You can do it. I achieved 515 when I was 53 and I'm currently working to get back in the 500+ Club at 63. A back injury in January derailed me for several months, but I'm back up to 435. Stay Strong!!
Funnily enough I am chasing the goal of 300kg at 23 like you said at 12:13 - in my final block peaking towards it now, pulled 285kg for a comfy double last week, got 290 for a single next week then the big 300kg january 2nd. Documented my whole journey and its been so fun to have this goal. That being said your point of attainable and digestable goals is 100% spot on. I hadn't even fathomed 300 as an attainable goal until this past year. Set goals yes but don't look too far ahead, never know what could happen. Great video, some very valuable points.
Work landscaping or on a farm as a summer job when you're a kid...I hated my parents for making me have "not fun" jobs back then, but thankful now for establishing that base strength for everything else, lol.
I'm not that old, 36, but even when I was in high school, it was so much harder to get good fitness advice. We're lucky these days to have guys like this to educate and inspire.
I'm 38 and there was zero strength knowledge in my small school. There was a decent set of free weights that I took advantage of, but I had to do it on my lunch. By myself.
This is actually a nice refresh for me, been training and not really been seeing the progress that I want, despite the hard effort I've been putting in the gym every time I'm there. Last few days I've realised that I've been asking too much of myself and just absolutely frying my mind and body. Currently on a rest week and looking forward to getting back into it next week with a whole new mindset.
I think progressive overload can include better form since, let's be honest, we do tend to ego lift somewhat, so if you keep the same weight and improve your form, you'll be improving a combination of technique, isolation, rom and time under tension.
Mitch, You are doing a phenomenal job! Thank you for being an inspiration to all who are trying to better themselves. You are hitting a lot of key topics that people trying to get into Strongman need to hear. Keep up the good work!
I L❤VE your vids Mitch! You n Eddie Hall are my favourite strongmen. I started training aged 30 in 2000, and got into strongman after 50. Got a nasty Rotator Cuff injury in 2023, which I manage via Dr. Squat’s advice (guy is awesome). Been Log lifting 18 months now: I’m up to 150lbs and I’m aiming for 200lbs (even with injury). I’m 5’7’ & 200lbs. Can deadlift 400lbs still (my record was 500lbs). My new motto is: BE THE STRONGEST VERSION OF YOU. Freaking love it! (Keep training kids: you’ll appreciate being strong in your 50’s, when your peers are falling apart). Have a great Christmas Mitch. God Bless you and your family. ❤
I genuinely believe Mitch isn't the most genetically gifted strongman ever (not to say he's not genetically gifted compared to most of us but out of the strongman cohort he's not). However I think he's one of the best ever already BECAUSE he has almost certainly trained the best, even his approach in competition is specifically to win via outscoring. Brains and brawn go figure.
I actually understand everything you're saying about acting and myosin and everything and I'm so happy. I recently became an exercise scientist. Lots of work but worth it.
Im 37 old, totaly overweight(140kg/180cm),i finaly got inspired to get my self to gym and i love it,but im also scared. My lifts(legs especially) are going up like rockets. Went 100kg squat to now 3 months in doing 3x5x225kg and leg press from 200kg to 400x9. I fear that my joint will explode someday.I would like to find my real strength level so i could do realistic PO but its hard when i can add 20kg per week, and by doing that i fear ill injure myself soon.

Creatine is one of the most studied supplements. It is good for brain health as well. Most people can't even eat the amount it takes to get 5 grams naturally. Anything over that is flushed out of the system through urine. So taking more will not be beneficial. It is not considered bad for your kidneys if taken at a proper dose. Long story short....it's okay to take every day.
The only people who should avoid creatine are those with kidney issues and those who develop GI issues taking it(bloating, diarrhea). You have to take it every day. 3g is enough, 5g is (optimal) for most
2:13 curiously I thought you were about to mention progressive overload is not about adding stimulus to the session but the need to do this to overload to then progress. The reason this matters is because folks often see temporary plateaus as stagnation rather than assessing loading habits and recovery. Those are good? You're adapting, just looking at the wrong parts. Your bench at X weight for 4x4 is moving faster, and the first rep isn't even challenging on a day with a little much fatigue from work. The fact this isn't X+2.5lbs does not mean you failed to progressively overload. Means what you're doing is, and just have to give time for the body to adapt.
Yeh I'm old man nearly🤔 Still got great cardio strength n muscle...retired from power lifting movements years ago. Stamina, explosive power, athleticism much more important for my specific training
What are your views on asymmetric loads with carries? Obviously, not talking about maximal load carries - but I like the stability benefits of carrying a relatively heavy load on one side and increasing the distance moved before switching sides and moving back over the initial pathway.
2:41 You mention 6 core movement patterns but I have only written down 5 which you mention right afterwards: 1. Squatting 2. Hinging 3. Carry 4. Pushing 5. Pulling What is the 6th one?
