I watched you doing the cutting under with a modern multi tool, I just remember I did it with a panel saw over 20 years ago, people do not realise how to do a good wood floor that looks original. The idea of using old carpet tiles as an under lay is great.
Phenomenal attention to detail, all that prep work levelling will speed up the floor laying I thought and then he goes into even more careful, methodical, no compromise detail when actually laying the boards. A true craftsman, proud of his work.
I'd love to buy this house when he's finished it. I just know it's going to be perfect, and beautiful..no-one will know the effort and love poured into it. But I would!😉🤫

Your channel is a valuable resource for people who don't know how to do these things but want to work on their own homes, so thanks for putting it up where we can see it.
I've got so much work to do but I've just watched that whole video and it was time very well spent. I think the combination of the methodical work plus the lack of talking/music turns it into a form of meditation.
The meticulousness is astounding. I watched my floors being installed and several times I thought "that's not how I would do it" but what do I really know. The preparation is everything! I hope you show the skirting being installed. I need to see the finished project!!

WOW. If you are going to do a job do it the best you can - my father taught me. I always wanted to be a finish carpenter, and I was for a good while in my younger years but health issues ended that dream. I know from experience a lot about finish carpentry (as opposed to construction carpentry) but this man is a MASTER. I am stuck in my recliner now, after another knee surgery and I am in awe as I binge on New Yorkshire Workshop videos.
The joys of old houses where little is square or level! Your custom-fitting around doorways, curved steps etc is admirable. I really felt for your knees without strap-on kneeling pads! Beautiful finished effect!
Wonderful, meticulous work! You will not remember all the time you spent on un-padded knees, but they will remind you later in life! Ask me how I know. Best!
I remember watching two loud-mouthed lager-yobs nail down cheap flooring to several rooms of a house. Every board either bounced or creaked, several cracked within a year and the entire floor looked like a cheap landlord house. You get what you put into a project, and your projects always get stunning attention and craftsmanship. Thank you for making these videos.
I have made all these moves, telling myself there has to be an easier way...... Nope. There isn't. So satisfying to see another taking the time and doing it as well as it can be done. Well done sir!
@@darrenfoley8330 More experience would tell you that stable wood in a stable house doesn't move a whole lot. "Leaving a gap" is what manufacturers recommend to avoid liabilities and in a rectangular room is no biggy. It is often, dare I say usually, impractical.
@@davegrier523 true. Doesn't expand THAT much. He left a bit of room anyway. Also means that the baseboard will look really nice without some shitty moulding addon.
OLD houses are so beautiful. And this flooring just knocks it out of the park! This house will continue to stand the test of time with you giving this level of love and care to it.
Leveling floor method makes sense still much more work butt pay off greater. Those new floors r gorgeous, a pretty penny spent, ur taste is rich, organic in everything Russ 😘 Love watching how floors thresholds bottom of stairs r measured, chiseled to fit flooring tight into corners, into stairs, always on the mark so interesting. Oh yes now i get why doorway needs 2 pieces 👍🏻 wow so quiet no squeaking floors like my old 1900 floors🤷🏻♀️ thank your Russ onto the next, I'm catching up🇺🇸
I hope you haven't suffered a headache because that roof material is not part of the structures. It can evaporate into the room air and can cause symptoms, including headaches. Here in Finland, there are very precise regulations on construction, and you couldn't do that here. Otherwise, a really beautiful result and a great job you are doing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I was wondering about this felt myself. Searching for 2mm roofing felt only returns torch-on felt like what is on shed roofs, is this the same stuff or has he used a more modern version without bitumen/asphalt I wonder.. I was looking to pack up a low spot in my floor before putting in laminate so this looked perfect - but the last thing I want is fumes or headaches!
You are a master craftsman. There seems to be nothing that you are incapable of achieving. Simply glorious! Edit : I first saw those stairs a year ago and was hooked….it only got better and more diverse from there.
As a Yorkshire lad myself, I am very impressed, fab work pal .... Top tip: As a dead weight for the flooring during install, I use the Mother-in-law, she has her uses at times.
A superb job. From leveling the subfloor, using an underlayment that also acts as sound deadening, and--most importantly of all--avoiding the use of thresholds at all doors to create a truly seamless install. But to be fair, this is the bare minimum I've come to expect from you.
As tedious as this removal/installation ordeal seems to have been, the results are striking. Most people would have said, "Screw it, we'll install carpeting." But you have created a beautiful and sturdy floor that will last for many, many years. Well done, sir.
Incredible work, as someone that's relatively new to the joinery world you make it look like the easiest thing in the world.... It absolutely isn't. Wish I had ½ the skills you do, Bravo.

Very interesting indeed! We had a floor installed in quite a large house with long runs along the corridors, and we found out 6 months later that the expansion gaps were not big enough. Required a lot of adjustment. Lesson was that the time of year when you have the floor installed is quite important.
Also, the type of wood you use effects expansion. This looked like a factory made floor---solid top on a built up core---and it doesn't move much. Or at least it's no supposed to!
THANK YOU for no background music. Very nice video. Looks real nice. (Carpenter 100 years from now): "Someone cut 1" off the bottom of all the casements and mouldings".
Your attention to detail is mind blowing. The finish is superb !! I used to say, when watching other craftsmen, I would settle for half their ability, In your case I would settle for 1% of your ability and consider my improvement 100% better!
Beautiful job. No-one could ever accuse you of lacking attention to detail! My house here in New Zealand is floored with Mātai, a native timber quite similar in colouring to the material you just laid. The house was built the old way, where the entire floor is installed before the house framing goes on top. It means the floor is under everything and if ever any rooms are changed, the floor is continuous underneath.
Mine are rimu, laid the same Kiwi way. Now 65yrs old, they are a little worn in doorways, a little off level, etc. A good sanding and sealing, and they look amazing! While the new flooring looks great, i wonder what the original floor boards would have looked like restored, and why they were covered... I am really enjoying watching the attention to detail in this restoration. ❤
Fantastic!! Truly looks amazing - Just a word of caution for anybody looking to do something similar - In an old house there are often / nearly always, loads of pipes running around the place that in time will need to be accessed to repair leaks or wiring that needs to be checked or amended etc. I can't tell you the amount of times we have had to lift floorboards in an emergency over the last fifteen years. if our flooring had been as beautiful as this we would have just cried taking a multi-tool to it! An alternative options might be to consider replacing the originals and not having interlocking boards and using period style nails to fix - potentially more draughty I know and a slightly different look but still can look lovely with less drama in the future. I hope this doesn't come across as negative.- I really do love the look and great job / attention to detail - cheers.

I don’t know who or where you have learnt your career from, but who ever has taught you or has been your boss to show all this to you needs a praise and you also need a praise for learning it patiently and doing your work patiently without literally cutting corners! The local government should give you all refurbishment jobs in the government buildings or mansions that are open for visits that need refurb or protecting the current classic floorings. I hope you also pass on this trade to your children or to new apprenticeships in the way you know how to do things. It can be a pain but someone has gone through t to show and teach you and the trade at this quality needs to continue after you too. If only there was flooring competitions with a prise of funding you could do soo much more with this!

Fantastic job, and what a crazy process with the levelling, but genius nevertheless, in doing so you've preserved all thats underneath nearly perfectly, got a lot of time for that! Hats off to you, I'm a builder spending my evenings watching some more of the same, need to find a hobby 😎😂
Some good tips for installing flooring. Beautiful job. Reminds me of fixing up a couple old houses while we were living in them as well. Makes good memories, eh.
Excellent work, I really love the extra effort you put in so that the flooring can run under the stairs and doorframes. Please do a video for installing the skirting.
Once again sublime skill of a master craftsman on display here. The depth of knowledge & the research done support the skill set on display perfectly. What a learning curve for anyone contemplating house renovations. A beautiful, beautiful job sir, you are a credit to your craft. Don from South Aust.
Your level of workmanship is to be admired and aspired to. The felt is a brilliant idea. I have had to replace the ends of four floor joists because their ends had rotted. The new joists are slightly smaller and was wondering how I could lay the floor without resorting to trying to strip some very fine fillets of wood.
It might be interesting for your audience to know a little about where you acquired your skills, the quality and breadth of the work you do is truly impressive.
The manner in which you trimmed your door jambs/casings was top notch. When I do this, I add a small but invaluable extra step: I will add a 1/16th shim to the board acting as the height guide for the flush cut saw. Doing so gives me a tiny fraction of extra wiggle-room, which accomplishes two things. First, I avoid the inevitable hassles of too snug floor board (due to small variations in the subfloor and the cutting process). The boards slide right in every time. Second, this tiny, nearly invisible, 1/16th gap also creates a shadow line, which eliminates (camouflages, really) the inevitable areas where the flooring touches--or doesn’t touch--the door jambs/casings. The eye doesn’t really notice minor variations in a shadow line as long as it is (relatively) unbroken, but the eye does notice where a shadow line starts & stops. Look at the baseboards in any house with hardwood floors (or tiles) and you will see this right away. This is the main reason why less experienced carpenters use shoe molding in conjunction with baseboard molding-to hide these gaps. Shoe mold is very bendy and can be forced to conform to variations in the flooring. I also use this technique with my baseboards and plinth blocks (shim them 1/16th off the floor). First, it creates visual continuity with the door jambs/casings, and second, it solves the same problems (minor irregularities in the baseboards and wood floor). I also put a back bevel on my baseboards, a time-honored technique with carpenters, which makes the above process even smoother and more uniform.
Hey, there are some of in freedom land who like hearing these exotic words like "skirting board," "rebate," "millimeter..." ;-) Excellent work. Thanks for sharing it.

Bravo
I could watch these guys do stuff like this all day... especially when they're good. I'm sure they're shelling out some serious coin on this guy, and he deserves every cent!
It's his own house.
Подписался на этот канал недавно, может пол года, но за это время столько научился ,, и столько нового увидел, и особенно к уважению к своему ТРУДУ ! А это в наше время, мало кто обращает внимание. Нет ?
Beautiful and warm floor. I like the contrast with that rough sawn balustrade. It's so barn-chic.
I'm pretty sure that balustrade is temporary, just for safety during the remodeling phase.
That looks like bamboo flooring. I’ve just laid that in my daughters house, it’s brilliant
Omg I needed this tutorial. I also have an old home and I was really worried about installing over the wood but this has given me more confidence
Such a hard working and loving his proffession.such a perfection and precision
The craftsman you'd want working in your house.
"Freedom land" - May it ever be...
This is such wonderful work. Thank you for all you do.
Hardly.
Quality mate, I’ve just paid to have my hall done, I paid the wrong guy, your work is on another level
A good handyman never gets lonely with his work
never seen a floor leveled like that. Great craftsmanship
Thank you for allowing me to watch your extraordinary work. Please don't ever stop.
Excellent ! Patience et savoir faire ..toujours un régal de regarder vos vidéos 😊😊😊
You are an expert teacher, you do an admirable job!
Artistic level of artisanal expertise. Sublime viewing.
Excellent work...the place is a lot "cozier" now!
He's a Yorkshireman. Good enough for me.
@@graham6229 Indeed, England has produced some of the finest craftsmanship known to man 👍🔨🇮🇪
Floor looks really nice. Grand work as usual greetings from Lancashire 👍
Where's your channel?
Feels like you're bandwagoning. Leave the it to the Maestro Salieri
I'm a newish carpenter and I learn a ton from your channel. Thanks.
Your mindset to make a perfection on this level is stunning. I love your work very much. Great work.
Hey, there are some of in freedom land who like hearing these exotic words like "skirting board," "rebate," "millimeter..." ;-)
Excellent work. Thanks for sharing it.
