The first movie to really blow my mind was the Charlton Heston one. I was a kid in the 90's. We had all sorts of amazing visual effects by then, I grew up with movies like Jurassic Park, Star Wars, E.T, so on. My grandparents had this on VHS. It was in one of those brick cases with two tapes. I asked my grandmother about and she told me it was a really good movie from the 50's. When your a child, a few decades seems like centuries I remember as a kid being absolutely in awe when I saw this for the first time, wondering how they could have possibly done that in the 'Olden days'

It was an absolute artistic and technical masterpiece, and yet only won a single Oscar for best visual effects.

The most iconic version would be the 1956 The Ten Commandments remake. For me, my favorite version would be the one in The Prince of Egypt as it feels more powerful. The most unique would be the one in Exodus: Gods and Kings as the pathway between the parted waters is much wider than previous versions where they often portray it as a narrow stretch of dry path

Really the one that most impressed me is the on the of 1956 THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, they way it was shot and put together really made me OW, so impressive (quite easy to achieve, more if it's done in miniatures) and quite a realistic final product. The best one.

The shot at 1:35 in the video is not a double exposure, but a split screen matte. If it were a double exposure, then one of the elements would be see through.

That’s the beauty of practical effects. You’ve really got to think of how to get a shot. If done well it’ll always be remembered. When you look and hear about how the Ten Commandments one was done you think wow that’s quite impressive. Then you see the one from Exodus and you think...well not much really. You don’t really get the “money shot” in modern films anymore. One bit that absolutely wows you.

It's funny, that CGI is now so ubiquitous that it is considered "less interesting" than compositing a few reversed shots, while in reality one could produce feature length documentary about the technology that is put in use to achieve this single effect in Ridley Scott's film, and still only scratch a surface.
Or, to put into perspective, shooting water, than combining shots in reverse versus drawing every single droplet of water with meticulous level of detail considering even tiny reflections of the surface, and then animating them individually including fine details like bouncing, merging etc. Stunning work, only it's done by superfast machine, to which telling how to do it took probably hundreds of hours of work. Only the instructions are in C++, which is a geek thing.

CGI is not less interesting in itself, the problem is the end result. Have many friends in the film business and most agree that the problem with most of todays Hollywood films is that they relied too much on the special effects, instead of those effects being there to support a well written, well directed, and well acted film. When you watch a hundred films a year and you can't remember the mayority in any significant detail, theres a problem there! Fully aware that most films are aimed at 12 to 28 males who happily claim that the highlight of their life in any given year, is waiting for the next installment in their favorite franchise. Can I change that to 7 to 47 by the stupidity of most guys at present?

If you read the story of Moses in the Bible, the whole story isn't quite as dramatic as on film. For example, while film versions usually portray Moses and Ramses as brothers and show that Moses didn't know his heritage, the Bible says no such thing. The Bible never once indicates that Moses didn't know he was Hebrew, nor does it speak of his relationship with the Pharoah. When it comes to the Red Sea, it also doesn't seem that spectacular by comparison. First of all, it's correctly called the Sea of Reeds, and it's possible that where they crossed wasn't as deep as the Ten Commandments movie shows. The Bible says that after the fiery cloud pillar separated the Egyptians and the Hebrews, neither party came near each other "all night". "Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The LORD drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and turned the sea into dry land; and the waters were divided." So it seems to me that the water was pushed back to reveal dry land. There wasn't some split down the middle of two walls of water like in The Ten Commandments. So it did probably look more like Moses the Lawgiver, the "quite forgettable" and "less appealing" one, just maybe a bit slower as the waters separated.

I wonder though, how was Stargate effect in the original movie made? I know early CG was available at the time and was certainly used in numerous shots, but it seems like the opening moment was shot by injecting a volume of air into a volume of liquid and then cleaning up the footage digitally. Is this the case, or was it completely digital simulation of liquid?

The animation scene looks more like what Moses would've have done then and it looks more real.

Sorry, Prince of Egypt is no match to 1956 version. 1956 version was involved with a lot of effort to make it look realistic and more believable. Prince of Egypt is just an animation done easily on computers and the act of separation is more cartoonish.

He said it was the best version "since" the '56 version, which implies the '56 version was better. And while I agree the '56 version is more impressive you shouldn't belittle the artistry and effort that goes into producing good animation.

Still, computers in the 1990s were not as fast as these of modern days, so the animators still sacrificed all they had just as much for the drawings as well for the CGI in the making of The Prince of Egypt in the 1990s.
(Heck, just animating one frame at that time in CGI took weeks and even months to complete.)

But then, crossing the Reed Sea, as many scholars now believe the actual ancient texts described, would have been boring as heck, kind of like the Passage du Gois.
