Hey, Makers! Thanks for stopping by to check out my first steps in curating my yarn stash. Feel free to mock me for the terrible camera work during the stash tour 😋Let me know if you're in need of a stash re-fresh this year and how you're feeling about that. Don't feel like typing? Pop over to the Community tab and take the poll. Look out Stash - here we come!
I have mostly left over yarns or yarn I have been given. My problem is once I have made the intended garment with a yarn I don’t have the expertise to pick ‘any old yarn’ for a pattern I like. I am hoping to learn.
I love my stash. I've gone through the process of finding all of it, organizing it, etc. Then, I created an Excel inventory sheet with all the label info (when available), and other info that makes it easier for me to identify it. I organized mine into bins according to animal fibers, plant fibers, man made fibers, and ???? And the Excel spreadsheet includes which bin the yarn is stored in. So now when I want to make a project (and frequently I start by finding the yarn I want to work with, and then determining what the project will be), the filters in Excel help me identify and find what I need. Of course, that also means updating the spreadsheet (formulas to determine based on weight how many yards I have left) after completing every project/shopping trip. I've been amazed at what I've been able to do without going to a yarn shop since getting organized. Yes, I'm a bit obsessive/compulsive sometimes.
I love my yarn collection. I have built it up over 11 years from many sources. I have good quality acrylics for children and babies, various wools, cottons and fancier fibers. I have all weights and colours. I make anything that takes my fancy- Knitted food, dolls, toys, doll clothes, sweaters, socks, hats, babies, children... I store according to weight and colour. I have a big closet under the eves of my spare room. I go in there often just t visit y yarn and give it a litte squeeze and dream. I also have knitting magazines and books. I visit them too, and dream. I have 8 grown children and 21 grandchildren. I always have a reason to knit. I enjoy seeing your stash. It's kinda a little voyageristic😂 PS- I have curaed mine from time to time. It's all organized and easily accessed and easy to see
I recently got divorced and moved to a new home that is much smaller than my previous home. I’ve been working on destashing for about two months. I have always been a good cataloger of my yarn/stash in Ravelry so it’s been pretty easy to just move yarn over to the “will sell or trade” tab and put a price on it. However I need to get much more cut throat with what I’m willing to part with because I have a lot left. I currently store most of my yarn in the vacuum bags. I store it based on sweater quantities and in Ravelry I make a notation of where it’s stored in my house. I do have all the single skeins still to sort through. Another great video and I’m excited to tune in to the rest of the series!
I am overwhelmed. I don’t feel guilty, same as you. I have de-stashed several times and then just fill the space back up with more yarn. Will be keen to keep watching! Thank you.
I feel better after reading the comments posted. I am not the only yarn/roving hoarder. Thank you for this Video & anymore videos you are creating on this subject.
I have one glass display cabinet which my Mother left me - cottons, linens, DK and aran. And a glass fronted book case - all my lovely 4ply and lace. These are where all my yarn lives. My scraps I keep, by weight, in large glass pharmacy jars (again from my Mother). The idea is both that I can see what I ha e and that the yarn is protected from dust and moths! I'm interested how you approach the organisation.
I have a five drawer filing cabinet with yarn in 3 of the drawers, fairly well organized. I then have several bins. Scraps are minimal. i do think I need to find a new home for some of my yarn. I did learn that I need to stop buying "mystery boxes!" Yikes, the randomness of it!
It’s school holidays here (I’m a teacher) and I’m working on allocating a project to all of my stash yarn. My goal is to start each project, make some notes and pack it all away in a separate project bag. I don’t have a very large stash and I never buy yarn without a goal in mind so I would say I have 10 sweater quantities of really nice yarn that I want to knit up (and of that, five sweaters all with substantial progress). Last month I sent off all the yarn I didn’t want to use to Hedgehog Fibres in Ireland for use in their Tweedy for a 30% discount when I want to buy something specific. no shade on anyone with a large stash but having yarn with no plan in mine for it sitting in my room really stresses me out. I literally wake up in the middle of the night thinking about what I might do with it so once I’ve used it up, I will only be buying a project or two in advance.
I finally did a de-stash of all my yarn. I decided to donate all my acrylic yarn to a school that has a knitting program. I have only kept my animal fibres and plant fibres. Things are more under control now!
The yarn I'm currently working with fits in three small bins under my bed. My stash is a little bit in the closet and a little bit in the attic. I have an entire room full of fabric and you couldn't pry it from my cold .... hands. I'm hoping to move into a new home next year and have an all purpose craft room with space for everything but most likely I'll still have stuff in storage even after I've moved. The room of my dreams is at least 500 square feet and would mean a custom built home or expanding a ready built home.
So I too could use a deep cleaning of my yarn room, but I just do it in small increments. I've put my acrylic yarn in totes in the basement which I use for blankets and the rest is sort of like yours but not as much! And there is no way I would take everything out at once! For me that is horrifying! But I'll have fun watching you do it!
I'm so happy to see your plan for curating stash! I've been doing the same this month, I have more than a dozen large bins stored in a guest room closet. A few have yarn for projects...next in line WIP's. Quite a bit of it is yarn I inherited from my mother and have actually packed and moved with me several times, can you believe that!? I just haven't been able to use or part with it, but recently I decided to make blankets for my children, sharing the love and stories of her projects and the scraps left behind. One bin has all of the pieces for the last afghan she was working on, I'm ready to finish it, while it warms my lap this month. I'm looking forward to your decisions and organization plan! Good wishes to all of us, as our "collections" may store a lot of emotional memories, regret, inspiration, comfort or sense of self. What a wonderful way to start the new year, uncovering those secrets and seeing our "stash" with fresh eyes. Also, I recommend the book... "A Stash of One's Own: Knitters on Loving, Living with, and Letting Go of yarn" - an anthology by Clara Parkes 🧶🪡🧣🧦🧤
Thanks so much for sharing your yarn story! Sounds like you’ve made an excellent start and have some very worthy stash-busting plans. 😊 And thanks for the book recommendation! Clara Parkes really knows her stuff and will be a fantastic resource 😁
I have to keep all my yarn in space bags due to lack of storage. I dreams of bookshelves with beautifully displayed yarn. 🤩 I would like to document all my yarn on my Ravelry account so I can more easily shop my stash for projects though.
Thanks for mentioning Ravelry - I have *most* of my yarn collection in the Ravelry stash page, but I will need to update it, so that will be a big component of this project 😋
Impressive collection. Here my son has the largest collection of yarn. It could use organizing. I want to work on a project or three and am considering investing in some more yarn. It will be interesting to see your various yarns and how you plan on using them for all those varied projects.
I just did this. Gave 2 bins to a friend. Have switched to clear bins, separated by weight. Trying to get away from acrylic yarns. Prefer wools, wool blends (with acrylic), other natural fibers. I just had so much baby yarn. Odd yarn that I didn't care for.
I had just organized my yarn stash when I learned that my wool store might close in a few months and that it was having a big winter sale. So, I ended up buying two sweater quantities and some more... Fear of missing out really win this round!😅
I’m needing this video! I’m ready to downsize my stash. Particularly the acrylic yarns that have accumulated. The acrylic yarn doesn’t appeal to me. Giving it away does cause me a bit of guilt because it was given to me.
I totally understand that guilt from re-gifting. Let's try to turn that around and feel good about re-homing it to someone who is actually going to use it. Yarn exists to be knit with! 😊
I am aiming to be stashless. I want the joy of shopping for yarn for a new project, and then starting it as soon as it arrives. At the moment I feel like I have to use yarn from my stash and sometimes after it has sat there for a while the joy for the yarn is no longer there. I struggle to destash as I think of the money I spent and it seems like I am throwing money away, even when I donate the yarn.
I couldn’t quite bring myself to be stash-free, but I have managed to part with a good 1/3 or more of what I started with. There are ways to resell yarn, if you’re concerned about the financial aspect. I’m pretty sure I read recently about a website dedicated to reselling craft supplies. If I remember the name of it - I’ll get back to you 😊👍
I just found your channel and I think I really need to follow this series! I have a LOT of yarn and I do love it all (i think??) but I also do feel overwhelmed by it and it has outgrown the area in my house for storage. I have a nice cupboard from Ikea with glass doors (my yarn pantry), but I now have a few big plastic tubs in front of the cupboard and a giant pile of bags, so it's really impractical to open the cupboard and get stuff out, and for the stuff in the tubs and bags it's hard for me to see what's in there. I think at the moment for me to put everything out in one place would just make me feel awful about myself so for the moment, I am on a strict no-buy, knitting only from stash and I will focus on trying to use up yarns that are in the bags and tubs that are stopping me from opening the pantry. when i have made a bit of a dent i might feel a bit more OK about putting everything together and choosing some skeins to pass on to other people.
Insufferably, I organized my yarn last month. But before anyone groans: I am a beginning knitter so my stash wasn't all that large. I ditched the man made fibers and yarn that was gifted to me but was unappealing. Mostly due to being a bad (for me) color. I will be watching with interest to see how you tackle this job. Lots and lots of wonderful yarn in that office of yours!!! I think I will benefit most by learning to edit BEFORE I buy yarn. Good luck!
I’m a spinner, and end of last year I made the decision not to buy anymore (raw) fleeces! I truly have enough (I somehow managed to convince myself of this 🤪). Unspun wool (roving/sliver), is VERY bulky. All my bags and boxes occupy a bedroom. S. A. B. L. E. Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy Oh, and I have acrylic yarns as well… just in case 🤦♀️
I DO FEEL GUILTY about not using yarn that I purchased. But .. I think it’s time to stop hoarding yarn”I just might use some day.” 😢. Wish me luck and good luck to all of you! 👍

We'll be talking more throughout the series about how to know if and how you can use that "any old yarn" in your stash - stay tuned! 😋

Ha ha! My stash is already getting out of control again. I need to give it some love soon!

Just found you, going to do this with my stash!

Thanks for watching! I was overwhelmed too. Feels so good to have it under control 😊
I feel better after reading the comments posted. I am not the only yarn/roving hoarder. Thank you for this Video & anymore videos you are creating on this subject.
Does this mean I can’t give you a bunch of my yarn? 😋😉
I love the Oscar cameos. Last year I culled through my yarn and donated two huge bags. It was freeing! Now I only have what I really love.
I can’t wait to achieve that same feeling! I’ll tell Oscar you said hi 😋
I have one glass display cabinet which my Mother left me - cottons, linens, DK and aran. And a glass fronted book case - all my lovely 4ply and lace. These are where all my yarn lives. I can picture your collection nestled in all those special locations! So creative 😍

Yes! I've been guilty of buying "club" boxes too, and I mostly end up not using the yarn that came with them. Lesson learned!

I love those felt baskets! So sweet!
Me too!!
😂I’m laughing. I am so interested in this yarn cull. I store the yarn for local hospital auxiliary knitting group. Your collection looks so tidy
It’s tidy-ish. Really there’s just too much of it 😋
So I too could use a deep cleaning of my yarn room, but I just do it in small increments. How timely! This book is sitting next to me! I'm working slowly at making my decisions. Cheers!
Isn't it a great book? Good luck making those tough choices!

My yarn collection is stored in vacuum bags by weight to minimize the space it takes up.
I’m so curious about this. What’s the yarn like when you “reconstitute” it? Does the compression affect it at all?
