Oh my gosh, I am always modifying my knits. The arm lengths, the sweater lengths, armhole shortened, and lately, I turned a long sleeve cardigan to a 3/4 sleeve and a more snug fit just by washing. So, yes, I've done many things to fix the problem. Including completely ripping it all back to yarn balls. LOVE your ideas.

Good grief, woman! You've got nerves of steel! I was watching most of this video in a state of stunned disbelief. Your ingenuity in making adjustments after a project is completed is seriously impressive. I'm about to make my first post-knitting adjustments. This t-shirt has an a-line shape that is not flattering on me, probably because the fabric doesn't have enough drape or because the model in the pattern photo is willowy and has her hands raised over her head. (I should have realized that the pose was a warning sign.) I'm going to unravel the body and add waist shaping. In addition, I'm going to try to correct a few dropped stitches that occurred right in the middle of the front. 👏🏼 Wish me luck!
I made a pullover that was the best-fitting sweater I’d ever done - top down, fit like a dream! But then I pulled it completely apart to transform it into a vest for my husband (something about the horizontal striping didn’t flatter me so much). All the vest needs are some buttons to be done, but I’ve never gotten any, nor does he express any interest in having it completed. Maybe someday I’ll knit it back into the pullover again!
For bleeding in quilting we use a product called Synthrapol. You will have to rewash the sweater with it, agitating gently. When you least expect it, the rogue color releases. Worth a try. It took red bleeding out of a white background quilt. You and Oscar are quite entertaining!!!!
I think you could try dyeing the sweater a light colour, it might cover the very light colour and make it even and not affect the darker green too much
Now that I have started knitting sweaters I find I am really noticing what I like and don’t like in clothing. I am finding patterns that I love the look of but realistically would not wear. Like you I don’t like round necks on cardi’s but I do like V necks for me. I think clothing purchased feels like it’s relatively inexpensive so a mistake is not a bad deal, but the cost in yarn and time for a hand knitted garment changes the game completely. That is not to say I love all my knitted garments, but I have learned a lot about knitting by making every one of them and also a lot about my own personal style.
Excellent way to frame it! There's something to be learned with every "mistake." I'm also focusing my personal style these days, which is why you see me knitting with the same colors over and over...😂
I would throwa dye over the top, maybe an acid yellow , but i cant guarantee it will work , what a shame Nicole , after all tbat hard work . Ive dkne something very similarto your cardigan , however , i stopped at the point of cutting the jumper , instead, i threw it in the cupboard in disgust and moved on to another project . Love your work x😊
What about overdying it ? A (very) light olive green would cover up the bleeding, without changing too drastically the colors of the stripes or the contrast you have going on. As for the after modifications, I'm currently finishing my last one. The sleeves on my last cardigan where a bit too long. But they where made bottom-up, and already attached to the body. So I finished the cardigan, and cut the bottom of the sleeves before picking up the live stitches and reknitting the ribbing.
There have been quite a few suggestions about overdying and I think I'm going to try that. 😊 Isn't it empowering to know that you can make a change like sleeve length relatively easily? It really does increase one's level of fearlessness 😄

yeahhh, I do that, too! some more, some fewer changes, some get lovely, some dont! Actually I like this kind of challenge. And when it all ends well, then I am so proud of myself! and never expect any one else to understand! they simply can not. but I never used steeking for that purpose. now after your video, maybe I will takle that! Cut and sew is a common technique for machine knitters because there is so much going on at once. Ugh, putting one side of a front on hold while you knit the other if you’re using a punchcard - very complicated. So you knit a rectangle and do a cut and sew neckband to hide the cuts. I have since applied these techniques to handknitting.

Hi Nicole. I knit a jumper in Aran weight (top down). Can’t remembered the pattern !! I hated it so I frogged the sleeves and made it into cap sleeves. Still hated it on me but ….. my friend loves it and wears it often in the colder weather Would love to see how you do the icord on the edge (a wee tutorial perhaps) when you “amend” that cardi. Love the cable feature and it would be a shame to lose it so a type of collar seems a good idea. Thanks for keeping us entertained and on track with our own projects 😂😂. 🙋🏼🏴
I have lengthened a finished sweater but it was a top down so pretty easy to undo the BO and then rip back the ribbing. In saying that tho just yesterday I finished a sweater that turned out to be too tight (despite trying it on many, many times). I ripped back the whole thing and I’m ready to start it all over again today. 😂
you are such a champ!! i’m impressed and a little bit afraid of your tenacity 😅 have you tried using oxyclean? you can presoak your sweater in tub of water and a scoop of oxyclean. you can also just add a little bit of watch to the powder to make a paste. i would test bleach on a swatch both bc of the point you made about precise applications and bc it might make your white yarn into the natural yellow-ish color of cotton.
That's a great suggestion and I think if I were set on keep the white "white" I would try that, but I think I'm going to give overdying a go and see what happens 😊
Love the bravery!! Can't think of anything quite that dramatic that I've done, except pull off and reknit worn out sock toes, sometimes in wildly contrasting colors, because who's going to see them inside my shoes anyway? If the color catcher doesn't work and you do want to try bleach, have you considered one of those fine-tip bleach pens? Might be able to get into the stripy bits.
Nicole, I applaud your modifications. Your sweater s look wonderful on you. I wish designers would give us some variations for different figure types! That. . .could save us some time! Maybe you will design sweaters with modifications yourself!?!

This is a subject I love and hate about handknitting. After spending so much time knitting something it is so disappointing if it doesn't fit well. I have a "Cardigan of Doom" which I covered a couple of my own podcast episodes ago where I did some sweater surgery and I must admit I don't like it still, and would like to start over again with it, but I am sick of it frankly. When buying clothes you can immediately see how it fits and I wish there was a way to do the same with handknitting. I typically knit with fingering weight as well, so it takes a while.
I hear you. You can plan and prepare until you're blue in the face and sometimes it still doesn't work out. I think this is why it's so popular at knitting shows for designers to have sample garments that folks can try on. And also why when people find a pattern that works for them, they knit it over and over 😋
@@Knicoleknits makes perfect sense. I've been feeling that having a "standard" needle size and favourite yarn is also helpful, because then you can look at an entire garment as a swatch
Loving this!! TBH, I rarely see a pattern I 100% love. There is always a little tweak that I want to make. Sometime this works out well, sometimes not.... And sometimes I realise (too late) why the designer made the garment with a particular feature rather than not (Sarah Hutton's raglan pullover from Vogue Knitting comes to mind here. I initially did a scoop neck jumper but shortly added the ribbed polo neck. The jumper was too heavy and the scoop neck quickly became off the shoulder. Oops!) My biggest mod was with Caitlin Hunter's Zweig. I've seen a number of versions on people and it struck me that the lace yoke got pulled down by the weight of the jumper. I didn't want that to happen as I'm small busted so even a small stretching of the lace could be embarrassing, so I monkeyed around with the yoke increases. And made it too tight. So I then cut the yoke from the body, reknit with increases and reattached. Then I didn't like the neckline so redid that. It's still not my favourite jumper and that's because I did a two colour ribbing (another mod) and it's too tight. Too bad about the washing incident. Sorry that happened after so much work. I guess some jumpers are not meant to be.

A few others have mentioned them and I will reinforce the idea: color catchers. I have also heard of people having luck with plain white vinegar in another soak. I think overdying with a green is risky. Also, would you wear a light green sweater?
I have ordered some color catchers. And yes, I do plan to overdye with a shade of green and see what happens 😊If I don't love it, at least I can give away a wearable sweater.
There was a suggest that you over-dye , but wouldn't you lose the stripes? Cotton is hard to work with. I love your podcasts. You are utterly charming, and a good teacher. By the way my husband and I have watched Season 1 of The Killing at your suggestion. Really good. I tried to keep a count of the knitted sweaters but lost track after 10.
I think as long as I overdye in a fairly light color, the stripes will still be fine, just not as striking as they are with the white. I'm glad you're enjoying The Killing! 😊

Hopefully you know what necklines you like on you now so that issue is resolved? I don’t knit many garments as I’ve said. I am definitely NOT fearless. I’m a mouse in my knitting and need my hand held all the way. I wouldn’t know how to modify to that extent plus I’d be terrified I’d ruin all my hard work. Another facing option would be to use a pretty coordinating ribbon to cover the ends.

I knitted a beautiful WestKnits mystery shawl…then my husband machined dried it. Now it can either be wall-art, or a coat for my schnoodle pup.

I did consider the bleach pens, but am worried that it would run over into the green stripes and possibly make matters worse 😋
