WHY do they still make med students and doctors work such long shifts when it's been proven that sleep-deprived people don't perform well, make many mistakes, and can be downright dangerous? I mean, would you want your airline pilot to be sleep deprived? Or that driver of that semi who is coming towards you at 80 mph? I honestly don't get it.
I will just add to with my own comment I wrote above: Did the same. Ended up being 36+ hours bc AM attending never showed. At 38 hours 2pm a replacement showed. My morning rounds presentation flatlined. I left medicine after graduation day after having worked in it for 17 years. My mental health has never been better and I am finally, finally having a baby that would not have been possible without the hours in residency bc of IVF. Med school was wrecked w miscarriages. Worst life choice ever was med school. By you could not have convinced me otherwise until I graduated only for everyone else, not me, and tried to unalive myself 3x. Do not forget about life. Medicine is hell. And I had therapy and saw a psychiatrist the entire time.
@@TraciL-k8k I really think it depends what your specialty is. I mean, many dermatologists work just 40-hrs per week, take off on all major holidays, never work on the weekends, never gets called in the middle of the night, never has to deal with "cough and cold" patients etc....
@@TraciL-k8k Oh God . Please do takecare of your health. My prayers with you . Its such a tuff job to do. Thanks a lot for sharing so much details. I do understand all you faced. Takcare. Kindly find few holiday leaves and take a gap please.
Love how mindful and demure your hospital is with the messaging overnight. On my shifts the nurses straight up barge into the rooms we are sleeping in. Also the most important thing at this stage is that you were present and you gave your full effort. In the medical field we are often told off by superiors, so your only job is to do the best you can at that moment. Don't be so hard on yourself, you worked hard and things can only get better from now on
@lllll451 by your comment, I can see you have no idea what working 24 shifts in an emergency hospital is and also have zero sense of humor, so better not talk about a lifestyle you have not experienced 🥰 I can assure you I am more than avaliable for my patients and they are the ones who know it and are thankful for it, so that is the only opinion that I really care about
@lllll451 you find a comment about a nurse "barging in" insulting ? Also I would never insult a nurse, hence I have worked as one before I graduated as a doctor and i am more than thankful for all the work they do and all the stress they go through . I'm sorry you take personal offense to my comment.
Congrats on your first 24-hour shift !! 🎉 I’m sorry that the consult presentation didn’t go well, but it’s only a small hiccup ! I’m sure you’ll do amazing next time and when you’re the attending , you’ll look back at this moment and chuckle ! 🥰 Take care of yourself !! ❤️ I’m so excited to see you succeed ! Praying for you !
watching you work so hard and still having a beautiful smile on your face, it inspires me to do my best as well on my university work, so thank you for making this video.
Now I understand why the keep us under pressure of tests for any medical exam because this is what doctor's life is like, you are like a superhuman, i hope i can one day also become a responsible doctor❤
presentation are the worst!!! So proud of you, I couldn't do a 24 hr shift even if i tried. I blank as well all the time, I forget all the patient details and I feel like an idiot. Don't beat yourself up too much, with practice it would become easier.
hi,sab iam saying this after watching the end of the video that you shouldnt be so hard on your self ,and take care of your self and your precious smile that energizes me every single day to study hard and give my best .not alot of people have the positive energy you have so; "LOVE YOUR SELF AND BE PROUD OF YOUR EFFORTS"
I've been in and out of hospitals in my 38 years being alive, having cancer, tumors, hernia repair, appendix removal and more but I tell you this, it's a hospital that is heaven on earth with beautiful angels and boy do they float while shimmering especially after they give you the strong stuff!
this is my biggest dream. thank u sab for posting this cuz it motivated me so much to get going so ONE DAY ILL be having my 24 hour shifttttt!!! pls do more of this but please take care of yourself gurl the amt of coffees youre taking gurl
Don’t be too hard on yourself, you did an amazing job, being so energetic and optimistic despite working for long hours without much sleep, it’s gonna get better soon just wait ❤
I used to work 24h shifts as a nurse. Wish we got a lil bedroom :D Best was a comfy chair in the nurses station. Definitely not viable longterm, but I did it for 8 years and am still alive so you got this girl!
I think its so strange they dont have time limitations, like have a 12 houer max or something, to take life and death desicions after beeing awake 24 + is dangerouse and unhealthy for U who do it! ❤❤❤ Appreciate the work ofcpurse!!!
You motivate me so much and the positive vibe you give just makes this video better. When I am a med student I want to have the courage just like you! Keep working hard.
it's always great to follow your routine at college, etc, even more so now in your third year with lots of new experiences! Don't be so hard on yourself this first time, you'll definitely be much more prepared at the end of this rotation!! Good luck and thank u so much for the greatest contenttt
Hiya Sab! Just wanted to say you're amazing! I'm a resident working in New Zealand 🇳🇿 Your video appeared on my TH-cam feed and I'm so grateful I've found another channel I can subscribe to! Love the style of your videos, please keep them coming! I'm so impressed by how things work in the States...it's very different to how we do things here. A third year equivalent would not be doing any 24 hour calls or ever be expected to hold a pager! You handled your first shift so amazingly! It can be disheartening not to have the great feedback you really actually deserved in the end but know it is totally not reflective of your capabilities/ how you handled that shift or any patient you saw! We all saw the work! Look forward to seeing where your journey in medicine takes you! 😊 God bless!
The medical field has been very hard ever since Covid. The schedule I had was 48 on 24 off. I was a co-pilot with medivac services & decided it was time for me to find something else. During this time I moved back to Hollywood Florida for good & was surprised by mother that she decided to retire, after being in nursing for over 40 years. Having a career you love makes all the difference in life. Be safe & have fun with life.
Wow all this work we are only doing it in our internship year, I think it’s really great that you are getting this exposure at this level it will help a lot to build up your confidence and experience . Good luck
This was so interesting to watch, I'm also on my internal medicine rotation, but at my school we don't get to do 24h shifts, that seems really fun. I love spending time at the hospital.

As a nursing student in Korea, I find it so fascinating (and honestly, a bit envious) that you can wear your scrubs all the way from home to the hospital! If we tried that, we'd definitely get scolded... lol
