ! When you get to erect in the saddle the horse will think you are wanting him to stop or slow down go thru the rounding of the barrel with him ! Rounding posture is everything…

If you "think" the horse is being abused, it's because you don't know. Have you ever had a dog that would do anything to please you? The bond between horse and rider is cultivated over years. All I can say is "you don't know what you don't know"!
I’ve watched barrel racing before and i’d have to say i’m a fan of amber Leigh snider! Badass female rider who got seriously injured after an accident but then fought to get back on her horse

Some people don’t even wear spurs, but if they do, i’m pretty sure they test them on their skin and then lightly on their horse, making sure it doesn’t hurt. That’s what I did when I got my first ever spurs.(sorry if that sounded rude at all)

No worries! You do this so that the horse runs faster. I'm currently learning this and it really helps, as soon as the reins touch the horse's hindquarters it becomes faster, my horse is well trained, which means he knows that he has to run faster. However, my riding instructor said: "No one should make it so strong that it becomes unbearable for the horse..." -my wise riding instructor

The reins don't hurt and are very soft. I've hit myself with my reins HARD before, and it didn't hurt. And it's just to make sure the horse runs as fast as it can.

We are called to be stewards of the animals. This looks a lot more like risky exploitation. Simply for entertainment, ego glance, and or profit. What would Jesus say? There is a reason why so many barrel horses have lameness issues. Many have a very uncomfortable and arthritic retirement. Unfortunately Rodeo folks appear to have very low consciousness and don't realize how inhumane they are. I have met some who don't care and know it hurts horses. They do it anyway. Because it seems they are lost humans looking for a fix.
I HATE when they hit their horses! If you can't train and win without violence you don't deserve to play the game. A trained horse knows his job! A good rider has a good repore with her mount! It's all about the relationship between them as a team and whether the horse really likes his job! That needs to be considered going forward in these sports. Let's win because the team is happy and wants the same thing. Humans make excuses for their actions too much.
