    the Ally just struggles at low wattages. that's why with the Ally X they doubled the battery size and increased the "silent mode" tdp from 10w to 13w.

    Honestly, sold my deck and am using the ally on turbo for about 2 hours at a time. I have a clip for the deck that I use on the ally now, and a power bank attached to the back of it. Doesn’t feel that much heavier. Usually, I only have about 2-3 hours of free time throughout my day to game anyways, so it’s a perfect machine for me. Been playing gears 4, control, Diablo 4 using 1080p settings and it’s just too amazing to takes my eyes off of the screen. There’s no way I can go back to the steam deck. And if I can’t get games to run at 1080p, I just put it on 720p and use the RSR option to upscale it to 1080p and it still looks better than my deck. For me, it’s been well worth the upgrade. I enjoy just playing from my bed for the most part.

      So really, it's the much better screen + better image quality experience the Ally gives that makes it worth the $200-300 leap?
      Having seen an OLED Switch myself, I can imagine the Ally's screen being a beauty to game on. It's great that it works for you and that you're comfortable using a power bank and mainting it (aka charging it regularly), but I'm still on the fence as I cannot afford its price and the gains are too substantial, especially when it comes to battery life (without carrying a power bank), but I'll keep an eye out for price drops and updates to the Ally :)

    • @JDabz96

      It's just more optimized for lower watts then the ally could be, I'm surprised the deck was holding its own with the ally at 15w, kinda funny really, makes me positive the steam deck is amazing, and valve customer support is unmatched.

    • @Trucho1996

      Steam decks custom processor is intentionally designed to be very efficient kinda like how apple ipads can do heavy workloada without fans thanks to efficient design. and the SD sweet spot performance seems to be around 10watts from what I've tested with my oled one. At 15w often times you just get a couple extra frames but no major jumps.

  • @joeynexus4525
    @joeynexus4525 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How do you upscale the Ally’ screen to 1080p? I found it working on some games and in others like cyberpunk I’m not sure if it’s working. I can clearly see the difference between 1080 and 720 (rsr) even though many says you can’t at all. That must mean that it doesn’t work properly at those games.

    • @benchmarkbros
      @benchmarkbros  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The proper way to know if upscaling is on is to make sure that the in game resolution is 720p, then you open the Ally's Command Center and the screen should be set to 1080p, besides enabling RSR make sure that you also have RIS enabled (it's what actually makes the quality seem like real 1080p).

      @@benchmarkbros Maybe I am dumb but e.g. in Cyberpunk 2077 don't you just put the resolution to 1080p and then enable FSR?
      I mean if you are just going to play, not for benchmark purposes. I hope my comment makes sense.
      I just got my Ally this weekend, so if I may I'd like to ask another question.
      Is it better to just set frame cap, resolution, etc. inside each game, or would you use armory crate for it? So far I have just adjusted the settings inside the game (e.g. in Baldur's gate 3) and then set the TDP through armory crate. I have to say I was completly caught of guard at how good the game can look on the ally while having a really good fps. I capped my fps at 40 but I am sure you could get even more without making the game uglier.

    • @benchmarkbros
      @benchmarkbros  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheRubsi During my tests I found that setting the resolution to 720p and then enabling RIS provides better image quality and performance than using 1080p with FSR 2. Especially if you're going to be using very aggressive FSR 2 presets like performance which introduces a lot of artifacts.
      I usually set the TDP manually to 15W and use a custom fan curve, I never set a frame cap since it's hard for the Ally to max out the screen. One thing, make sure your screen is set to 120Hz, otherwise, VRR doesn't kick in.

    • @benchmarkbros
      @benchmarkbros  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's as fair as it gets, both devices are rendering at 720p with fsr 2 in-game, and then upscaling to 1080p with either FSR 1 or RSR.

      @@benchmarkbros Version 319 it seems improves the 1% low better than 317. Some games will hit a performance loss with 319 unless you set in the bios the vram to auto instead of 4 Gb. You need to set it to "auto" 319 to see if performance improve. Auto you should get the same average fps as 317 but with a lot higher 1% .. thus it seems Asus is trying to get more balance frame rate without the lows 1%. Some reason the vram set to 4 gb (default) can cause worst performance in 319 than with 317 with some games.
      (someone figured this out knowing on the Deck if you set the Vram from 1Gb to 4Gb RDR 2 ran worst )

      It's pretty much the results I'm getting with every game I'm testing. I'm working on testing Elden Ring and it's pretty much the same situation. Steam Deck and Ally tied at 15w, with the Ally getting an occasional slight lead, but the Steam Deck is working better at 10W and the 25-30W mode of the Ally destroys the Deck (but it uses much more power so it makes sense). The Ally's screen kind of makes up for it, but for my day-to-day gaming I'm still using the Deck just because of the better battery life on AAA games (using 9-10w mode).
