    I'm a Model 3 reservation holder and finally drove a Model S. OMG EVs are so much more powerful. This whole range anxiety is poppycock. You wouldn't let your car run out of gas. I am just plugging my loaner in at night, like my cellphone. Way more convenient than trip to has station.

    I have a bit of inside information for you Robert, Scandlines had a presentation about it at my school (studying to be a nautical officer in Sweden).
    The charging connection is made by a robotic arm that can compensate for any movement of the ship due to manoeuvring or seas and it makes the connection while the ship is still moving into position for mooring, they only have 5-9 minutes to charge so every second makes a difference, and if I remember correctly it was something like a 10-11kV but can't remember what amps it could pull. I have no memory of shore batteries being mentioned in the presentation I think it's just directly connected to the grid but I may be wrong.
    Here's a link to the project website sailwiththecurrent.com it got a bit of information on it (most of it in English as well) and you got two videos of the connection, one presentation and one of the actual thing being built and installed.
    Also the g at the end of Helsingborg is pronounced like J in Jake

      Also Robert, the English name for Helsingör is Elsinore. Yes, the same Elsinore where Shakespeare's Hamlet lived, at Kronborg Castle.

      No shore batteries, instead a huge dedicated high voltage cable which required digging up streets in Helsingborg this winter to install.

      its not uncommon for large users to have their own substation. My friend works for a wind tunnel and they have their own substation and can use up to 1MW.

    I've been hearing about rechargeable Zinc air batteries for well over 20 years. The problem as always for Zinc has been its propensity to grow dendrites that disrupt the cell structure. NASA used Silver Zinc batteries on the Apollo program. The high energy density was essential because of the vast cost of getting mass into orbit, but the cycle life could be as low as 30 full cycles. The Lunar Rover used rechargable Silver Zinc cells, but there was no means of recharging them (becuase there was no need). Mike Corbin set a land speed record of 165mph in 1974 with a motorcycle powered by Silver Zinc batteries. The record stood for over 30 years. Silver Zinc is still used for space applications, like the Curiosity rover.

      Paul Compton there is a bit of exploration into these again using a coat of graphene on the zinc plates to reduce the dendrites and increase surface area

    To charge that 4MWh ferry with your 7kW charger it'd have take 571h 24m or nearly 24 days, so not quite a year but wow that's still a while!!!

      Alishah Noor you’re referring to the use of cobalt in batteries leading to wars and exploitation of children in the congo? I’d say that the replacement of cobalt with LiFePO4 has taken that out of the equation. Now how about the exploitation of Bangladeshi workers in sweat shops, also in China to bring ultra cheap goods to western countries? Will they thank us too?

      Alishah Noor I realise now (after looking up current battery chemistry) that cobalt was to be removed, but unfortunately Tesla appears have this in new batteries. Their new patent for pouch cells includes NMC, which, as you point out is mined in countries with unconscionable methods like child labour. I’m not sure if removing the minerals would help the lot of the people in those countries. What’s more likely to help is dialogue between all nations to eliminate the practice, rather than destroying their livelihoods by stopping the mining. Unfortunately, the wars get in the way of dialogue.

    Batteries are getting better every other year. The petrol is staying the same. This is the reason, why any investment into the petrol is a very risky one at this stage of development.
    The batteries will take over the market by math and logic alone, apart from being superior in maintenance and operation.

      Looks like you're in Exmouth? How does it do on our local hills? Cycled to Sidmouth and back over on the bank holiday Monday and and was thinking about adding an electric motor as I pushed the bike up that evil 30% hill.

      I got the bafang BPM rear hub 36v . Not tackled peak hill yet but riding from exmouth-yettington-otterton-budleigh and home was a joy. Been to Exeter a few times too.

    These Helsingborg-Helsingor ferries looked quite big to me when sailing in/out of the Oresund on a 27 feet sail boat. Didn't know they went electric, good for them.

      and why not a hydrogen aircraft?? batteries need to be more energy dense than current jet fuel to work... it would be impractical/ near impossible to have a commercial battery airliner...

    Hey, if brake-dust is dangerous, then it meant diesel car is actually more dangerous, because diesel car didn't have regenerative braking.

      regenerative braking does work but you still use the normal brake as well... and brake dust isn't really a concern nor is current diesel emissions...

      @dunhillsupramk3, I think it is dangerous if you consider not just 1 car but thousand of car on the road each minute. The microscopic tiny amount of pollutant a petrol/diesel car produce become a huge toxic pollutant when there're many car doing the same thing! For example, there are study linking Dementia (memory loss) with living near busy road, and there are other study linking driving in a traffic jam with having heart attack. There're scientist in France that found tiny soot in people's brain, and there're scientist in US that found brake-dust can enter our bloodstream thru our lung.

    CalMac Ferries in the Hebrides are doing hybrid ferries where they charge overnight and run off electric motors with a generator recharging the batteries

    I don't know if you accept ideas for episodes from youtube comments, but I got one. You've made several videos about solar panel installations on various houses. Would it be possible to do it for wind turbine, and I don't mean the larger ones that youäve covered, the smaller ones (250W- 1KW). It would be interesting to see how such a wind turbine supports the need for renewable energy in areas/houses/companies that lack suitable conditions for solar panels. Just a thought... Thank you for your videos. It's always nice to hear someone being passionate about renewable energy.

    For those who worry that come 2040, their 2017 Focus diesel will become obsolete. Well, if they still have their 23 year old car at that time, it's not like they have to take it to the scrap yard. The law is that no new petrol/diesel cars can be sold. Those who still own them can continue to use them.

    In the case of the Bolt EVs in question, the cell itself is faulty, so it does require a hardware replacement even if they were to use OTA updates. The Bolt EV does support OTA updates, but GM hasn't elected to use it yet.

    I don't know why people are making such a big thing about the 2040 announcement. It's 23 years away, which by way of comparison I remember talking to a friend of mine (in 1994) about how he'd just been on something called the 'internet', and I was like "yes, I think I read something about that"! So 2040 could be quite a different place.

      Uh, just looks at cars. We are still driving the same cars. Same 4 wheels, same fuels as 20, 30, 40 years ago. 23 years is a VERY short time, considering we DO NOT!!! have a sensible solution for storing energy yet. Considering design and production cycle, we would need to solve this within decade or so. What if we are not able to find a good solution to the problem within the next decade? Are you going to force people into buying cars that have a maximum distance of 200-300km?

      Well the range for the Tesla model S is already around 500km and the charging network is expanding significantly on a weekly basis. The likelihood is that if we get to 2035 and it looks unfeasible, the target will simply be pushed back - but at the moment things look ok.

      So what, everyone just buys Tesla? All the other manufacturers have much lower range vehicles. Not to mention, that those vehicles are extremely expensive if bought without some sort of subsidies or grants. In the UK it is up to 4.5k GBP at the moment. And you know what Reagan said "If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it". So yeah, without subsidies... it wouldn't move. If it was such a good idea, it wouldn't need subsidizing.
      I am not against EV, I can't wait until they become mainstream. But this is not the time. We just don't have the technology for storing energy yet. Those tiny steps and evolution of lithium based cells doesn't really count.

    ForSea operates a sustainable ferry route so how much energy is charged at each opportunity?
    Each trip consumes approximately 1,175 kWh, which is nearly the same amount a residential home consumes in a month. In each port is a tower with a robot arm that connects the charging cable automatically every time the ship comes to the dock. The system charges 10.5 kV, 600Amp and 10.5MW. The batteries have a total capacity of 4,160 kWh, which means that we always have a surplus of electricity if for some reason we cannot load during a stop or if the transit takes more time than usual.

    About the ferries, the smart solution would be to have a bank of chargers by the batteries,and just plug 3 phase 440-1000v cable into the ship.

      Oil is not just fuel for cars you know. It is used for so many other things, that we still need it. And now we can get lithium out of it.

      this would explain why oil companies is the biggest investors in lithium battery tech R&D and why they lobby for BEV's and against hydrogen (also ethanol is now bad after the EPA said it was good, because the oil companies wasn't making money of it, IDIOTS!!).... now in addition to selling fuel to power powerplants to charge your EVs they also going to sell you the waste product to make more batteries....
      while everyone including Elon Musk is all like green energy!! and we need lithium battery cars... all this time you was playing right into the oil company hands.... what a sad, gullible bunch of idiots... smh

    Re: Bolt - Robert, you can rest assured that Europe is still united. At least in the sense that we can't buy a Bolt either... I suspect they don't really want to sell it. I always enjoy your show, please keep up the good work!

      In Continental Europe there is it's twin-brother - Opel Ampera E (not to be confused with Opel Ampera). But not in UK.

      You are right about the name, but you still can't get it. There is a possibility to lease it but only for fleet customers and with serious restrictions mileagewise. All of Germany got, what, 80 Ampere-E's allocated for this year (might have been 100). Trying to sell something is different.

    I have an important question: Is there an adapter in the market, so you could plug a CCS equipped car in a Chademo station?
    If not, is it the problem that it's technically difficult, or do the big backers of both standards prevent it through patents or similar obstacles?

    I expect such a boat connector to work with magnets, perhaps the batteries will be splitted while charging so you can do it with several cables spreaded over the ship instead of one big one.
    This is also why I would advice a swappeble batterysystem in trucktrailers, then you can charge the truckbattery while driving and possibly also have a firm battery in the back of the trailer just behind the 6 wheels. After the swappeble battery charged the truck and trailer battery, you can swap it again so all 3 are full and you can achieve a 1000 mile range.
    Also, you don't need to supercharge, or ultracharge the truck if you want to continue driving as fast as possible, which would destroy the grid.
    With a swappeble battery, you can keep the trucks driving forever, keep the grid stable forever and even the coal powerstations can make far bigger mistakes as ever before without throwing away energy, also, coal powerstations, or solar panels/wind energy doesn't need to be turned off if nobody uses the electricity they create, the batteries in the swapsystem can simply be charged.
