You can really see the passion that Burton and Cage shared for this project in these clips. It’s sad that we couldn’t see their vision truly realized, but it’s pretty awesome that we got just a taste in “the flash.”
Nicholas Cage seems like a genuinely nice dude to hang out with. I know he's a huge Superman fan and I don't know how this would have turned out, but I'm sorry he didn't get the chance to play the character.
And then after the success of that movie, it expanded into DCEU of that universe but suceeded and managed to build up 22 movies towards crisis on infinite earths
That's kinda the point. This was supposed to be a completely new Superman. Not the Richard Donner version. And I honestly would've liked to have seen this new alternative take on the character. At least he doesn't snap people's necks off in this version.
You can love or hate Nick Cage's acting, but there is 1 thing we can ALL agree on: he is great (way good) at acting 2 identities. I feel that his Superman/Clark Kent swap could had been perfect. Hiding his identity at plain sight, just by acting "smaller", more vulnerable, more human. Now THAT is something I would love to see Cage tackling.
Cage actually recently said that he would've approached his Superman similar to his performance in City of Angels (1998). I had to watch the movie myself to see how he was. And he was very calm, talked low and always had a warm smile. (I mean angel? Superman? It's close enough.) And after seeing it, I was really upset he wasn't Superman because that movie's performance showed he could've been a really good and likeable Man of Steel.
But that was meant to be a new take on the Clark Kent alias of Kal-El, who often portays his fake image as this klutz, socially awkward, naive and regular Joe kinda guy with a sci-fi fanboy nerd twist. Point is Kal-El does this to draw attention away from him for the fact he is the GODDAMN MAN OF STEEL himself...SUPERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I honestly didn't mind that. It made Clark look more like an alien freak than Superman as he tries to be human, resulting in him looking freakier in the process. He would look so dorky that literally nobody would believe this dude would be Superman. Which is also why they cast Nicolas Cage to begin with because they wanted people to understand that he is an alien.
I like the no underpants thing. The circus strong man reference with those exo-draws tethers superman to one certain time and nobody gets the reference anymore. I say let him be alien the new 52 design was fine
And the fake muscles built into the suit and having them kinda highlighted using darker blues to make it look like there's shadows. After Man of Steel, just look at the suit and it looks like they painted on his muscles.
It’s actually the metallic padding underneath the suit. The fabric of the MoS suit itself becomes slightly translucent once it’s stretched over the padding, hence the sort of visible abs and biceps. The Justice League version specifically used shiny metallic under padding so that the suit - under the intended lighting from Snyder’s shoot - would make the suit take on a vibrancy and almost sparkle. Unfortunately, the way it was reshot the suit took on a weird turquoise color and the padding ended up looking like smeared deodorant and just was a complete abomination. There’s promo footage that was shot by Snyder that was officially released (I believe the AT&T branded 2-3 minute long character promos) where we see the suit in its proper lighting and color grading and it looks really nice. Without it necessarily looking brighter or more colorful, the suit appears to have evolved to match the theme of a happier, more confident and mature post-resurrection Superman.
He then looses his powers and Is places under arrest so he agrees to have his face switched with Lex Luthor (played by John Travolta) to go undercover and thwart Luthor's evil plan, the ending of the movie takes place on a plane full of convicts nicknamed Con Air
This would've been the most amazing most wonderful train wreck the world would have ever known. "What does the cape mean, exactly?" Perfect. Absolutely perfect.
