Actually Tim Burton never considered Jim Carrey for playing Brainiac (He even joke about it in the Death of Superman Lives documentary by saying: "Jim Carrey was even born?").

I'm kind of thankful Superman Lives never got made because I don't see Nick Cage as Superman, to be honest. But just like many casting choices people weren't okay about, they were surprised to see they could pull it off. I know that when Tim Burton came onboard he apparently ditched his draft but that was what I mainly took inspiration from for this. Things like Batman appearing onscreen, the Shadowcaster or Lois and Jimmy escaping on a flying vehicle are straight out of Kevin Smith's script.
