- I made a thing! turns out the thing is slightly difficult to get on plane and behave like a fast airboat! Its easy to make an amphibious rc car but harder to make one that can go fast!

Being a hovercraft snob this just shows you anything can move with enough power thrown on it. My hovercraft circa 1991 had 13 HP and easily got 40 MPH with 400lbs payload. Yes, my current one has 40HP but only does 55 MPH. Should have made this a catamaran style good iterative design Peter

I think it's not so much about moving the water down out of the way, causing drag, but moving it to the side, like a wedge, or most boat cruses' front.

Eliot Gower it isnt a hoverboat. hover boats have inflatable skirts. These are called fan boats. they do not hover in anyway at all.. They use them for when a prop doesn't have enough water to work efficiently. not so good on land tho, where as a hover boat/hover craft would suit most terrains.

ganymedeIV4 why not? They sell premade RC power wheel type vehicles already. Probably safer for an adult to be in control than some of the kids I've seen driving them (crashing into parked cars, people, dogs, etc). I wanted to get one but my kids have already outgrown them.

Today's lesson: the best way to make an amphibious RC vehicle is to just ditch the wheels and make a hovercraft.

Look up the EFV. They did something similar with the tracks, retracting them for water operations, but they also had a plate to cover the holes. Your wheel wells would cause a lot of drag on water.

basebilljr07 I made one , no wheels is the answer, just water skids on a flat bit of foam with some tailerons and rudders and a prop up front, worked pretty well. Was a long time ago now and it died when water got into ESC followed by battery catching fire in the middle of the lake! Wish I had filmed that!

I have been thinking of doing this with my Helion Rock Slider. I want the foam to come on and off easily. Just use the bigger tires for propulsion and steering. Peter definitely made it look doable. Mine won't be anything Peter Fancy.

You sure did a nice job on this, Peter. Though I might have tackled this slightly differently and had gone for a subhydro propeller rather than a skimmer like what you built. Make no mistake though, a skimmer has better uses being fully amphibious but you can do without the wheels if that's the case. With a subhydro design, the dynamics of the RC will be more akin to what you were initially after; a lifting nose and submerging tail when in high speed in the water. Just like a speed boat. you could have also shaped the bow to have a pointier feature rather than a flat one like what skimmers usually do. Water skimming boats tend to be pretty unstable at high speeds in the water so you might opt to break the water rather than skimming the nose over it. Or maybe have a mechanism to deploy hydrofoils for better stability at high speeds? It should look far more presentable, in my opinion. Hope that helps with some ideas in your future projects.
